Dragon Ball Anime Remake Chapter coverage 8.0 (160 Episodes)

Post by JulieYBM » Wed Feb 05, 2014 1:47 am

This small project has continued to grow and take on new life every few months, much to my bewilderment. When I originally began this project I figured I would mostly stick to framing the 1984 Dragon Ball comic into two chapters an episode, sometimes three. As time has passed this project has been influenced by outside sources and the personal judgment of its organizer many more times than can be recounted. The 2000-2002 Madhouse animated series Hajime no Ippo has played perhaps the greatest hand in shaping this specific draft of the project. In the aforementioned boxing TV series Madhouse managed to adapt Chapters #1-269 of the boxing comic into seventy-five episodes. What astonished me as I viewed the series multiple times was how the story never felt rushed, despite often telling the story of three chapters an episode, episode-after-episode.

Dragon Ball is no stranger to animated episodes that adapt three chapters worth of content. Dragon Ball (1986 TV Series) episode #24 adapted chapters #41-43 of the 1984 comic. Chapter #41 runs for 7:27, Chapter #42 runs for 6:55, and Chapter #43 runs for 5:07. This project seeks to take that to the next level, at least on paper.

Episodes #1-39 (Chapters #1-112)

I certainly appreciate the effort that went into this, it's quite an interesting read! Very well done. After reading each episode plan, it looks like 3 chapters per episode is simply perfect for Dragon Ball - the one place I don't feel it works is for episode #102, where Freeza's return is included in the conclusion of the Namek arc.

I'm a little upset now, because there's next to no chance we'll ever see this happen. It would be great if it did.

edit: Oh, you don't need this space do you? Hope I'm not disrupting anything. :P
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

No, no, I've posted everything for this draft.

Anyway, I included Freeza's return because it makes for a good cliffhanger and frankly I'm not sure there is much point in stretching the Polunga sequences out like that. I do a similar thing early in when I begin the Oolong storyline in the last few minutes of episode #2, after all, so I didn't see much of an issue repeating such with Freeza arriving on Earth.

Wow, I really like the idea :o I think that the anime would have been a lot better if it had been like this.
Are you interested in making this a re-cut version of the series? I once tried doing it, and it was interesting to do, but real life got in the way. However, it would be easier following your guide.

The version I made, which I called "Dragon Ball Fan Kai" (I know, I know  ) which made the whole Saiyan saga even shorter: eleven episodes rather than your thirteen, and it went like this:
1: A really strong warrior. He's Goku's older brother.
Covers Episodes: #1-2
Covers Chapters: #195-197
NOTES: It goes from the beginning to the moment Gohan is kidnapped.

2: That's it! This is the world's strongest combination.
Covers Episodes: #3-4
Covers Chapters: #198-202
NOTES: It goes from Gohan's kidnapping to him breaking the space capsule.

3: Goku dies! There's only one chance.
Covers Episodes: #5-6
Covers Chapters: #203-206
NOTES: It goes from Gohan's attacking Raditz to Piccolo talking to him and Goku starting Snake Way.

4: Gotta survive dinosaurs! Gohan's hard training.
Covers Episodes: #7-18
Covers Chapters: #207-210 (first half)
NOTES: It goes from Gohan being left alone to Goku meeting King Kai.
Just after Chichi faints when she is told what has happened, I include the caption "Six months later" and cut to the Z warriors training on Kami's Lookout.

5: Master gravity! Catch Bubbles.
Covers Episodes: #19-21
Covers Chapters: #210-213 (beginning)
NOTES: It goes from King Kai revealing himself to the Saiyans arriving.
I erased Gregory completely, and even "censored" him in some shots that were impossible to remove without altering the story.

6: Impossible! Saibaimen grow on the ground?
Covers Episodes: #22-25 (beginning)
Covers Chapters: #213-218 (beginning)
NOTES: It goes from the Saiyans arriving to Tenshinhan preparing to fire the Kihoho.

