Nice review. Not one that I agree with, but still nice. Here's the standpoint I come from that makes me come off as a Kai fanboy:
  • Manga nerd (I have the Tankoubon in English and Japanese)
  • I've seen a large portion of Dragonball Z in Japanese... once
  • The filler in DBZ really got on my nerves after becoming so attached to the manga
  • While very attached to the Japanese DBZ music because of the first three movies on DVD, I'm much more attached to the video game music going all the way back to my playing emulated DBZ games back in the '90s
  • I get to experience Kai as it airs week-by-week and as it's released on Blu-Ray in Japan! I'm not coming into it after it's already over!
So, I really like Kai. I can definitely see where TV version fans are coming from, though. I'd feel the same way if someone decided to "refresh" the old Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon with new music, random bits and pieces drawn in HD, and with some cast changes. It'd either be an interesting little "meh" kind of thing or it'd be something I'd ultimately not like. In the end, I'd stick to my DVDs of the original TV show as it originally aired in the '80s and '90s.

As a manga fan who hasn't too much attachment to the TV version, though, Kai is very enjoyable.

I was waiting for you guys to touch on the Aya Hirano situation for the entire episode. I thought you forgot, then you touched on it right at the end

As for Kai, although I feel that Z is superior in most aspects, I can't say that I completely don't care about the show like Mike, Corey and Meri.

The horrible pacing filler of DBZ is the main thing that keeps me from marathoning the show over and over. I'm not saying that the pacing is neccesarily great in Kai, but I think it's certainly better than Z's. That's pretty much the only reason why I watch Kai, and why I will watch Kai in the future.

I just wish it still had Shinsuke Kikuchi's score

While it does scream "stunt casting" to give Aya Hirano the role of Dende, I don't mind it because I really like the voices she gave Haruhi and Konata (I haven't seen Death Note in forever so I forget how her Misa was). Actually, if I had to throw someone from "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" into a minor DB role, I'd pick Tomokazu Sugita; the guy gives Kyon an unintentionally hilariously deep voice. I look at Kyon and I just don't picture that deep radio voice, so maybe its just the contrast between it that amuses me, I don't know. :?

My thoughts on the first season of Kai:
-I like the new opening animation, I kinda wish the ending animation was more...animated, than it was panning across scenes.
-I like both Dragon Soul and Yeah Break Care Break; the latter reminds me of DDR songs, if there were to ever be a DBDDR, I'd want that song on it.
-Happy they fixed the Vegeta hair-color inconsistency. If only they'd stop making his hair dark purple in some of the newer promo art; it's black or really-really-dark-brown. Not purple. >_O
-While the absence of the filler clips aren't overly bothering me (though they do bug me enough to keep me from wanting to buy the Kai dvds) I don't think its going to really irritate me until they get to things like "The Driving Episode" and especially "Goku and Vegeta's Journey Inside Buu"--two of my favorite sets of filler. I hope Toei doesn't cut those from Kai.
-The redrawn artwork used to make me cringe in the beginning, but they've gotten better at it, so now--not so much.
-Bulma's seiyuu does sound like she's phoning it in.
-Vegeta's seiyuu just sounds tired sometimes, though I think that's more of an age/smoking issue. It baffles me as to why you would smoke if you choose to work in a profession that relies heavily on your voice and the power of your lungs.
-I can feel tiny fringes of age in Ms. Nozawa's voice, but unless you listen to Z and Kai back-to-back its not that noticeable.
-I really, REALLY want some brand new from-scratch animated special/movie to come from all this. "Ossu!" was a God-send to me and with how Kai is doing in the ratings in addition to the whole "making the series more relevant" I would love it if Toei would get up and make something huge and new. I have to wonder if they're just really phobic of making new Dragon Ball because of how awful GT ended up (imo) but seriously; could you imagine a feature-length film for DB done with some of the effects Toei's got at their disposal now? Also, I need more new Goku and Vegeta interaction. I said it in another thread and I love the fact that as of "Ossu!", Goku's decided that his new hobby is irritating Vegeta for fun. (And because its Goku, he NEVER gets caught. XD ) Its like he's suddenly become self-aware of the fact that him just being around upsets Vegeta and he wants to push the envelope as far as it can go. He never seemed self-aware of it in the series; so its like all of Vegeta's "Pay attention to ME, Kakarrotto, I'm going to DEFEAT you!" has come back to bite him in the rear.
-The music in general in Kai....eh, some arrangements are alright, but I still prefer the orchestral-type music from Z.

