The series adapts events from the original story in humorous new ways with "chibi" or "super deformed" (the titular "SD") styled characters. The occasional bonus chapter, generally published in [[List of Supplemental Booklets|supplemental booklets]] or guest appearances in other magazines, tells original and "what if?" storylines.<br />

''Dragon Ball SD'' was a launch title for ''[[Saikyō Jump]]'' and the debut official work for [[Naho Ooishi]], and has appeared in each and every issue of the magazine with the exception of a planned break from the January 2017 issue.<br />

The first four issues of the series were released in ''[[Saikyō Jump]]'''s quarterly format and feature specific major events from the original series. Starting in January 2012, the magazine (and therefore ''Dragon Ball SD'' itself) was moved to a monthly format, and the series was rebooted back to the beginning of the original ''Dragon Ball'' storyline. The magazine (and once again therefore ''Dragon Ball SD'' itself) shifted to a bimonthly format beginning with the November 2014 issue.<br />
