Tao Pai Pai's age

Post by Adamant » Thu Jan 22, 2004 7:57 am

Seriously, the guy's gotta be old.

Tsuru Sennin, his brother, was around when Mutaito defeated Piccolo. That was 300 years ago.

Yet he still looks like he's about thirty.

Hey, that's cool. I never really thought about it, but Kame Sennin and Tsuru Sennin aren't the only old people around...

Kame-Sennin=Master Roshi, the Turtle Hermit
Tsuru-Sennin=the Crane Hermit, also known as the Master who taught Tenshinhan and Chouzu how to fight. He shows up in Dragonball at the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai and gets a Kamehameha from Roshi in the face for his troubles. See just cos your from the UK doesn't mean you can't know things

Taopaipai was born in 459. Since he gets killed in 750 that makes him 291 if my math works out. What's with Kame-Senin and Tsuru-Senin's families!? Out of the four, only Kame-senin is granted immortality so why were the other three so damn old?!

How do you know Tao Pai Pai isn't immortal? As far as I remember, Roshi said in the DB he had a Phoenix that could grant immortality. It's not inconcievable that he also used it.

Said Phoenix died of food poisoning, though... I doubt anyone could've gotten immortality from it. ;)

True, but that wasn't until just awhile before Goku showed up, and he was around a lot longer than that. Wasn't that also how Roshi became immortal?

Surely if Roshi's immortal then doesn't that mean he can't die? But he died fighting Piccolo Daimao, and I'm sure when he knocks out Tenshinhan before he fights Roshi says something like: "There is no immortality potion". Just to add a bit more drama to the fight maybe. But someone will have to confirm that for me.

Roshi is immortal, in the sence that he can't die from natural causes. He can continue living forever as long as nobody kills him, or when he uses a technique that takes his life. It's not the same immortality as Garlic Jrs.

Fair enough, but I'm sure I remember that line about the immortality potion from the manga. I don't have mine with me, but maybe someone who's got the Piccolo Daimao fight can clear that up.

He does indeed say that the immortality potion was a lie before going to fight Piccolo. To me it sounded true, and not just a pre-fight drama line.

I've always figured he's immortal because of his hermit status. In English, we think of a hermit as just a recluse, but in Japanese, a sennin tends to be a magical old man who acquired special powers through effort and training. That could also explain why Tsurusennin and Karin-sama are immortal, since they're both hermits/sennin, too.

But that still doesn't explain why Taopaipai is so old...

Here's the quote from the danish manga:

Kame Sennin: He can't cause me any harm... I've drunk of the water that grants eternal life!
Tenshinhan: No way! I can't just watch! I want to fight!
*Kame Sennin knocks out Ten with some spray*
Tenshinhan: Ugh!
Tenshinhan: Wha'... What?...
Kame Sennin: This troubles me... ... but it's for your own sake!
Kame Sennin: You see, I'm not immortal... ... and if something happens to Son Goku, you're the world's last hope...! But you shall train first... and train a lot... before you can defeat Piccolo!

But the danish manga is known for having generally crappy translations.

He just said that because he knew he'd die.

As for the phoenix, note that his older sister is at least 180 years older than him...

Yes but Uranai Baba must have some kind of special powers relating to her life. I mean, what other humans can travel to Hell and back and not die?