I have been watching Kai, but not live; this is mostly due to rl-related conditions that have been messing up my Saturday evenings for most of the year (planning to fix this, but not because of Kai, but because of other rl-stuff). I think one of the reasons I look forward to watching Kai is because I love compare-and-contrast stuff like this. (Which is why I'm kinda sad that Kanzentai stopped their huge in-depth inspections.) Also, as weird as it is, watching Kai and then watching Z makes certain things in Z sound a billion times more amazing. ^^; (Specifically characters like Vegeta, Bulma, and Yajirobe). Though I really do like Kai's Luffy!Kuririn. I so rarely get the chance to see any animated One Piece, but I've seen enough where I recognize that voice as Luffy and find it SO amusing. X3

The two Chi-Chi seiyuu....there's a distinctly different feel I get from each of them. The earlier Chi-Chi's seiyuu has a more youthful voice to her; she's a character I can definitely imagine at a karaoke bar excitedly singing to the lyrics (as in two of her image songs on the character discs) while the later seiyuu has a more adult, and more mature tone in her voice and is easier for me to picture reprimanding Goku for pulling ridiculous stunts.

*Looks up at her post* Oh, wow, that's really long. Sorry for the length. ^^;;

Great podcast you guys! Can't wait to see what you have planned for #200!

Ah... I missed Meri this episode. Anyway...

As far as Kai goes, I'm still going to keep watching it, because as of right now, it's the only way I'm going to watch Dragonball in Japanese. I can't stand the Japanese music, and while Shunsuke Kikuchi's music is a high point for you, it isn't for me. On the other hand, Kenji Yamamoto's music is a selling point for me, so... Yup. More Kai for me!

Wow. I honestly can't believe you read this particular email of mine. =D

I still need to have my dad actually listen to your responses though (And to clarify, my dad is older than everyone that's been on the podcast as of now). I'll have to make him, like, a cheat-sheet though, so he can understand some things, like what Otakon is.

As far as the actual responses go, they were more or less what I expected. As I said in the email, you guys have given answers to similar questions, so I wasn't too surprised. The only exception was when you said that you do it partly for self-gratification. Which makes sense, but I hadn't actually heard it before.

I do need to clear up two things.

Mike, I just want to tell you that I find it incredibly endearing that you call me Will. I'm totally down with that. But just to clarify, my name is Willie. As in W-I-L-L-I-E. Just putting that out there.

However! Howeverhoweverhoweverhowever!

I cannot have you going around saying things incorrectly. Therefore!

My username is pronounced as "Venom Sym-bee-oat." NOT "Venom-Sym-BI-oat." That should do it. ;)

Overall, good episode.

I once asked Tomato if he did the first 13 episodes of Dragon Ball and he said that he did indeed translate those episodes as well.

I think you may be going a little overboard with the mourning, there.
Wouldn't we be crying our ass off if Nozawa died..? :?
I find it hard to become emotionally connected with people who I have never met and never will. Would be sad, yes, but I would just kinda go "Oh... well, shit..." and move on.
So, someone who voiced the character you grew up watching in one of your favorite shows and still incorporate into your life isn't worth a few tears?

By the by, great episode.

To some people it really isn't, when you take a step back and look at the grand scheme of things it's really far down on the list of things to be crying over.

Agreed on all accounts.

The only thing I could cry for would be the world being bombarded with terrorist bombus.

o_O But there's nothing wrong with being upset that someone you got so used to hearing died in a car crash.

It's strange, for the most part I kind of feel like I'm in my own group here. The bulk of the heavy Kai supporters seem to be people who don't have much emotional attachment to the Anime. While most people who HAVE that attachment to the Anime (like myself) dislike Kai. I get the feel that these people almost feel like if they enjoy Kai, they're someone disrespecting Z. Like in order for them to prefer Z they have to not care about Kai.

This is why I feel I'm almost in my own group. I have insane attachment to the Anime and of course I prefer Z to Kai. But I still am in total love with Kai. I don't have the need to keep comparing it to Z. I realize that that's always gonna happen. I'm not saying people should not compare it to Z. What I'm saying is, I feel at times there's overreaction to certain things in Kai. I thoroughly enjoy watching Kai every week and will continue to watch Kai every week until the series ends.

Like I said, I prefer Z as a whole. But I really enjoy Kai for what it is. I like the lack of filler. I like the speedy pace and how it keeps with the Manga. I think it's a great idea. Yeah there's some filler left in and for some reason, instances of the Manga cut out. But I can get by that. In the same way that I can live with the bad filler in Z. I can live with things in Kai that I disagree with. Because the product as a whole I find to be very enjoyable. I also really enjoy the musical score. I'm finding myself starting to really feel this music as an alternate track to the DragonBall Franchise. I really like that they're modernizing the series. It's not like in enjoying Kai's music I suddenly have to dislike Kikuchi's score.

But anyway, bottom line is. For me, Kai is a success.