7: Only three hours remain! The super-fast Kinton.
Covers Episodes: #25-27
Covers Chapters: #218-222
NOTES: It goes from Tenshinhan charging the attack to Piccolo sacrificing his life.

8: Dad, you're incredible! A mortal technique called Kaio-ken.
Covers Episodes: #28-29
Covers Chapters: #223-227
NOTES: It goes from Piccolo sacrificing himself to Goku preparing to fight Vegeta with Nappa already dead.

9: An out-of-bounds battle. Goku vs Vegeta!
Covers Episodes: #30-31
Covers Chapters: #227-232
NOTES: It goes from Goku and Vegeta looking for a place to fight to Vegeta transforming.

10: Power level times ten! Vegeta's great transformation.
Covers Episodes: #32-33
Covers Chapters: #233-237 (beginning)
NOTES: It goes from Krillin and Gohan stopping in the air to Krillin preparing to fire the Spirit Bomb.

11: It's a miracle. Son Gohan, the super Saiyan.
Covers Episodes: #34-35
Covers Chapters: #237-241
NOTES: It goes from Gohan fighting Vegeta to him leaving the planet.
The pacing felt a bit rushed sometimes, but I liked how Goku died in episode 3, met King Kai in episode 4 and resurrected in episode 5.

I've toyed around with re-editing Dragon Ball Z footage before, but that is a tedious task when I only have Windows Movie Maker to edit with. I have written this project with the creative freedom of having new animation created from scratch in mind. That being said, fortune will never fall on my lap to make this project a reality, but it is still fun to try out different combinations of story.

I understand, that's why I'm saying that I'd like to help if someone wants to volunteer too. Last time I tried I was using Premiere Pro with good results, and the only thing that made me drop the project was having to manually edit the subtitles after exporting the episode (because I wanted it to have softsubs so I could make them bilingual). If someone can synchronize subtitles to the footage after it's done, I'd be very glad to try this.

I haven't read all of this yet, but what I've read so far seems good. One thing I will say is that fighting scenes on page should translate into shorter on-screen scenes than non-fighting scenes. Dialogue and stuff happens much more slowly than action.

What I'd really like to do one day is re-cut the episodes into experimental movies. They'd be 2.5-3 hours long each (keeping them a consistent-ish length, rather than having some several times longer than others) with the Red Ribbon Army, Cell, and Buu arcs (at least) split into two parts, making 13 movies altogether. The reason I'd try to avoid splitting the Freeza arc is that I want each film to have some sort of beginning-middle-end structure, and the second half would consist of purely the final battle. Fights could be cut down quite a lot by cutting a few seconds here and there, and speeding up certain parts, as well as just removing filler, making action faster-paced overall.

I tried doing that once, but I thought that the 20-25 minute format worked better.

That seems harder, as you have to get each episode well-rounded with appropriate cliffhangers and whatnot, making sure they begin and end in a suitable place, rather than just doing so for each arc. You're more limited in terms of how you space things out. It means that what you create probably lasts longer too, so it's more work overall. I agree that the anime-length-episodes format works better, it's just something I wanted to try that's easier.

Even episodes that mostly cover fighting chapter will have a plentiful amount of room to expand on the action. The episode where Tobi's mask is broken in Naruto Shippuuden covered a chapter in less then five minutes, for example. Kuririn versus Jackie Chun feels mostly like dialogue in the 1986 series wound still packed in forty-four pages of content.

That happened to me the first time I did it, but if I were to redo it (again, I'd like to) using JulieYBM's guide, I think the only issue would be the narrator. There would be times in which the narrator would talk before the eyecatchers and not at the end of the episode, and what I'd do would be using the BGM with no narration.

Wow, this is great, and what I wish Kai turned out to be like. Although, Episode #60 “Kuririn VS Ma Junior” could go with a new name. Maybe "Kuririn and Yamcha's Turn to fight!" or is having Yamcha's fight in the same episode a surprise?

