Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.
I require Hole-in-the-chest Yamcha, armless Tenshinhan, decapitated Guldo, Namek Gohan with neck snapping action, cut-in-half Freeza and Buu, Final Flashed-Cell, that guy Buu killed by forcing himself down his throat in full expansion, and hole-in-the-chest Goku and Raditz with Full Nelson action, please.

I hope they make a 2-in-1 box with:
"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime. It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super

The possibilities are endless!
OH! OH! I've got another one!
Unconscious Burter and Vegeta 2-in-1 pack, with neck stomping action!

I still haven’t lived down going, “Who the heck is Tao Pai-pai?” that one time I was talking with Ei’ichiro Oda-kun. But the fact that there are still people reading the series after all this time… All I can say is; “thank you.” Really, that’s all.

And that you also have IMMENSELY skewed and comically backwards priorities in what you think is most important and needed to make a good Dragon Ball story.

The whole "dead Yamcha" thing. I've seen it on Japanese t-shirts, I've seen countless homages/parodies, and now we've got this figure. This moment seems to be very popular among the Japanese fanbase.
My question is, what kind of popularity? Is it remembered for being a dramatic, sad, iconic moment in a beloved series? Or is it just a silly "LOL Yamcha" meme thing?
Is there anybody who found that moment sad? Cause I laughed.

So, I hope that two weeks old doesn't count as necro-posting, cuz uh, I remembered the discussion about other similar figures that could be made (though apparently I was only a part of it on Skype, not here, huh), and...well...

If it's the latter, then man. Poor guy.
The latter. IIRC, the dead Yamcha meme originates in an anime magazine and has been around for 20 years or so. Actually, a lot of DB fans there are already tired of the meme and getting disenchanted with an official licensee acknowledging it. It also doesn't help that it happened this late.
On Japanese video comments viewers will often write ヤムチャされた, lit. "He's been Yamcha'd". So yeah, Yamcha's pitiful moments against the small bads of the series are definitely played for laughs among Japanese fans.
As far as the US fandom goes, it's a bit weird. I dunno how much can be attributed to TeamFourStar - cuz as I've said in other threads before, I don't think you can put anything fans have done with their material on them really, cuz that's blaming material for existing, which is just kinda silly - but there does seem to be a subtle shift over the years. Even before TFS was a thing, it used to be Kuririn that fans would shit on constantly. Nowadays, you might get a few jokes at his expense, but it's pretty much all on Yamcha now. So in another ten years, what, is it gonna be Tenshinhan's turn? Chaozu's?
For me personally, I don't mind a good joke at a character's expense. They're fine. Some (IE many) definitely take it way too far though, and that's definitely not cool.
