Due to the production schedule inherent in producing a weekly anime series based on a weekly comic, the writers of ''[[Dragon Ball Z]]'' interjected anime-only material both as a means of extending the runtime and to flesh out the ''Dragon Ball'' universe. Pizza and the rest of Mister Satan's entourage were developed initially in an episode by [[Sumio Uetake]] and used to provide additional point-of-view characters to comment on the Cell Games, as well as to underscore just how powerful Cell was compared to the greatest "regular" martial artists on Earth.
