Dragonball: Absalom (Fan Animated Series)

Post by Big Momma » Sat Dec 01, 2012 3:23 am

I'm not sure if there is a thread for this already, but some of you may have heard about a fan-animated series called Dragonball: Absalom buy the Youtube account "mellavelli". The first episode was finally released:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ll_XPenKkqA

For a fan-project, I think this is surprisingly well done. The animation itself needs some work, but it it's definitely better than most things I've seen on YT.

Another case of a lot of effort but no talent. The only things that barely even come close to being impressive are a few parts in the animation and it's because they're probably traced. 99% of the animation is terrible.

I don't know why people push themselves to make stuff like this. A lot of bad is still bad.

Best part of the project is who they cast as adult Goku.

When I saw who would voice adult Goku I really wanted to watch, I did, but I couldn't make it that far. I got maybe 5 or 7 minutes in before I just closed the window. It looked far too serious to hold my interest and was loaded with OC's and so off-modeling. T_T

I'm sure there is an audience for it though, they may find who they're looking for.
On hiatus.

I kinda forgot I ended up doing a voice for this, haha. But that's probably not 'til the next episode. I was surprised to hear Masako in it, haha.

Still better than a lot of attempts at fan-series, then again most don't get off the ground, so who knows.

Since it's a fan-created work, we should really be using this thread instead of the other one.

Anyway, I can't say I'm terribly fond of this. I appreciate the effort put in, but it doesn't look very interesting.

Having read the other replies (and having sometimes stumbled upon "production videos"of Absalom) I thought that it would be worse. It still wasn't good though. I tried to look at it as I would look as at a professional anime.
Pros:
  • Not so off-model as other posters made me believe
  • Longer than most fan animations
  • Decent voice acting
Cons:
  • The story! It was even worse than most of the AF-stories floating on the net.
  • Tracing - there were some moments where I thought: "oh, it looks ok" and then I realised that I knew the exact same frames from series/movie...
  • Another time skip? Recently the anime world makes me feel like there was nothing more in the stories but time skips (Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, NME). Also DB had enough of those in this part of the storyline (timeskip: Buusaga->end of Z, timeskip: end of Z-> beginning of GT and now timeskip end of GT -> beginning of Absalom? meh.)
  • Off model characters most of the time (still better than I expected)
  • Overreliance on bizarre computer generated effects (that makes Absalom non-Dragon Ball-like to me)
  • And worst of all: OOC characters! Making Pan a 100% housewife? Adult! Trunks and Goten who train of their own accord??? That's precisely why I love Multiverse: even if it had mediocre designs (like Absalom has when it does not contain tracing), its plot would still appeal to me immensely 'cause Salagir knows how to characterise his heroes well!
To sum up, in the polish school notation (1-6 with 1 denoting fail, 2 - pass, 3 - ok, 4 - good!, 5 -very good, 6 -excellent) Absalom gets 2. Good enough for a fan animation but that's all.

I don't think either of those things are OOC. Chi-Chi's every bit as feisty as GT Pan was and she's a housewife. Goten and Trunks have good reason to train - they have to fill their fathers' absences.

Hard to tell. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't awesome.
So basically by watching trailers and sneak peaks - producers copied a lot of animations from other animes (which I really don't like). Sometimes characters looked silly(but who am I to tell, lol). And I'm afraid this will end up like all others AF stories - SSJ 6, SSJ7, SSJ over 9000.
Anyways it looks promising.
I'm sure I'll be subscribing their channel and keep an eye on their work ;)

The drawing style is awful, they are scrawl without good proportions. I told politely that to the creator, that if you want to do a proper animation first you must know drawing an not to do fast drawings without details or logic, but he didn't liked my comment. But I think the animation it's awesome being from a fan.
EDIT: South America? Himalaya? France? This guy even doesn't know what is the dragon world
Why it looks that Uub is a character from Jersey Shore? Cool, Sasuke is their son. Omg, all them wear diamond earings.
Don't want to be rude but this isn't good and it couldn't be more far from what Dragon Ball is.

I actually liked it and thought it was refreshing :P I have to admit I'm probably not going to like where the story is going (Broly, SSJ5 etc.) but I quite liked the character designs especially the Trunks' designs.

The best part of this series is that it actually got made. Even though it's not that good, it's a nice change to see that someone did it lol. Which...technically makes it the best fan animated Dragon Ball series, huh?

Sucks that the best animators on YouTube are too busy making Naruto and Bleach stuff that's gonna get animated anyway...

The art style was rather off-putting for me, but as an aspiring animator myself, figured i'd give it a chance (chances are, my first animations will look akin to this anyhow  ).

Art style aside, it wasn't bad. I enjoyed the serious tone, may not be Dragon Ball, but for a series taking place after GT (which upped the tone compared to DB/Z), it'd be weird NOT to have it be so. It was certainly weird seeing EVERY CHARACTER have ear-rings, and Pan being shoved off to housewife only though. Have to wonder why Gohan has a tail suddenly and Dende(?) looks like a fighter, hopefully some flashbacks take place to help explain things more.

I'll keep an eye on this, but wont be waiting eagerly either.
I enjoy the Dragon Ball original AND Dub, even the VHS Fan-Sub's.

Given that it's the first episode, I think I will give it another chance. I personally don't hate then most people here so far. I do like the serious tone that the show has which is something that I wanted to see in another DB show.

They have a DA page

http://mellavelli.deviantart.com/gallery/29044219

A lot of the art work for this show reminds me a lot of older AF fan fiction and fan art from over 10 years ago.

My main issue with this is the complete lack of buildup for the new enemy, it was just random aliens, a few "I've never felt a Ki like this before"'s and then an action scene. The animation was nice, though apparently partially traced from what I'm hearing.
