DBZ Bid for Power

Post by GS7X7 » Sun Nov 25, 2012 2:01 pm

I remember Planet Namek used to do updates on this game all the time. It used to be fairly popular and there were demands to have it turned into an official game until Funimation or some other company made "unreasonable demands" about the engine or something.

Does anyone remember this or know the full history of Bid for Power?

Well, all I remember is that I played it and thought it was amazing. Then, it came out that FUNimation/Infogrames had put a "cease and desist" order on it. I was pissed because for some reason I thought they weren't going to make any games (oh, if I only knew). But it was okay once Budokai was released, because even though it ended up being kinda crappy, it was leagues beyond Bid for Power.

I wonder, do people still play this? Well probably not, but did the game's popularity die around after the cease and desist? What engine was this game based off and how did it work? As far as I can tell, keep killing opponents and gaining powerups and becoming stronger?

Also, why didn't Funimation try to license it in some respect? To be honest, I've seen some youtube clips and the first few American-made DBZ games were far below the quality of B4P.

It wasn't actually a proper game. It was a mod for Quake III Arena. I think it eventually became its own game but not until much later.

Yeah, the popularity did die. As a matter of fact, after the cease and desist, it was re-branded into its own game:

But, after a while it went back to DBZ and I think there are recent versions.

I think there was a sequel called Bid for Speed. I know it mixed the original characters with the Dragon Ball ones. The images I've seen have a very... TRON feel to them. I think that would be the best way to describe them.

Nowadays there's also the spiritual successor zeq2lite. Who first started as a mod to bid for power and is now a standalone game.
I've made a thread about it, you can do a search for it if you like.

I heard about this game years ago. As a kid, I really wanted to play it but I never did sadly.

Same here, I finally downloaded it a couple of years ago and was so disappointed. I wish I'd never played it and had just remembered it as being something from my childhood.

Well, why not download and play it now? I'm sure there are at least a few people here at Daiz and some of the other big DBZ boards (Gamefaqs, ?, etc.) that could be rounded up for some matches.

Guys bid for power is something of the past. If you want to be less dissapointed just download zeq2lite for which you don't need quake anymore and away you go having online battles.

I know B4P would be considered technologically-outdated today but back then it was considered pretty hot stuff.

I wonder though.... did Planet Namek mention it in news dozens of times because of how popular it was? Or did it become popular because PN's staff just really loved the game and brought fans to it?
