Re: Dragon Ball's spiritual successor

I don’t know. For Japan at least, it seems like One Piece basically eclipsed Dragon Ball in the cultural zeitgeist a long time ago. That’s why I basically had two (if not three) answers above. One Piece definitely has more people actively following/invested in it now than Dragon Ball. So does Demon...

Re: Dragon Ball's spiritual successor

It doesn’t have one, content-wise. Nothing has quite captured its same magic, and that’s to its credit. Wouldn’t be here if it were so imitable. In the public consciousness? One Piece, and Naruto, and Bleach, and Demon Slayer, and Jujitsu Kaisen, and… At least in terms of being the all-ages action s...

Re: Dragon Ball Super Strength Discussion Thread

Dragonball in it's entirety is about Goku always fighting the next big bad and strongest guy. Vegeta was the current strongest in Saiyan Saga and Goku wanted to fight him again. Freeza was the next current strongest in Namek and he wanted him to go train so he could fight him again. Same with Majin...

Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread

*snip* Five and nine can be read as “go” and “ku” in Japanese (hence the association with the character and May 9 being “Goku Day”), so more than likely it’s just a little Easter egg since something needed to be on the background street sign anyway. Did it need that, though? If it was seconds, why ...

Re: Will we ever see Hit again?

Hit’s such a quaint main antagonist, in retrospect. Little backstory, no animosity toward the main cast, etc.—just a tournament final boss with a memorable gimmick. I like the fact that, in the manga. he’s not even stronger than the heroes in a traditional sense. Probably the single most unassuming ...

Re: Is The Manga Too Long?

The page count hasn’t changed since the Future Trunks arc, which is where it first hit 40+. It’s on the long end for monthly chapters across the industry, but not all that much of an outlier. What has changed a bit is the treatment of single chapters. Through the ToP, there are several that are almo...

Re: Dragon Ball Super Strength Discussion Thread

Re: All posts above: I’m not saying the simplest reading isn’t that Moro is the strongest (although, it’s also been pointed out that that weirdly precludes both Whis and Beerus anyway)—just that, if the series really wanted to establish that, it would have used a different word. For whatever reason,...

Re: Dragon Ball Super Strength Discussion Thread

I'm just going to pipe in here and say non-commitedly that I think it's telling the Japanese chooses to use タフ ( tafu "tough") for Moro, with the word's usual ambiguities (usually referring to durability/tenacity in Japanese, especially in genre fiction). I don't know how Moro/Beerus/Broly...

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Manga Chapter 90 - Official Discussion Thread

I'm genuinely glad people have enjoyed these chapters, since it means they're enjoying the manga in general, but I guess I have to count myself the odd man out. No doubt I'd feel differently if I didn't know where this was going, but even then, I think this all ran a little long. The episodic struct...

Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread

Realistically how long could the retelling take? BoG was 5 chapters with a smaller (?) page count, but it also skipped over a ton of stuff to add teases for the U6 arc inbetween. Superhero is longer and has more scenarios and more dialogue. If it's a BoG style retelling, then maybe 4-6 chapters top...

Re: Why is Toei so obsessed in making Goku dumb in DBS and DBS movies

The meditation line is a little sloppy (but almost certainly from Toriyama, come on), but I also think fans tend to overblow it. The context of the scene is that they’ve come to Beerus’ planet for training, and Vegeta has just been sitting around during that time, while Goku is looking to practice. ...

I... sorta know what you mean, but also not sure I do at all  You mean when he started drawing characters with more detailed musculature? They may be meat monsters but I'm not sure I'd call them gangly, lol. "Gangly" was probably not the right word. "Gristly"? On the same l...

Re: Is Jiren really still a big deal?

Ignoring the meta elements where, yes, the Jiren dialogue probably owes a lot to the movie being written before even the Moro arc was completed, and not wanting to delve into unadapted manga elements, I still think it shakes out okay even coming off of the manga. Even factoring in Broly, Moro, Grano...

The manga could also just adapt SH proper with minor changes to account for different character knowledge, if it indeed goes into the main events of the film.

Re: Cell Max Genetic Makeup?

Didn't Cell Max had visible cables coming out of his damaged arm? That + having to be colored before activation tells me he's 100% artificial. He’s stated to have living cells, which take time to nurture, and you can see bones and meat once his arm comes off. I’d guess those “cables” are just his w...

Re: "Toyotaro Drew It!!" Discussion Thread

I lean toward his Lunch illustration being the best of the lot, and among the better single-character illustrations in DB in general. Wish he’d break out that style more for volume covers, or that DBS had proper title/cover pages for each chapter. He had a brief spell of depicting characters as gang...

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Manga Chapter 89 - Official Discussion Thread

Still cute, fun. Actually laughed out loud at Goten casually picking up the truck, and the timing of that whole sequence after Trunks had been so careful to not reveal his strength. Otherwise though ... I think I have about one month left in me for this story, as the formula of encountering a new an...
