Re: Overall Would You Say The Dragonball Fandom Is Positive Or Negative Compared To Other Fandoms?
One of the worst things about DB fans is how people pretend to be watching something better than others. Calling other anime series as worse or DB ripoffs.
They threat DB as best anime and best thing in existence, saying that DB teached them a lot and it's a good show for kids to make them grow up as good people (yet call DB a "cartoon for little kids" and they will eat you).
What did DB teach you? That being smart and loving father will make everyone hate you? And that being brainless but strong and beating others is the only way to be respected? Of course i enjoy DB the way it is, but saying that this show has value for young people is just ridiculous.
And what's worse, the same fans tend to hate people who watch MLP saying it's brainwashing (DB isn't) cartoon for kids (DB is for adults!).
It's a hypocrisy because watching show about little ponies, despite having more depth and value, makes you lame or gay in their eyes. (Like being gay was something bad ).
Apparently, just because something has blood, violence and fights makes it a better, more mature show and doesn't make you a grown up watching cartoons for kids at all.
Take a random cartoon, even the Teletubbies, and add vulgar words or nudity. It will magically turn into show for adult people and you wouldn't need to be ashamed of watching it Seriously, if DB lacked nudity and most of violence it would just be another "stupid cartoon for little kids" even with the same characters and story.

Wasn't aware we were allowed to use the term "narutards" to refer to the naruto fanbase on this forum.Jackalope89 wrote:It really depends. There are a bunch of good fans, for sure.
Then there's ones that give Narutards a run for their money.

Funny that 8000 saiyan brings up Sonic, I think Dragon Ball on many levels has the exact same issues as the Sonic fandom, but for different reasons. The core issue with both of these is that they're perceived as completely different in terms of tone and direction depending on who you ask, because different interpretations and iterations are so radically different from one another while still being iconic to those people that it fails to have any consistency in the image of what it's "supposed" to be, and what people end up fighting to the death on their incomplete pictures of what that image is. For Sonic, it's due to staff, development hell, and other issues making each game of the early-mid 2000's a radical shift in art, tone and quality (compounded by various tv shows and comics being their own brands) and for Dragon Ball it's the localisation of the exact same material completely altering it's perception in people's minds, branding anything unlike it (no matter how much better it is, or how "original" the form of it is) as "wrong" and "not true to the series". It makes people build camps in different ideas and segregate and generalize those who aren't into the series for the same reason as them. For example, with Sonic you have fans of the original comic continuity, fans of the 2013 reboot, fans of the IDW series, fans of the obscure and poorly-documented manga, fans of the UK Fleetway comics, and these are just for one type of promotional material for the series (that just happens to be better written than any of the games ever were). With Dragon Ball there's staunch manga purists, arguments over different portions of the story, arguments over the way the anime adapted each, arguments over various dubs of that anime, arguments over different versions of those dubs...it's a mess.
This is why every single thread about Forces is "WELL MODERN FANS WILL EAT ANYTH-" and "CLASSIC FANS ARE JUST BLINDED BY NOST-", and every Super discussion has some angry user parading the "WELL SUPER MANGA FANS ARE ALL-" or "WELL THE ANIME'S A BIGGER CASH GR-" rhetoric like it actually means anything. In short it's the source of huge consistency problems (regardless of the quality of each deviation from the norm) dividing fanbases because everyone has a different idea of what defines the nature of the series.

It's no worse than the fandoms of most other mainstream franchises.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

Brainwashing my ass, Friendship is Magic may not be DB but still it's a good cartoon. I really like the stories, their messages about friendship and the characters (one of my favourites is the hard working Applejack). I can't deny I had my prejudices about the show too, finding it too childish and girly but once I watched it, I became interested to it. However, I don't consider myself a brony or part of the fandom because I never interacted with any other fan of the show. Let's say I'm just another viewer of the show.sunsetshimmer wrote: And what's worse, the same fans tend to hate people who watch MLP saying it's brainwashing (DB isn't) cartoon for kids (DB is for adults!).

Regarding the OP's question, the DB fandom may be bad because of the trolls, ignorants and the guys who think DB is the perfect anime and every other anime is bullshit, but it is not the worst fandom ever. That place could go for the Steven Universe and The Loud House fandoms.
The first fandom accused a fan artist of fat shaming because she drew the fat characters with a thin body and the fans almost caused her to kill herself, and the second fandom falsely accused an fan artist of rape and now his life is ruined.

The DB fandom is pretty alright as far as big mainstream fandoms go. It's so diverse that you can't really point to one aspect of the fandom and say that's it. For example, if I were to judge the DB fandom based entirely on this website, it would only be a microcosm. And I wouldn't have anything really bad to say about it apart from "maybe a little elitist and pedantic." And that pretty much describes most fandoms, and DB is nowhere near as bad as, say, Star Wars.
Re: Overall Would You Say The Dragonball Fandom Is Positive Or Negative Compared To Other Fandoms?
All fandoms are pretty bad for whatever reason.
I'm not incredibly involved but I would say the DB fandom of today isn't that bad. Some people come off as condescending but I don't think it's that bad.
I used to post on the old planetnamek.com forums back in the early days of the Funi dub. And THAT was pretty "toxic" as the kids like to say. Every discussion devolved into some of the ugliest flame wars I ever saw online. Usually between the "dubbies" and "subbies" but people also argued about power levels and crap.

I haven't read anything about people committing suicide or bullied online for making porn, so I'm going to say positive. It's a low bar, but people these days go straight to 11 over the smallest stuff.

Well, I thought we saw the worst of the Dragon Ball fandom during the Goku/Superman battle and debate from 2012 and 2015. And considering how some of the fandom acted during that time compared to how I see many other fandoms act on regular basis, we are nowhere near the most toxic... at least in the general sense of fandom of worldwide media. If we're specifically talking about anime/manga fandom, then yeah, the Dragon Ball fandom is up there with some of the worst.

How are you guys quantifying this? Considering how different other fandoms are (e.g., the size of the fandom), how do you compare apples to apples?

You think Naruto fans are bad? You should have seen the drama that DB fans created on a piracy website, though the thread was deleted since. It lasted about 400-500 of insanely demented comments.Jackalope89 wrote:It really depends. There are a bunch of good fans, for sure.

Console fanboys and Sonic fanboys can be bad but nowhere near as what I've witnessed from the DB community.
Re: Overall Would You Say The Dragonball Fandom Is Positive Or Negative Compared To Other Fandoms?
I haven't had the chance to encounter a fandom that wasn't completely irrational and full of whiners. This one is just like the others, it's not as bad as everyone here is making it out to be.

The Pokemon fandom is much, much worse. Between the 30 year old original fans, the younger fans, and everyone inbetween fighting over whatever they think the best and worst Pokemon gen is.

Sadly I have to report some of my French Dragon Ball community citizen, few days ago they went out of bound by vent their hatred toward Toyotaro and some of their comments were racism. And misogyny I think I saw some comment about Gine, Towa or Android 21 that will make you facepalm.Saikyo no Senshi wrote:It hasn't reached Star Wars levels of bad with blatant racism and misogyny, but it is definitely not welcoming to all people. So, yeah I'd say its bad.
I think the Dragon Ball Fandom overall is on par with Star Wars and Sonic The Hedgehog which I saw so many similarities.

It is nowhere bad as the Steven Universe and Five Night at Freddy's Fandoms but it is up there for being the worst.

Compared to the various console/PC gaming fans who are constantly at each others throats the DB fandom isn't that bad. Other examples are comic book fans arguing over stuff like who's the best Spiderman, which movie adaptation was the best etc..
