Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
They'd most likely translate it as "Ki Cutter" or something similar.

Hm, if this was the first time? They'd probably still translate it as something in English.Amigo Ten wrote:Yes, but ignoring that, if this was the first time they'd ever got hold of the series, what would the expectation be?
Something a little more subtle than "Destructo Disc", I'm presuming.

But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He's laughed at least a couple times with that crazy animation. It's a Freeza thing.ThunderPX wrote:Wasn't it because the animation at that part was too crazy to just have him laugh (even though that's what he did in Japanese)?
Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
They like to throw in jokes of questionably hilarity, but it's never been to such an extreme as DBZ. Besides comedies such as Desert Punk or Shin-chan, their dubs that aren't Dragon Ball are extremely close to the original script.Amigo Ten wrote:What's Funi's track record with other dubs like? Ignoring the possibility of them keeping their old terminology for the sake of their existing audience, would they be expected to use Kienzan and such, or some translated name?

Their Dragon Ball and GT dubs have pretty accurate scripts. Sometimes they will alter a minor line or tone down a sexual joke, but it's nothing major.

Some things are almost impossible to translate, no matter the accuracy of the script.
I remember watching even the Dragon Ball dub with subtitles on, and being bugged at how off the dub script was... =\

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
In terms of plot points being completely rewritten, or in terms of rewording of dialogue to fit in with the timing of the mouth movements? The dialogue was quite different in the first 13 episodes however, because FUNimation reused the old Sabanized scripts when they went back and re-dubbed it.Mountain wrote:I remember watching even the Dragon Ball dub with subtitles on, and being bugged at how off the dub script was... =\
In any dub the dialogue is going to differ, simply due to language differences. However, the dialogue is reworded to carry across the same points as the original, but is made to sound natural within the allotted time frame given by the mouth movements. Otherwise, dialogue would be stretched out or spoken incredibly quickly to fit it all in.

I wonder if they'll use "Son" this time.

Eh? They have? I've heard complete rewrites even in DB and GT...Metalwario64 wrote:You mean their dubs that aren't Dragon Ball Z?B wrote:their dubs that aren't Dragon Ball are extremely close to the original script.

There's the infamous Samuel scene with Blue, which I actually prefer to the original, as ludicrous as it is. But it's still fair to say they dubbed DB a lot better than they did DBZ.

That falls under 'sexual joke' which is one of the things they tone down/alter and is beyond minor. I doubt that ANY dubbing company out there would keep that line, even in this day.DemonRin wrote:Japanese - Bulma: (To General Blue) Y... you Must be Gay!Metalwario64 wrote:You mean their dubs that aren't Dragon Ball Z?B wrote:their dubs that aren't Dragon Ball are extremely close to the original script.

That all depends on what time of the day you're playing the show. "You must be gay," wasn't really something likely to be found on Toonami. Adult Swim or the Syfy channel, on the other hand...Xyex wrote:That falls under 'sexual joke' which is one of the things they tone down/alter and is beyond minor. I'm talking about keeping it in Dragonball. No matter what slot they aired the show in the fact it's aimed at kids would leave the line out in order to avoid angry soccer moms.Kendamu wrote:That all depends on what time of the day you're playing the show. Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
They removed all verbal references to Blue being gay, but they did not change his character. He is still obviously and very stereotypically homo. Its just a lot more subtle in the dub. Can't say I prefer it that way, but they handled that much better than General Tao.
I think the closest they got to outright saying he is gay is when he says "Ewww! I will not touch you you're a girl."

I know what you're talking about. It's not like I got lost on my way here and thought we were talking about a different show. My point is about Dragonball. If they had simply planned on releasing it on DVD or playing it at a later time, the gay reference wouldn't necessarily be put. Just refer to the UUC stuff being aired unedited on CN just before Toonami back in like '05-ish.Xyex wrote:I'm talking about keeping it in Dragonball. Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
The UUC's didn't include any gay jokes that I'm aware of. Just blood, death, and swearing. Which is a lot more acceptable in the states than sex related stuff.Kendamu wrote:I know what you're talking about. Sure, it might squeak through today, but I'd not be surprised if it didn't. And really it's not that major a change. Blue's still left gay, they still have him showing an aversion to girls and all that. The character's no different, they just don't bash you over the head with him being gay.
Tao's listed as a mercenary in the games now, so it's something the realized they goofed on and fixed. I'm guessing no one bothered to fact check the first time Tao appeared (which I think was in their Z run) and they just saw him working with the RRA and assumed he was an active member.but they handled that much better than General Tao.

He is called Mercenary Tao in the Dragon Ball dub. It was very confusing for me when I first heard good ol' prospector Roshi talking about General Tao and Mastermind Gero.Xyex wrote:Tao's listed as a mercenary in the games now, so it's something the realized they goofed on and fixed. And hey, maybe Roshi's just getting senile in his old age.

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
So the original cast is returning right? That's cool, only actor I like in it is Christopher Sabat as Vegeta, at least they will go with accurate script......
I won't get good dub in english again, sorry, but I CAN'T STAND THAT FREEEEZA!!!!
They also should make it with correct pronounciation, but Schemmel already killed that possibility in Kai teaser with his: KAMAY HAMAY HA.
My opinion ends.
