How about we wait a bit longer before bashing this release? Perhaps only Bulma will be edited and everything else will be uncut, because showing a 16 year old nude isn't a great idea. Could they even get away with something like that these days?

That's just it though, that alone still leaves it as 'edited' rather than 'unedited' like it was advertised, so even with just this, they've lied technically. And it's just a quick shot of a drawing of a 16 year old girl topless. It's not like we're talking about an actual sex scene with a child or something here, it's not near as offensive as you're making it out to be IMO.

Yep. Censored. No exceptions. The old releases were uncensored except for this, that, and the other too. It sucks, but oh well. A totally uncensored release would make me buy these over the VIZBIGs even with the crappy paper quality, but I'll have to pass since that's not the case. At least I've got the first 9 volumes before they started editing the manga.

Well there's this too.

In the original Japanese manga Bulma shows Pilaf the finger.

Yeah, I've just always had issues with Viz introducing the Z, and I've been hoping for a release that didn't have it. This seems like a pretty poor release though.

About the lying though, surely if they've advertised a product as one thing and sold it as another, there's something that can be done to force them to rectify it? There must now be some obligation for Viz to provide the product that they described, if people are vocal enough about it?

I wonder why that would be edited?

I'm starting to think that perhaps Viz accidentally sent the wrong version to the printers.....

How disappointing that Viz lied to us about this release being uncensored.

Not buying it. Looks like it's time for me to go back to studying Japanese to get the Kanzenban.

Well, so it's censored and in black & white.. ugh.

Thank you for making it public and I won't be buying it. I hate false advertisement!

You'd really go through the trouble of learning Japanese just so you could see Bulma's breasts?

It's more than just that, he gets to read the original intended version instead of a censored version. Props to him.

Also in learning Japanese that's a huge advantage for real life and media (anime, games, films, music, etc).

Well, since you asked, one of the FTC's primary purposes is to deal with fraudulent advertising. Albeit, many people would need to complain to create attention and there's no misleading "better health" issues here to create a big hoopla over. Plus, it would probably be more beneficial to take this straight to VIZ. If enough people complain, it could lead to them taking off their claim of it being "uncut and uncensored," which would be a minor yet fulfilling victory for the fandom's goal of: please companies, just get it right.

Viz confirmed it was a mistake in printing. They were MEANT to be uncensored and will be fixed in the reprint.

@VIZMedia The unedited and uncensored Dragon Ball 3-in-1, why is it CENSORED and same inconsistent translation? Unworthy of Kanzenban covers

VIZ Media ‏@VIZMedia 55m

@KyuubiMinato Sorry about that. We removed the censorship on most panels, but there are 3 pages that slipped by. We'll fix it on reprint

I'm hoping they do fix it. I still canceled my preorder. There's no color pages.

So, is there anybody willing to search for other pages that contained censorship in past releases that are now uncensored? Ostensibly, there should only be three pages that "slipped by". But that doesn't sound quite right to me.

EDIT: I checked it out. I just searched for edits to the original artwork, and I've found four from the VIZBig's that contained censorship. Chapter 8 (VIZBig pg. 143-144) Bulma's shower. Chapter 15 (VIZBig pg. 235), Roshi's pafu-pafu. Chapter 19 (VIZBig pg. 286) Bulma's middle finger.

I'm pretty sure there are more, but I didn't really want to dig too much deeper. I doubt it was only three pages that slipped by.

That's really interesting. Instead of apologizing for the 'misunderstanding' and clarifying that the releases won't in fact be uncensored...or not responding at all, they actually stick to what they said before and promise to release the uncensored version in a re-print.

If they don't 'fix it' next time and they lied again then they could really be in some doodoo. It'll be interesting to see where this goes. As crappy as the paper quality might be, a completely un-freakin' censored release of the manga will have me buying these over even the VIZBIGs. The Kanzenban art, more faithful numbering scheme, and lower price will help to make up for the deficiencies in paper quality only if they are totally uncut too. Otherwise I'll just enjoy the VIZBIGs and do without middle fingers or comic-book boobies.

I'm still somewhat skeptical though. Why release Dragon Ball uncensored in their 3-in-1's if Naruto and One Piece aren't being left unedited in theirs? I get why they don't want to publicly advertise the 'uncut' aspect of a re-release because they don't want to incidentally inform everybody that all their previous releases were censored...but this still sounds funny to me. Even if they are stealthily releasing uncensored Dragon Ball 3-in-1's (without advertising too much), then why not do the same thing for their other two most popular series from the same exact product line?

I don't know. Their censorship (not that I'm defending it) has always been pretty minimal. They basically edit middle fingers and nudity. Sure, there's plenty of Bulma shenanigans in Dragon Ball and nudity isn't exactly rare--but they really only edited scenes with more full-exposure like with the shower edit. Goku's little pee wee is never edited and other nudity scenes involve stuff that doesn't really need to be edited--like Bulma flashing Roshi the other way and you only see her butt. Or when it's just a panty shot, or whatever. It really could just be a few pages that they 'missed'.

I prefer Dragon Ball without a nude under-aged girl.

Really? It's like this is the first time you've let us know.

Here's hoping we really get an uncensored version. I'm not sure how these things "slip by" though.

I'm glad they've at least acknowledged the problem. Hopefully the reprint and subsequent volumes won't have this problem... Gotta love DBZ, the drama continues...
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.
