Why do people ship characters who have never met, or even showed up in the same arc?

Well, Vegeta has several months of training on Goku at the moment. He should be stronger than Goku, disregarding kaio-ken. If he reminds Goku about the whole "90% chance of death" thing, he should be in the clear.
