Cool episode guys. If I had a PSP, I'd definitely pick up the game. I enjoyed the movie, and all that behind the scenes stuff sounds interesting. I wouldn't trust any other review source for Dragon Ball games, especially an Evolution game. I'm not claiming that they're all bias and you're not. It's just that with this stuff, you guys know a little more about where I'm coming from and what I want to see in these games. Being Dragon Ball fans, you know what kind of cool stuff we get with these games (costumes, opening themes, fan service) and appreciate them. Whereas a typical reviewer would probably just talk about the gameplay and story (as they should).
FistOfTheSun wrote:Personally if you're primarily a dub watcher, I can't see how you can fall into the "Hardcore Fan" category. Simply because what you're watching isn't how the anime was intended to be viewed.
I enjoy the dub and I consider myself hardcore. I watch the original version, I have +1,000 posts on a forum that focuses on the original version, I spend a lot of time making fan videos, and I have a bunch of DVDs, games, and other DB paraphernalia. So, do I not fit into the "Hardcore Fan" category?

Eh, it doesn't matter. That's just a title. And like they were saying in the podcast, it's being taken out of context and blown out of proportion.

"Hardcore" as a label in itself I don't really mind. It doesn't really annoy me when people themselves hardcore fans and others not hardcore. What does annoy me is when you can tell it has the connotation of "true fan" (which FistOfTheSun's posts did a bit), or someone just uses the term "true fan" straight out.

And it's because the kind of people that use that term tend to think they have more of a right to have an opinion on something than others. For example, a while ago, I across a protest forum against DBE, and pretty much all them were very into the "true fan" label. "If you liked you the movie, you're not a true DB fan" was basically the site's motto.

Wasn't the "fighting" in the cutscenes the same way in the Shin Budokai games? Also the Camera feature was also in both Shin Budokai games.

"90% of you here don't even know what you're talking about (there are a few that do). But the things you say about these releases are nonsense and just plain dumb. Like you Metalwario64"--final_flash

As mentioned in the episode, I've don't own and haven't played Another Road and only briefly the first one, so that stuff might have been in there. Aaaaaaand it seems it was :).

Also because Viz's English-language release of the manga is, despite a few small annoyances here and there, nowhere NEAR as flawed as FUNimation's English-language version of the anime.

As a result, it's not going to cause the kind of "splitting" of the manga's fandom the way the anime does. There's very little, if anything at all, in the English manga to cause such controversy over.

EDIT: Well, the review for DBE: The Game was pretty much what I expected it to be. Not anything special, but playable enough since it uses the Shin Budokai engine. I'll probably pick it up before long now that the price has gone down. Also:

- The option to change the camera angle was indeed in Shin Budokai: Another Road before this game.
- From word-of-mouth, I think 'Neo Piccolo' is supposedly a little faster and stronger than normal Piccolo, but probably not drastically if you didn't even notice it while play.
- 16 Hours to unlock Piccolo? Yeah, I think after I've beaten story mode once by myself, I'll find a save file.
Dragon Ball ended in 1997.

One of the things I'd really missed while being away from this site is the podcasts. They're just so listenable! I've put a bunch of them on my DS and listen to them in bed or in the shower.

Just a couple of comments on this ep: Aya Hirano is indeed known for playing characters like Haruhi Suzumiya and Konata, but she's also played some really quiet and sweet characters like the lead character from school comedy Hyakko. In that she's this really polite, modest and shy girl who gets embarrassed easily. Of the roles I've seen her in, this is the closest to Dende. She'll probably play him as a much more serious version of this character.

A bit of the first ep: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izzbxfXSTI0

As for the hardcore thing, well I think a lot of what constitutes what hardcore means is the kind of person you are and the culture you exist in. In general, Japanese and American culture tends to lead to more "geeky" behaviour, with comic cons, comic shops and so on being far, far more popular than they are here. The average American will have heard of DBZ but even the more nerdy of my friends haven't heard of DBZ. By that token, even watching the dub on Cartoon Network is seen as pretty geeky/hardcore here. I mean, I have friends who didn't even watch cartoons, read comic or buy figures when they were kids.

