Re: A potential 4K release of DBZ...

I've said it before in another thread, but 4K is a waste on DBZ because it's 16mm film, and you aren't getting a noticeable upgrade in visual clarity because of that. I personally do not understand the demand for a whole ass 4K release of Dragon Ball. It already looks fine without the HD, 4K is a bi...

Re: If Toei ever announces they'll do a Blu-ray Dragon box

If DBZ were released as an Aniplex product, well enjoy those Japanese prices on domestic American products. I think an argument could be made that those prices would be worth it for a proper remaster, with the Japanese broadcast audio, & a completely new dub. I wouldn't pay those prices for any...

Re: Why is it that other anime geet pristine home/anniversary releases, yet the Dragon Ball franchise keeps getting ruin

All DVDs are 720x480 and interlaced. When it comes to aspect ratios they're flagged to display at a particular ratio. When a disc is flagged in 4:3, it's basically squezzed slightly to fill that. For 16:9, it's anamorphic and will either be stretched to fill a widescreen TV or have black bars on top...

Sony have a piss poor track record of putting out anime discs that aren't part of their Aniplex division. And if DBZ were released as an Aniplex product, well enjoy those Japanese prices on domestic American products.

Re: Dragon Ball Kai Blur Removal

You ain't getting rid of that blur unless you rescan the film. Kai was blurred to hell and back. Plus that gigapixel nonsense introduces obvious edge enhancement artifacts. Plus the idea of introducing artificial film grain filter to the image is antithetical in "fixing" the image, conside...

Re: If Toei ever announces they'll do a Blu-ray Dragon box

You'd barely get any noticeable quality increase of 16mm film on UHD. Maybe the movies, but not the series. And I don't think Funimation can justify spending money on a 4K restoration of a 300 episode TV series even with Sony money. I’m not saying you’re right or wrong, but what are you basing your...

Re: If Toei ever announces they'll do a Blu-ray Dragon box

Well UHD Blu-Rays are a thing, hopefully whenever Funimation announces they are releasing Dragon Ball Z on it we will get this format's equivalent of the Level sets. Though I'd prefer to see OG Dragon Ball and GT on Blu-Ray before they milk Z yet again, which they unfortunately probably will. You'd...

Re: I've got the Dragon Ball Fever.

Gonna need to suffer finding the Dragon Boxes cause I need the original aspect, though if it stays this entertaining, I'm down going through a eBay hunt. You best have some deep pockets then. Even if you find all of them, you're basically going to pay the amount they cost when they came out in Japa...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

The problem there is that there'd be no English subtitles on a Toei release. If Toei remasters them chances are Funimation will import them...then again, they didn't import their movie Blu-Rays. Granted, they're probably having to wait a few years before licensing those masters, since they ...

Re: Dragon Box Audio Vs. Broadcast Audio — How is there even an argument?

Even shows from the 50s and 60s can have better audio than the crap-tastic optical track audio from Dragon Boxes. It's just a matter of how well materials are stored over time. I also doubt Funimation will ever have permission to release the BA before it's made officially available in Japan by Toei ...

Re: Final Bout and the U.S Broadcast

Yeah, like some mentioned, even as someone who was introduced to Dragon Ball via the heavily edited Ocean Group dub on Toonami, once I started using the internet in 1998 as a wee lad I quickly indulged myself in any and all supplemental Dragon Ball information (as well as a few gaming mags that had ...

Re: Color Correcting the Dragon Box - 3 Part Spectacular

My criticism with the original purpose of the thread is that I don't think it makes the image look "better" by altering the colors in that way--from a viewing perspective. It actually takes it out-of-balance, making it harder on the eyes. Your eyes could adapt to that strain, but it doesn...

Re: Color Correcting the Dragon Box - 3 Part Spectacular

Because the point isn't art analysis or purism/historical preservation; it's for natural perception/ease of viewability. I thought I made that clear. Itty-bitty, trifling details are of no concern to me when watching the footage in real-time, as these frames only occur for a few seconds. Therefore,...

Re: The Mystery of "Dragon Ball Z: The Movie"

Oh man, this is quite a find. I hope you upload more clips (albeit within the forum's rules). It does indeed sound like the dub that aired on RPN9 in the Philippines. Overall, it's not the worst English dub of a DBZ property, but you can tell Trunks has an obvious Filipino (or is it Tagalog? Someone...

Well at the risk of drawing attention to myself, those are my uploads, if the similar names don't give it away. I'm glad you enjoy it, though in hindsight I have mixed feelings in how they sound such as [spoiler]you can still hear some of Funimation's dub voices in the Goku vs. Vegeta example.[/spoi...

Re: What era of DB were you exposed to?

Probably the way most millennials were introduced to it: Toonami. A friend in elementary school told me about the show (sometime in 1998), and it had to be midway through the Namek arc, with the Ocean Group dub. Needless to say I was hooked, and proceeded to plow through the constant re-airings of t...

Re: When did Dragon Ball reach the height of its popularity in America?

I'd say 2002 or so, as by that point most of the show was dubbed, airing on TV with consistently high ratings (even beating out some of Cartoon Network's original programming), and available on home video (albeit in a very fractured form) plus the merchandise was rampant with action figures at Walma...

Re: Hiromi Tsuru, Bulma's voice actor, has passed away.

Undoubtedly a great loss for this franchise. First time I heard Tsuru was on a VHS fansub tape back from the Android arc. She was pitch perfect as Bulma, and I know it's gonna be tough finding someone to fill in her shoes as Bulma, a character that's been tied to Dragon Ball right from the start ove...

Re: What made you switch over to the Japanese version?

Pretty much switched over around the time I picked up some Funimation bi-lingual single DVDs in 2002, mainly because I wanted an accurate script, plus the quality and inconsistency of the various dubbed versions became a chore to keep up with over time, not to mention listen too. I still have a soft...
