I've seen all episodes and movies for DB, DBZ, DBGT, and DBSS, except for the first three DB movies. I'm planning on watching 神龍の伝説 / The Legend of Shenron / Curse of the Blood Rubies sometime in the next week.

I rewatched this movie yesterday, and it made me think of this. It released on March 2, 1996 which is after Wrath of the Dragon (July 15, 1995).

My theory is that the people cheering on Future Trunks did so with so much conviction they unwitting gave Future Trunks his energy. Remember, according Toriyama, Ki is composed of multiple components: Energy, Courage and Mind. Something that the remaining earthlings and Future Trunks shared immense...

I'm hoping the manga shows us more stuff that happens off screen. That way it's more of a supplement to the show than an adaptation.
