Justin Chatwin mentions DB fansite response

Post by SparkyPantsMcGee » Wed Feb 24, 2010 4:57 pm

So I was in Best Buy the other day with a gift card that had left over funds on it while looking for fun things to get I stumbled upon DBE for about $14. I figured then was the best time to pick up the movie instead of spending my own money on the movie. Anyway, as I always do after the movie is over, I decided to check out the special features. One of the features "Fox Movie Channel presents: Life After Film School with Justin Chatwin" indirectly brought up Daizex.

I don't remember the direct quote(and is someone can provided a video link that would be cool) but he mentioned something along the lines of his friend stumbling upon a MAJOR DRAGONBALL FAN SITE that were unimpressed with the movie(putting it lightly). They didn't say Daizex directly, but being a member of this site, I couldn't help but put two and two together. Thoughts?

Also, VegettoEX you mentioned upcoming interviews with people in your podcast, Did you ever try to get interviews with people that worked on DBE? Watching all the special features it felt like the people working on the movie were CONVINCED they were doing justice to Dragonball. Now that the movie has gone and past, I wounder what their(the actors I mean) opinions of the movie are now that they aren't marketing it anymore.
...Wait what are you doing? Are you still reading this? I finished what I had to say, why don't you move on to the next post?

I'm pretty sure just about everybody was unimpressed with the movie, it could've been any Dragon ball fansite.

We got maybe two minutes into that special feature when we first got the Blu-ray. It was too laughable to continue. I wish I tuned in for that...!

"MAJOR" website could be anything to anyone. This site is "major" in certain ways to certain people based on certain factors, but it's completely unknown to the vast majority of the FUNimation-raised, English-speaking fandom -- it's certainly not "major" to them when it's not even on their radar.

Fuck, I'd say the opinions broadcast via our podcast were probably some of the most generous out there... and that's quite a generous statement in and of itself. Furthermore, we never really gave any flat-out "review" of the movie on anything other than the podcast, so it's doubtful that they "read" anything here on our site.

And yeah. Find me a DBZ site ("major" or not) that gave it a glowing review, and I'll eat my shorts.

Again.

OK, I won't really.

Good point, I guess it could be anyone. I still thought it was funny that they brought the subject up. they also mention the hair as being a major issue with the fandom. The interview itself was boring but those two tidbits caught my interest.

I can't imagine the hair having been an issue for any halfway sensible fan.

I thought Mike and the crew were way too generous with their opinions on that movie. I saw much harsher opinions everywhere else.

Like the video review on ThatGuyWithTheGlasses.com, guest starring MasakoX (among others).

It would amuse me so much if it were Daizex that had been implied. X3

Chatku's hair and eyes not being black were the least of my worries; I was upset about the fact that they scrapped Goku's real personality/backstory and completely made up their own out of bits and pieces from various superhero backstories. Their Goku was so OOC he it was like one of those "in name only" cases. :p

Also, Chatwin's acting is way too wooden. He's got trouble emoting, which just makes it worse when you're supposed to be portraying Goku who's usually an excitable guy. @_@

I'm still waiting to hear news on if they've scrapped all plans for a sequel. I'm hoping FOX Movies views DBE as having done so poorly money-wise that we won't have to see what they would do to Vegeta.
On hiatus.

I'd like to see a revamp or a proper sequel done by someone that knows what he's doing. I don't like FOX when it comes to handling games/comics/anime to movie films they always seem to do a really bad job with things. I'd like to see Sony or WB pick of the rights and do the series justice. Thought I will say this, the movie wasn't as bad as I thought, it could have been worse...it could have been the Street Fighter movie.

I prefer to refer to Chatwin's Goku as "Noku".

Hang on... Goku In Name Only.

Yep, from now on I'll refer to DBE's protagonist as Gino.

I have the exact opposite opinion. Street Fighter to me was just "NO!" DBE was the best comedy of 2009.

Also am I the only one that checked out the special features? Watching the making of the Chi-Chi vs Chi-Chi scene(or the chichichichi scene as my girlfriend would call it) everyone really seems to think that was THE HIGH POINT of the movie. I believe the director said something along the lines of "If we don't get this scene right we'd end up loosing the audience." I thought that was hilarious, if you ask me you lost the audience when you referred to Ozaru as Piccolo's henchmen.

Now excuse me I'm going to practice martial arts with the bonus training video that came with the movie.

Oh I'd be up for that. If done properly, with respect for the source material and with a better director/writer/set of actors, a live action DB could be done well.
I heard they fired the guy who wrote DBE's script, but I want Wong gone too. And Chatwin. Aaugh, Chatwin you and your painfully unconvincing acting. >_<

Son Goku's my favorite Dragon Ball character, and because of that I'm especially picky on what I think a realistic live-action version of him would be like, which is why I was so upset/disappointed in Chatku more so than any other adapted character. Like Yamcha's DBE counterpart was just as awful as Chatku, but he didn't annoy me nearly as much.
When the initial news that they were going to make a live action movie broke and before they announced any actors/actresses, I was really hoping for Goku to be played by--and I'm going to get vaguely fangirlish here--a hot, well-built guy with plenty of martial arts background and theatrical background and messy bed-head hair. (Because I know Goku's actual hair makes no sense not only in 3D, but 2D as well. A bed-head look would be a nice subtle nod and I think it would've been cute on my theoretical non-existent live action Goku. Shorter version of teen Goten's hair?) That's only half of it though, the other half would be that the writer and director keep Goku's personality in character. Even if he looked fantastic, it still wouldn't count unless he was also written like the cheerful, childish, battle-loving, food-devouring naive woodland martial artist Goku is.

Instead I got Chatku and his stunt double instead. :p Much disappointment was had.

I really wish James Marsters would just come out and say what the status of FOX's live action DB project is. I just want a "yes" or "no" to the "Will there be a sequel or reboot?" and I think he's the only one who's in a position to deliver that information.

Not to be confused with the Americanization of a that other fictional Japanese icon that has the exact same nickname.

Also, I'd be hard pressed if he didn't mean this site or maybe even Kanzentai.

I thought he was refering to dbthemovie.com, which was managed by JAPPO which during the production was visited by tons of fans who left around 100 comments per news post about the movie.

Anyway, I'm glad the fanbase got through to him. Though I do think he's almost too scared to do a sequel now. XD But if Fox wants to make a sequel, he has to cooperate because he signed on for it even before Evolution was released.
