Speed Feat Thread

Post by Saiyatonian » Mon Aug 19, 2013 8:42 am

This thread specializes in estimating or speculating how fast DB/Z/GT characters are. Obviously when using ki.

Are the characters light speed? Supersonic? Massively hypersonic? Massively FTL?
Is it possible to watch DBZ with epilepsy?

It's unlikely that these characters are light speed, but there are feats that would like to state otherwise. Problem is, DBZ is rather notorious for abusing cinematic time. The best speed feat we've seen as far as I'm concerned was that of Super Gotenks where he flew around the Earth a lot in seconds, and even that still wasn't light speed based on how many times he flew around Earth in that scan. A DBZ character's speed is hard to grasp with all the inconsistencies within their speed. I'm kinda on the side of relativistic speed for DBZ characters.

Depends on what area we are talking about. Battle speed is a lot faster than Travel speed. Late Z if we were to take SSJ Gotenks travel speed then considering he circled the world at least 5 times. A nap is usually considered about 20 mins. SSJ Gotenks had 1 minute left so he circled the world about 5 times in just under 9 mins.

40,075,016.6856 metres is the length of the equator. SSJ Gotenks was circling the planet in the higher atmosphere so this maths will be not very generous to SSJ Gotenks actual speed.

5 x 40,075,016.6856 = 200,375,083.428 metres.

Over 9 mins he would clock a speed of:

371,065 m/s

or

mach 1,091

The speed of light is:

Mach 881,743

Thus SSJ Gotenks is just over 807 times slower than the speed of light.

If speed is increased proportionally with each transformation then Gotenks should be 8 times faster in SSJ3. Probably not though, all we know is ki increases proportionately. But if it did increase his speed proportionately then he would be a little over 100 times slower than the speed of light.

SSJ3 Gotenks(Hypothetical + Pre-RoSaT): 2,968,520 m/s

or

Mach 8,730

Chouzenshuu 4: Using his staff, it takes Whis about 26 minutes to get from Beers' palace to Kaio's, and 3 minutes from Kaio's to Earth.

I find this one to be a problem because I believe it doesn't take that much speed to outrun the explosion, especially considering battle speed vs. travel speed. Typically, with solid explosives, the explosive velocity doesn't even exceed 10,300 m/s and that is really the maximum for explosive velocities. I think Goku moves faster than that crossing Snakeway? Maybe the explosive velocity is differen't for ki explosives and that is why it was impressive? But Goku definitely didn't need to go at the speed of light to escape that explosion. What is more impressive is his reaction time to respond to the the explosion at the point its created to avoid any damage. Such reaction time would involve him responding at thousandths of a second most probably.

I don't think Goku dodged the Taiyoken. He merely made a run for Roshi's glasses before the Taiyoken went off.

Alright then. I guess if you wanted to measure his speed like the way Death Battle did it could go like:

Using the feat in Dragon Ball when he dodges AK-47 bullets (This is equated to combat speed) then adding the oozaru transformation multiplier when he drinks the sacred water, we'd get this for multipliers.

715m/s x10 is 7150m/s
then adding Death Battle's gravity formula (I find to be correct)
x586, we get 4189900 m/s not bad, and keep in mind this is Goku at around Saiyan saga/early Namek saga.
then adding the SSJ multipliers.

4189900x50 = 209495000 m/s about 209495 kilometers, nearing the speed of light. Logically this would make sense seeing how all the events on Namek supposedly happened in 5 minutes.

209495000x2 = 418990000 or 418990 km/s about above the speed of light by a hundred kilometers

SSJ3 would be 418990000 m/s x 4 which would be 1675960000 m/s or 1675960 which is about 5x the speed of light.

And if we add SSJ4 (not really counting this since GT is non canon) then Goku would be minimally 50x the speed of light, but GT is stupid so I won't count that.

So yeah, it's kind of just speculation, but really, no one takes calcs seriously in the first place :P

Speed doesn't scale linearly. If it did, these characters would be MFTL. Also, GT isn't necessarily non canon. Canon is highly subjective when it comes to Dragon Ball.

Goku dodging lasers.

Goku catching a Dragon Ball.

Vegeta's Final Flash leaving the solar system (anime).

Cell reacting to said attack. By far the most impressive reflex feat in all of DB if it really did leave the solar system soon after like the anime shows.

Piccolo's blast hitting the moon in one second / panel.

Roshi's Kamehameha doing the same.

Goku outrunning a Solar Flare. Stated to be light in the Daizenshuu.

Raditz dodging one of Piccolo's attacks point blank.

Krillin and Roshi having that whole fight in 0.7 seconds.

Goku's Kamehameha hitting the sun in seconds (GT, Movie 10, Movie 5)

Freeza's blast hitting another planet in the solar system in seconds (anime) with Goku reacting fast enough to see and block the attack.

Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

How did he react? All he did was go "AW SHI-" and get hit.

I don't have a problem with them going FTL. Science and physics get suspended in DB when it's convenient. See moon blowing up, King Kai's planet not being a gas giant, etc.

Faster than the human eye by far. Speed of light? Speed of sound?

Off Topic: I think the clips/panels are slowed down versions of the fight so we can see what really happening rather than staring at the mountains all episode

I thought he tried to avoid it at the last second, and that's why he only last half his body?

Either way, even being able to see it move is already something.

You're correct, he did try and dodge it at the last second. If he took the full brunt of the attack the Cell arc would have ended right there and then.

I don't think it would have killed Cell, we would have just had another warp Kamehameha moment.

Hmm, I'm not that inclined to agree with that. The Final Flash had a much larger radius. If Cell had taken the full brunt of it then his whole body would have been taken away. Goku didn't manage to kill Cell because the point blank war Kamehameha only managed to hit his top half. The Final Flash would have undoubtedly hit every inch of Cell if he hadn't of moved at the last second.

Gohan-absorbed Boo is a slow ass. Super Gotenks flew across the earth multiple times in even faster time than what he did.