The one other guy I know that knows of and likes DBZ is seriously into it - knew about DBE and got pissed off when Piccolo looked grey and stuff like that - but there's no way he'd get round to reading the manga. He's never joined a forum for anything but he had a picture of Shikimaru (Naruto) on the wall next to his bed which he'd jokingly tell his girlfriend helps him get to sleep at night. But he wouldn't go to a convention, he'd rather be shot than cosplay, he wouldn't go on a forum...

To be fair, that "16 hours" seems to include all the characters and more importantly all of the gallery unlocks. To unlock Neo Piccolo, since all that involves is a play-through of story mode with all "A"-ranks and then a play-through of the extra story mode... that's probably only 2-3 hours if you're good enough to not mess up.

I just had no interest.

I'm a big fan of Haruhi and Aya Hirano, so while it will be fun to hear her in DBKai I would have loved to have her in a larger role <_<

My personal favorite Dragon Ball connection: hearing the entire cast of Haruhi yell "KAMEHAMEHA" in the opening to Suzumiya Haruhi-chan no Yuutsu. (the song is mostly nonsense and ranomdly yelling Kamehameha fits in perfectly)

Okay, gotcha. I should be able to pull that off without too much trouble.

THE MELANCHOLY OF DENDE SUZUMIYA!

Makes sense, since five minutes on Namek lasts about as long as August 8th in the Haruhiverse! (I kid. I don't have much of a problem at all with Endless Eight.)

Ok, gonna give my thoughts on the full episode after I finish it. Just had to say something about the Aya Hirano news while it was fresh in my mind.

I'm actually grateful to it because I lost my internet connection from Endless Eight 2 through to Endless Eight 8 so it effectively paused the series for me.

Holy shit. A Videl AND Haruhi fan? You're racking up big points with me, sir.

Anyways, finished the episode a few minutes ago. To maybe throw another hat into the ring on the heart virus storyline, let's not forget heart problems can be caused by high stress situations, such as fighting. Course, that was probably already assumed, but I don't remember hearing it mentioned by anybody.

As for the game... Enchanto? McRoberts? Come on, Namco! Make your freethrows! And as for Neo Piccolo... They didn't even change his blasts? They could've least put in a Demon Drill! It's hard to believe this is the same company that put out Sparking and the Tekken series.

I will say, though, that camera system sounds kinda nice.

All in all, another stellar episode, as expected.

I would have loved if they had used this Shenlong instead of the American Godzilla we got:

I'm currently DLing the podcast, to interestingly put it on my PSP while listening to it on the way to work. So I haven't heard Mike's reaction to the game.

My opinion is this, the fighting engine is solid, and easy to pick up and play. It's far from the game's weakness. Moves are pretty varied, I love how absurdly wacky it is to use Yamcha and unleash his special of running people over in his hummer. The roster list could have been fleshed out some more. Throw in Carrey Fuller, Sifu Norris, etc. The main problem is AI that is pretty dumb, as well as a three year old graphic engine that is showing its age on a handheld where games like Gran Turismo, MotorStorm: Arctic Edge, and Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny are on the cusp of release. Lack of Infrastructure mutliplayer is lacking, as is Game Sharing. Load times are decent, could be better. And the game definately could have used some voice acting in more then just the taunts, and fights. Overall it's a flawed game, taking the flaws of it's 2006, and 2007 predacessors and bringing them to 2009, but it doesn't deserve to be the worst rated PSP game on Metacritic, especially with Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen being a completely unplayable hot mess on PSP (A TRANSFORMERS GAME WHERE YOU CAN'T TRANSFORM. GENIUS).

If anyone wants to see some more stuff from the DBE game. Check the game's thread here. I posted like literally a hundred or two snapshots from the game. Including some of the bonus stuff. I'd hurry though, as it seems my links are starting to expire. There's also a link to a save file with Neo Piccolo's story arc unlocked in there somewhere.

I recently bought a PSP-3000, but I already own Shin Budokai so I won't be buying this.

But yeah, it's not terrible if it's just Shin Budokai with a new coat of paint, just average.
If challenge had a taste, you'd be quite delicious.
