Goku defeats Arqua, a fighter originally from the [[East Galaxy]], in the second round of the Afterlife Tournament, which takes place some time after Goku's death in the battle against [[Cell\|Perfect Cell]].

			Arqua was born and lived his life on a planet in the [[East Galaxy]] some time before the events of the series. He was also a powerful enough martial artist that he was granted his body in the Afterlife. He may have trained with [[East Kaiō]] and by [[Age 767]] was training on [[Dai Kaiō]]'s planet in the hopes of receiving lessons from the master himself.<ref>{{Cite episode\|Series=Z\|Eps=196}}</ref><ref>{{Cite episode\|Series=Z\|Eps=197}}</ref>

			For his second-round fight in the [[Afterlife Tournament]], Arqua enters the ring looking uncertain. [[Son Goku]], not wanting to underestimate his opponent, charges in immediately and kicks him into the atmosphere. He looks sheepish that he may have overdone it, but [[East Kaiō]] yells out for Arqua to use his "technique." Arqua regains his composure and somehow creates a cube of water around the ring. Diving down into it, he has no problem delivering blow after blow to Goku, who is neither able to move as quickly nor breathe underwater. Goku realizes that as long as he is in Arqua's aquarium, his opponent has the advantage. He blinds his opponent with a ''[[Taiyō-ken]]'' and then shoots out of the water, firing a ''[[Kamehameha]]'' back down. It wipes out the water and throws Arqua out of bounds, giving Goku the win.

			Characters introduced in the [[Afterlife Tournament]] largely appear to have names based on some sort of east/southeast Asian food dish, or have a name that is an on-the-nose play on their overall appearance.

			Arqua's name (アークア ''Ākua'') appears to take the Japanese approximation of the word "aqua" (アクア ''akua'') and elongates the first vowel sound. The long vowel mark (called a ''chōonpu'') extending the preceding vowel sound is typically adapted back to English as an "-ar" or "-er" sound, leading us at ''Kanzenshuu'' to decide on "Arqua" for a spelling, keeping the back half of the word otherwise intact from its source spelling.

			Due to the production schedule inherent in producing a weekly anime series based on a weekly comic, the writers of ''[[Dragon Ball Z]]'' interjected anime-only material both as a means of extending the runtime and to flesh out the ''Dragon Ball'' universe. Arqua and the entire [[Afterlife Tournament]] arc was written to depict [[Son Goku]]'s experience in the afterlife prior to the time-skip and the arrival of [[Boo]].
