Perhaps they've finally noticed the audio issue in GT
A rerun of DBZ on BS Fuji is ending in the next month, then GT starts after that. Also, Tokyo MX, a local TV channel, has been broadcasting the same rerun weeks earlier than BS Fuji, and they have already started airing GT today (May 8 in Japan). Since my brother lives in an area where you can watch Tokyo MX, I requested him to record the show, and he told me what he saw a little while ago. They are using the remastered Dragon Box footage, but surprisingly, it seems that they synced it with the original clear-sounding audio. I thought they would just use the DBox source as-is, but they bothered to sync it up with a superior audio source. BS Fuji is likely to use the same masters, so it means that I'm going to be able to record the entire GT with the stereo audio. Anyway, possibly my brother can be wrong, so wait for the detailed info until my confirmation in June!

Very interested in seeing how this turns out. Even if it's just a fan getting a hold of the broadcast audio having it archived somewhere would make quite a few of us relieved. Hopefully Toei already has their hands on a copy of these masters and won't ditch 'em.

That's cool to hear and I'm wondering more so that in Europe, the Japanese TV version curently runs on Animax and all 64 episodes are in mono. As it is old series, nobody bothered with dub, but alongside the new anime it sounds like hell, making the GT seem more older than it is. I'm also more accustomed to the stereo in GT from my DVD player.
In past, the French and Polish versions ran with stereo audio, so I don't get it.

Oh how I wish they'd do the same to Z.

I can confirm everything that was said in this thread. Tokyo MX did indeed air GT with high fidelity audio. Also, NEPs come before the ED.

This is great, if FUNimation could get this new audio for Dragon Box GT Dragon Ball GT, i.e, if someday they produce it it'd surely be better than the Japanese version, due to the audio at least.

FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray

I'd like to know where the audio source came from, I thought the audio masters were thrown out?..
Re: Perhaps they've finally noticed the audio issue in GT
Not for GT. GT reruns have always had high quality audio... Toei just didn't bother to use it because they figured nobody would care about audio.

Wait, so it's airing with original audio, and Dragon Box footage?!
I didn't think Toei was that resourceful! Which is sad, because with any other animation company I would absolutely expect them to use their best footage.
Yeah, so if you have a DVR in Japan, you can have something greater than the Dragon Box.
Maybe Toei will hide away those dinky old mono film audio copies, and every future release will use the good audio from the tapes. Wait, Toei isn't that resourceful...

On a random note, the opening uses the old D2 video instead of the Dragon Box video. Main episode, preview and ending all use the Dragon Box video though.

Re: Perhaps they've finally noticed the audio issue in GT
That's exactly the same as Nintendo's online streaming on Wii except for audio quality, which might mean that Toei themselves still provide the masters with the muffled audio to others, but Animax or Fuji bothered to sync their old good-sounding masters with what newly given by Toei. Few years ago, I heard that Animax had switched GT's footage to the DBox source in order to edit flashing scenes, so possibly Animax is the one who did it. But in that case, it means that Toei still isn't aware of their bad audio masters and maybe not going to use the original audio on future releases though.Puto wrote:On a random note, the opening uses the old D2 video instead of the Dragon Box video. More random trivia: The Tokyo MX airing has a custom sponsor card. The audio plays the guitar solo from Dan-Dan with a generic sponsor message over it.

That's kind of weird. I guess whoever edited the master decided to throw one in there for the heck of it.

Is that sponsor card just that single image of Goku?
If so, I prefer the other GT sponsor card from the original broadcast.

So mondo lame.

Yes, just that static shot. Digital freeze-frame.

Re: Perhaps they've finally noticed the audio issue in GT
I have to admit that the audio feels very odd to my ears.
In a very good way, I might add. I'm so used to the crappy mono mix from the Dragon Boxes.

Apparently episode 5 on Tokyo MX is mono (though still much better quality than the Dragon Box). Wasn't 5 where they originally switched to stereo?
Also, starting with episode 5, the opening switched to Dragon Box video (as opposed to the old D2 masters' video).

Oh, really? That's pretty bad news. Indeed, they originally switched to stereo from episode 5.Puto wrote:Apparently episode 5 on Tokyo MX is mono (though still much better quality than the Dragon Box). Wasn't 5 where they originally switched to stereo?
