I wouldn't be surprised. For all the things that are wrong with the Speedy dub, it does have one legitimately great thing going for it: the audio quality of the music and SFX. The ME (Music+Effects) tapes they received are extremely crisp and clear, more so than the vast majority of other dubs (including the German dub, which didn't get around to dubbing DBZ until the early 2000's). Only a small handful of other dubs received ME tapes of that quality, and to the best of my knowledge, they were dubs that began airing relatively shortly after the show's original run in Japan, suggesting that Toei just didn't hang on to that many high-quality ME tapes.

Yeah, that, and also how the names used for the movies are consistent with what Toei uses on their website. I mean, it does say it's licenced by Toei Animation Enterprises... Meaning they probably were the ones translating and dubbing the "Speedy dub", which is why Toei had an English script to give to companies like Funimation. I always found that strange. It couldn't be normal to translate a show like that, and I never believed they did it upon request of FUNi.
I wish one of the companies would talk about it. I've asked all companies involved with that dub, and noöne ever replied.

Wow. I hope not. That sounds like a mess. Especially if we were to get it released. We'd need subtitles to watch an English dub. Haha

Movie 9 was certainly dubbed in the late 90s, if the music replacements are any indication: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jF2P2m_p86Y

I don't even know what to say about that. That's at a level I can't comprehend. I REALLY want to know more about the "Speedy dub" now.

Agreed...from a production standpoint, this dub sounds like it has quite a story behind it.

It seems the Speedy dub was produced in the same studio as Ultraman Ace :

That video was blocked in the United States for some reason. Here's another one for people having trouble.
Well, it does sound like the same accent. The acting and voices are a bit better, tho. Still not GOOD of course. And the names are actually correct, it seems. Is there any info on THAT dub? That might give us a better idea about the DB side of things. I'll try looking around myself.

The only info I could get about the Ultraman Ace dub is that it was released by Speedy Video and it was recorded in the 90s (Speedy Video started in 1996).

So now I have some new info to share about this dub, I've been talking to a guy who grew up watching the Creative Products Corp dub and asked him some questions about it.
This is what he told me:

The dub of DBZ stopped right at the episode when Piccolo protected Gohan from Nappa's attack, this is when they stopped dubbing DBZ for a while and started to dub the original Dragon Ball.
They did NOT dub all of Dragon Ball, they only dubbed up to the King Piccolo arc and stopped.
They eventually continued their dub of DBZ but only up to after they had gotten to Namek (he didn't specify where exactly on Namek the dub stopped).
Both "Greatest Rivals" and the Broly movies (which were simply called "Dragon Ball Z: The Movie) got VHS releases but the Broly movies also got a VCD release.
The Broly movies were not done by Creative Products or at the very least, didn't use the same actors from their dub.
The "Taglish" dub of Dragon Ball was a thing but not during Creative Products run, the Tagalog dub's first few episodes were actually done in Taglish then eventually the dub became entirely Tagalog, while it uses some of the same actors from the Creative Products dub, it is from a different company.

The guy had also owned Greatest Rivals on VHS but lost it and told me that the VHS cover used this artwork which I'm sure gives us all a better idea of what to look for as we search ebay and other sites for this VHS tape

That's about all the info I have for now, hopefully more people can confirm these statements to indeed be true and we'll get closer to finding this dub.

BUMP!

Not too sure but I think I may have the treasure you guys have been looking for. 8) PROOF? Click below!

Creative Products Corp. dubbed the "Greatest Rivals" movie (Revenge of Cooler + Return of Cooler) while Solar Home Entertainment dubbed the "Dragonball Z: The Movie" (Broly's Second Coming + Bio-Broly) as seen in the pictures above. As for the details, I can't help you on that

I haven't watched these tapes since the 2000s so I don't know if it's still as good of a quality as I remember them to be when I was a kid. I don't have any access to a VHS player right now nor be able to digitize them.

Hope the pictures somehow helped on the discussion."

EDIT: I apologize for the crappy image quality. Hands were shaking and too lazy to take new and better pictures
