Re: DragonballZ Rewatch, Week 420 - Dragonball Evolution (CURRENT WEEK)

[*]Mai refers to Goku as Son Goku, beating Funimation to the punch on that by a good two years. (Though Ocean got to it first, in about 2005, when the first episode of the Blue Water dub of Dragon Ball aired) Surely that should be 2003. In the UK at least I remember watching it during the summer of...

Re: Source of Rumor that FUNi's Early Z Masters "Came From Mexico"

However, this is from Sabat's point of view; I think when they were recording in Canada, they also had the translations done in Canada by people who were good at the job, which is why the pre-season 3 dubs tended to be more faithful than season 3, even though there was still a layer of rewriting go...

Re: Dragon Ball and the UK.

AB never outsourced to Ocean, the Westwood Z and Blue Water dubs were all produced in Canada by Westwood Media. I wasn't saying AB were producing the Westwood dub, I just meant that they were outsourcing an English dub from elsewhere (in this case, Ocean/Westwood) rather than producing/acquiring it...

Re: Dragon Ball and the UK.

I was always under the impression that whoever was behind the Big Green dubs wasn't proud of their work. Everything seemed slapped together. Unwitting and jarring vocal performances, the most basic translations of the French dub scripts, incorrectly naming the Ocean Studios cast in the credits, lik...

Re: DBZ Westwood/Ocean dub UK/YTV/EU [ENGLISH SUBTITLES] collaboration thread.

This is a neat project. I hope to contribute to it at some point when I'm less busy. I actually prefer a lot of line changes in the Westwood dub, minus any censorship to death of course. Some of them just sound more grammatically correct to me. Regarding Ocean dubs ending up on Crunchyroll... I just...

Re: Dragon Ball and the UK.

That email doesn't say anything to indicate AB produced the Big Green dubs, only that they handled Dragon Ball releases in Europe, which generally refers to distribution not production. Any other European countries that had their own dubs produced them independent of AB, but AB still handled distri...

Re: I don’t get why the funimation cast use the same voices not voice actors voices for their characters.

Bulma's *family* is named directly after English terms. Bulma herself is named directly after a Japanese term. Albeit one that is derived from an English term. She is named directly after buruma , without any kind of altering of the syllables. I don't know what else to tell you, man. Bloomer is the...

Re: I don’t get why the funimation cast use the same voices not voice actors voices for their characters.

"Kaioken" and "Kamehameha" are Japanese terms. "Saiyan" and "Bulma" are not. Saiyan is rooted in Japanese. "Saiya" is an anagram of "yasai" which means vegetable. The "jin" portion of the Japanese name (saiya-jin) just means pers...

Re: I don’t get why the funimation cast use the same voices not voice actors voices for their characters.

Funimation didn’t make up the word Saiyan or Bulma. The Funimation pronunciation is not just as accurate or more so, its 100 percent inaccurate. It's just as accurate as anything else, if not more so. Those aren't Japanese terms, and they aren't a part of the original Japanese story or dialogue. Th...

Re: Dragon Ball and the UK.

Theoretically any company can have the rights to produce an English dub of Dragon Ball, independent of Funimation for a particular market if they buy a license from TOEI. The existence of the Bang Zoom Super dub shows that other English dubs can even be produced in the US, as long as they are made ...

Re: Variety - "Crunchyroll Is Adding All Funimation Anime Content, Sony Starts to Phase Out Funimation Brand"

I mean this might be a bit hard for Americans to wrap their heads around, but as far as most of the world is concerned, "Funimation" is mostly just "those guys that made that hilariously awful English Dragonball dub" and MAYBE, and only if they're older than most of Crunchyroll'...

Re: Dragon Ball and the UK.

As a young company Funimation likely had the best of intentions signing contracts to get their dub on TV in Canada but they were also naive to the fact a company they made deals with would not be beholden to their cast or anything else about their own dub (nor should they be as Ocean were a more es...

Re: Dragon Ball and the UK.

[*] Directors for the Z dub were mostly inexperienced and hadn't done prelay (we've known the Westwood dub had multiple directors, but a lot of them being new makes sense because we know it was a low budget production) Eh, I doubt it would have been drastically lower than the other anime shows they...

As far as I can tell, the Outbox is for unread messages and the Sent messages are for ones that have been read.

Not an official design but after seeing this I think I could get behind a John Connor inspired colour palette. Would make for a cool fighting game palette swap at least.

Re: Japanese vs English names

I used to strictly follow the English Funimation names but I feel I've outgrown many of them now, especially after realizing how flawed some of them really are. The Japanese equivalents work in most cases but for an English dub, I feel some of them would require translating or adapting. As much as i...

Re: Why did 4Kids One Piece FAIL while Funimation's Dragon Ball succeeded?

4Kids are often the punching bag of anime communities but back in the late 90s Funimation wasn't any better, the key difference was that 4Kids were adapting shows solely for kids television whereas Funimation mostly abandoned that strategy in favour of the teen/YA home video market. The two weren't ...

Re: Favorite Trunks design?

Easily the Broly/Bojack movie design. I always thought it was the best of both worlds in terms of having the longer hair from the Cell Games yet still keeping his sword. I always associate the longer hair with a more matured version of Trunks and I wish they'd kept it for his future variation. All t...

Re: Burst Limit's appeal

I enjoyed Burst Limit at the time and really hoped for a sequel, as the first taste of a DB game on the 360 & PS3 it really blew me away when I first saw it. Unfortunately, the developers (Dimps) switched their focus to Street Fighter IV afterwards and Dragon Ball fans were left with Spike's Rag...

Re: Favorite Goku Voice?

Kelamis did dub the flashbacks to Namek, which included Goku freaking out before the planet exploded, but I agree there was so much more he could have done with that material. Definitely, though I was thinking more about the first Super Saiyan transformation, as well as the "I am" speech ...