Really? The War Arc's pacing has been getting to me, I'm curious to see if the anime handles it any better.

Like Fizzer, I haven't read all of your work yet, but I have to say that your approach doesn't work too well for the early standalone stories. By stuffing each episode with as much content as you can, you're creating an unfocused experience. Take your episode 2, for example: the encounters with Kame-sennin and Oolong have nothing to do with each other, so throwing both into the same episode will make both seem inconsequential. Additionally, by letting the Oolong encounter bleed into the next episode, you create an odd timeskip only minutes into the episode.

I think most of this trouble stems from the first episode, actually. Since chapter 1 is twice as long as a regular DB chapter, I'd probably just have episode 1 adapt only that chapter. A lot of the extra things the anime throws in really help solidify the setting and the characters, and I feel it would be a mistake to create a literally by-the-book adaptation of this. The only thing that would have to go would be the scene with Pilaf.

Afterwards, you can put chapter 2 with the Kame-sennin encounter, which fits better: Bulma and Goku's disagreements lead directly into Goku taking the turtle to the sea and meeting Kame-sennin. Oolong should still have his own episode; I know it's only two chapters, but again, including anything else would feel tacked on. Then you can dedicate the entire next episode to Yamcha; you should be able to pack three chapters into this, ending on Yamcha being defeated by Bulma's boobs--or maybe even four (including the Yamcha bazooka), but that might cut into the pacing.

The only point that gives me trouble is Mt. Frypan. It would be amazing if the entire thing, Kamehameha and all, could be packed into one awesome episode, but it's unlikely that it would work.

In previous drafts I have used the two-sentence episode titles, but for this draft I felt like mixing things up a bit, so I included some very short and stoic titles like those used for the 1986 TV series.

Naruto Shippuuden tends to cover two or more chapters an episode.

I did this intentionally both to avoid simply re-hashing what the 1986 TV series did and because I believed it would be interesting. This is actually something Hajime no Ippo does in the three TV series, an arc would end with another beginning in the same episode or a joke chapter would end the episode. For this draft I included a specific breakdown of where the story takes place in each episode to make this a little more clear. After all, after a good thirteen or fourteen minutes of Gokuu and Blooma meeting the Kame-sen'nin do we really need to fill up the last six or seven minutes with more of the same? Why not begin the next leg of the story after the commercial break and end it on a cliffhanger to be resolved in the first six-ish minutes of the next episode? "The fearsome Oolong has taken on a scary, strong-looking new form! Can Son Gokuu defeat him?!" is a hilarious note to the end the episode on considering Oolong runs off at the very beginning of the next episode.

This is the eighth draft of this project. I've toyed around with these configurations a half dozen times already. The great thing about this project is that it isn't beholden to the exact footage that is animated by Toei Animation already. The story can be changed and things can be streamlined so that the plot moves ahead. I combined chapters #1-2 into a single episode because it shouldn't take more than fourteen minutes to cover the first chapter, especially when the first few pages of Gokuu fishing could just as easily be a montage with the Opening theme playing over it. A lot of series do that for the first episode these days so that there is more time to include story into the first episode.

Mount Frypan would as two episodes with the clean-up chapter at the beginning of a third. In one draft I did have the entire story in two chapters, but I figured I had more wiggle room this time since I was using more three-chapter episodes. I've actually considered not including chapters #16-17 since those characters don't have anything else to do with the story, but because I had the six Pilaf chapters I figured I would include them in this draft.

Well I like Toei's titles, some hate them because they "spoil" the episode but I only I got into DBZ subtitled after I saw the show already.

As for Shippuden, I saw the first arc and the pacing felt slow so I switched to the manga and never looked back.

The first arc was about one-to-one. Once we hit the 100s the series begins switching between 2-3 chapter episodes and filler arcs so as to avoid trouble.
