Dragonball Parodies...amusing, or blasphemy?

Post by Mewzard » Wed Jun 11, 2008 5:59 pm

I had long wondered, but rarely posted on, the matter of parodies of Dragonball in other mangas. Like, for instance, in the first volume of Crayon Shin Chan, where Shin is smacked by his mother, and, right after a dramatic moment, he pulls out a Freeza mask, asking if that was all the power she could manage. While I find such parodies funny, I find myself curious on other fans opinions. Also, anyone else notice other parodies?

Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo (probably up there with Dragonball as one of my favorite manga) also has parodies of it frequently, especially with this character:
http://s18.photobucket.com/albums/b122/ ... nga873.png

and his parody of Dragonball's extremely powerful attacks really made me bust a gut laughing:
http://s18.photobucket.com/albums/b122/ ... nga877.png

I don't read enough manga to point out many examples, but Dragonball seems to be that big pop culture thing to parody, like SNL and The Lewinski scandal back in the 90s. Just how many different manga do you think use Dragonball as part of a joke? *first topic posted, be gentle*

It depends on how its done. If the parody is meant to be funny, it would be okay in my book. But if it's something that is just there to outright bash the series for no good reason, then it's trash to me.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Yeah, Raki's right about that. I've made a Dragon Ball Z parody in South Park style and I put it up on YouTube. I made fun of Dragon Ball Z as a fan, not to bash it.

A South Park style Dragonball parody? That does sound rather funny. I do agree, when its all in good fun, I enjoy a solid moment of humor. Like:

Yeah, as the show gets older, there may be less, but I imagine the spirit will more than warrant more parodies in the future. I guess I enjoy parodies of Dragonball in the same way celebrity roasts go. You do/enjoy it because you love them, even if you give them a bit of a pop with the mock towel.

Off Topic: Yeah, there's a link to it in my signature, the first link.

On Topic: Well, anyway I love the parodies done by Bo-Bo-Bo-Bo-Bo-Bo-Bo, Shin-Chan, Gintama, Neko Majin Z etc.

Also, it depends on what kinda humor is used while making parodies too.
In my opinion as long as there's a decent amount of references and scene parodies, awesome jokes, it's awesome in my book.

But, if it's a parody like "Dragon Ball's Gay Just Because" and there's no back-up claims, those kinds of parodies piss me off.

oh, then you should love this parody...I was shocked when I first saw it at how close to the original scene it was.

http://s33.photobucket.com/albums/d92/D ... ZEEEE2.png

When it went Shinsetsu, it became less random humor, more parody. But yeah, Neko Majin Z, Bobobo, Shin-Chan, all the good comedies make some good parodies of Dragonball.

Best Trunks arriving parody I've seen so far, you're right it is close to the original.

I wonder why only 3 people have posted here?

Good question, its surprising. You'd figure more people would like such humor. There are a lot more if you keep an eye out...but at the rate its getting released in America, I, who am just short of my 20th birthday, will be 49 before it gets finished. Its tricky to find the right images and video parodies at times though.

Yeah, I enjoy reading/watching parodies to the Dragonball series.

This one is one of my personal favorites:

http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/237699

It's a cross-over with ducktales, and Vegeta is trying to take McScrooge's lucky dime.

Even if you aren't particularily a Disney fan, I'd give it a try. It is incredibly well animated(Well, except some parts on purpose) and it is very funny.

o.o Nooooo I can't access that last one > < Argh! Bad laptop, bad!

I love all this crazy parody stuff- I don't know a lot of Japanese ones but actually American ones come to mind. Both Billy and Mandy and Fairly Odd Parents featured what were obviously parodies of the 23rd budokai, and they always make me grin ^___^

Vegeta... trying to take Scrooge's lucky dime?
*throws laptop a senzu* You may need this...
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D (I... guess that's enough smileys...)

Ahem. As Toriyama likes parodying himself... Egh, I guess it just depends. (I.E, I wouldn't care if Robot Chicken or Family Guy referenced it. Oh wait...).
Meh. *tries Blathering Blatherskites*

"As a matter of fact, it isn't." ~ Scroodge on that being ok.
"Make my monster grow!" ~ Ms. Roberts on "If at first you don't succeed"
"Fusion ha!" ~ Duey and Loui on being fricken awesome.

This day just keeps getting better, doesn't it? DBZ abridged, McDuck Vs Vegeta... now all we need is a DBGT: Revised update. Or caffeine.

Ur, I guess that answers the question sorta.

Well here are some of the parodies I have done, I might as well post them since this is the parodies thread:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvC1zeTKYHM
Dragon Ball GT Awesome Series Episode 1 - It's my DBGT Abridged pretty much, this is a very short episode though. There's a lot of Gay jokes in this one aimed at Baby. I'm still making these.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcIHQXErQxw&fmt=18
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHeOTsJV5vg&fmt=18
Awesome Wow! Super Anime Team! Dragon Ball Z Parody: Goku vs. Freeza - It's my South Park styled fan series, this is the first special and really is just for fun, this has nothing to do with the actual series, that's why I called it a special/parody. The second link is if you'd rather hear it with bleeps in there.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2InuP-_ceEI&fmt=18
Random DBGT Comedy Fandub - I got bored and it has Vegeta sounding a little like Drummond and Goku sounding like his Growly SSJ4 voice that Schemmel uses.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDZfB6E9pAg&fmt=18
Death Note & Dragon Ball GT Dub [Career Project Dubs] - I did this for a school project. I'm not even kidding, it's a comedy fandub, but only to the point I could do for a school project. It's part of a Career Project that my school's 8th does, I chose Voice Actor as my Career. This was my Visual Aid, this video the "Visual Aid" part I got a 10/10 on it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbGKBRLLc-g&fmt=18
Dragon Ball GT Partial Fandub: Goku insulting Pan's Weight - Well, since FUNi handled the scene kinda lame, I re-did Goku's voice. So, Pan's reaction is more natural.

That's all I have up on YouTube having to do with DBZ/GT.

What do you guys think of them? I understand if some or all of these suck.

Dragonball Z parodies......I tend to like them.

Here are some more questionable ones if you haven't seen them already:

VG Cats: http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=148

And the classic Buttlord GT (explicit language and maybe scenes....I dunno, haven't read it in awhile): http://www.atomictoy.org/comics/buttlor ... ordgt.html

As far as the professionaly made manga parodies (Bobobo-Bo Bo-Bobo, ect), I feel that they are a nice tribute to Toryama's work, especially since they are done by other maga artists that can truely respect the effort he put into his series.

Dragonball parodies are completely frikkin' awesome without question if they're done really really well. However, I'm not going to name any names as to where one of the best DBZ parodies out there.

I love Dragon Ball parodies. Especially things like Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, where they just incorporate DB into the plot for a quick non sequitur. Yeah. I love that.

Interestingly enough, Funimation got in on it on one Shin Chan ep with a kid going, "Kamehamehame-Bastard!"
