Dragon Ball TV Series Box 1 Dissection!

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Wed May 06, 2009 1:50 pm

Well this is totally out of left field. Why do I have the Hong Kong version of the first 24 episodes of DragonBall? I don't know but, I'am sure it made sense when I bought it.

Lets Dissect! ::Takes out knife::

First off, many people think this is a bootleg release. It's not. I bought this from PlayAsia.com a while ago, I think it had something to do with that I was so frustrated about not having the first 13 episodes of DragonBall uncut which were my favorite episodes out of the whole series on DVD. Sure, I could get the Australian release but PlayAsia.com has my credit card info down and I can just click and buy stuff with ease. That can be a double ended sword.

So the box itself is pretty nice, it might be a little bland but, I think it works. It has that new Goku art on the cover, along with the classic logo on the side panel.

Image

I really thought this set was going to have a fold out book thing going on like the FUNimation season sets. Instead the 3 DVD's are in it's own DVD case.

Image

Funny thing about the images on the DVD cases, I don't think they are really consistant. For example. The first one has that new Goku art, the second is production art made to look like a screen cap, and the third IS a screen cap. Now, don't get me wrong I don't think anything is wrong with having screen caps for DVD covers (if it's done right) but to have one DVD have that new art and no background and then the other two have full color images that fill the cover? I don't know it looks off to me.

Image

I think they look good separate, not really as a set.

The images on the cover will show up three ways. The first is the cover art itself, The second is the disc art and the third is the background image inside the case.

Image

I also noticed that most of the information on these DVD's were in English. I thought that was odd. I know English is used all over the world and is taught from a young age to kids in other countries, but, I don't know... Just struck me as weird. Why wouldn't it be in Cantonese?

Image

So, I put the DVD in and I get more English. It's the Copy write warning. In English...

Image

The main menu is pretty cool. It's the eye catcher...

Image

After Oolong throws all the balls on top the umbrella, DragonBall logo comes in from the left and stops at the right. Then some other selections pop into play. I have no idea what any of them say though. I can't click the middle two. It just re-plays the menu animation, does anyone know what it says?

Image

Episode selection screen...

Image

So after skimming through some episodes I noticed it's censored. I really wasn't expecting that. I noticed they cut any scenes where Goku's penis was shown and they also cut the "your balls are missing" joke. There is never any real on screen censorship it's always just cut right out. Eh, I guess it's not a big loss but... ::Shrugs::

As for the picture quality itself. Eh, it's ok. It's watch able, lol. It reminds me more of FUNimation's colors then the DragonBox if anything.

So yea, that's about it. :D

That new Goku artwork is adorable. X3

The copyright warning being in English is a bit odd.
On hiatus.

I've been meaning to get these sets for a while, I was kinda undecided about it before, but the picture looks very nice, It has Japanese audio, correct?

FUNimation needs to release Dragon Ball so badly. I hate having all of Z, and all of GT, but not my favorite of the three.

This release looks pretty good. I don't think I'd ever be interested in a set with a dub other than English or Japanese. But the quality looks fine.

Still want a remastered Dragon Ball though.

Well if it's December, 2010, and they haven't even announced remastered Dragon Ball box sets, get the Madman sets.

They have a few issues, but they're good at least.

Sure doesn't look like it.

It's not really new, it's on several others.

Well I don't mean it's new like exclusive to this release, I meant it's new as in it was made recently. Sometime in the past 5 years perhaps?

Also, why is the DRAGON red while the BALL is blue?

Oh well, it's China...

Which I don't have, mind you. ;)

In any case, if it's available elsewhere, I'll take that too; I just like the art. XD

These have English subs, right?
Also, really? Censorship?
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Well if you have to censor footage cutting it out completely is definitely the best route to go in my opinion. Digital paint never sits right with me.
