The new cast information regarding who is being retained is interesting. I know some people here won't agree, but I'm really glad they got Sean to agree to come back and play Goku for Kai. Sean and Chris as Goku and Vegeta may not be the ideal choices for all of the fanbase, but as a big dub fan, I would be very disappointed if they didn't reprise their roles (well, Chris was never much of a question, but Sean was).

I'm also happy to hear that Linda is reprising her role as Freeza (*dodges rock*). I recognize that it's very different from the original, but I have two points on that. First, the voice she uses for Freeza is, in my opinion, very "lizard-like," and Freeza's kind of a lizard. I don't know; when I first heard Freeza's dub voice, I always felt that it actually fit the look of the character (although not necessarily the demeanor). Second, I think Freeza is a character whose dub performance would be substantially improved simply by using a better script. The games are great examples of this.

As a final note, I'm glad that Sonny is returning as Krillin. I know this wasn't a big, unexpected thing, but I really, really like his portrayal of Krillin. I always felt that he nailed the role.

I'm happy Ms. Young is coming back as Freeza because I like to see the Japanese fans bitch and moan about it.

Except, ya' know... plenty of the FUNimation dub fanbase has a problem with it, too.

We get it. You don't like the anime. Take your bullshit comments elsewhere, please.

Oh no, I'm quite looking forward to Kai. I'm just glad they're not changing cast based on the opinions of people who aren't going to watch it anyway.

FUNimation dub fans, who are going to watch FUNimation's dub, who have a problem with the casting choice for Freeza, and who have voiced these opinions...

... aren't going to watch it? Huh?

Well, define "dubbie".

These are all terms with completely arbitrary uses depending on the person. More often than not things like "dubbie" and "purist" are used pejoratively... then again, the word "otaku" was also originally meant to be degrading (someone being so obsessed with something that they never leave their "house", where the word gets it origin), but it's been accepted as a badge of honor.

To me, a "dubbie" is someone who, knowingly or otherwise, sits back and lets a "reversioning" be shoved down their throat with no regard or care for the original version. Everything is taken at face-value for what it is, without ever once questioning why decisions are made or how what they watch could possibly be "better" or even just "different". When confronted with knowledge or evidence to the contrary (ya' know, that an original version might even exist), they run around screaming like a child with their hands over their ears.

It's a term that's mostly irrelevant in today's North American anime culture... what, with the majority of fans preferring to watch dubs, and dubs that (for the most part) follow close enough to the original version that we no longer have things like Robotech and Card Captors.

Ever the anomaly, DBZ rears its ugly head, though...

Like whatever you like. Be proud of it. Stand up for it. Engage in conversation. Be respectful. Provide examples, but don't fall back on emotion if that's all you have and expect that to be sufficient for someone else. Somewhat jumping off of what penguintruth recently said, it's not like we all get up in the morning, look up at the beautiful sky, stretch out a little bit, have our cup of coffee or tea, and think about how we can torment an opposing side of fandom.

Maybe I should've said "dub fan". But then again, I'm a sub fan too. I guess my own interpretation of "dubbie" is actually what you just said. I'm not really a "dubbie" or even a "purist"; I'm just a fan of Dragon Ball and somewhat a fan of Japanese anime in general.

So, yeah... Yay Dragon Ball (Z) Kai! ^_^

With Stephanie Nadolny and Tiffany Vollmer out of the picture, I guess we'll never get a redub of Dragon Ball movies 1, 2, and 3. Sadface.

Or maybe Monica Rial's Bulma will be great, and she and Colleen Clinkenbeard or whoever they get to voice Kid Goku will just continue to do the voices for any eventual redubs of them.

Personally, I'm okay with Colleen Clinkenbeard voicing Gohan. But not Kid Goku. If I didn't want Stephanie Nadolny voicing Kid Goku then I would just stick to the current dub.

But that's just me.

Either way, I'm pretty desperate for a rerelease of these movies in vein of the steelbooks. I'd at least like to have it in Japanese.

I liked Freeza's Dub voice.

I just think the script she gets is terrible, speaking in another language to Goku made no sense.

This is the smartest thing I've read in a while.

As for Freeza's English dub voice actor... of course I don't like it, but I've never thought it was any worse than some of the other voices in the show. =\ I prefer Freeza over Schemmel's Kaio.

Well, according to FUNimation, the scripts were so horribly Engrish and their translators sucked a lot. I guess they sucked so much that, "Hahahahaha," in Japanese was too complicated for them.

Wasn't it because the animation at that part was too crazy to just have him laugh (even though that's what he did in Japanese)?

What's Funi's track record with other dubs like? Ignoring the possibility of them keeping their old terminology for the sake of their existing audience, would they be expected to use Kienzan and such, or some translated name?

We can probably expect Funimation to keep a lot of the old terminology for consistency's sake. If they're still calling him Krillin, don't expect him to use anything but a Destructo Disc.

Yes, but ignoring that, if this was the first time they'd ever got hold of the series, what would the expectation be?
