Top 3 favourite DBZ Movies

Post by Vegeta Jr » Tue Apr 20, 2010 6:05 pm

Title is self explanatory, what's your top 3?

Mine:
1. Movie 12 - Dragon Ball Z: The Fusion of Resurrection!! Gokū and Vegeta
My absolute favourite, mainly because I first watched the Malaysaian dub of it and it was absolutely hilarious so it holds very fond memories. More 'important' reasons include it having my favourite BGM, interesting story and Fat Gogeta.

2. Movie 9 - Dragon Ball Z: Milky Way at the Brink!! The Super Incredible Guy
My second favourite, has the humans actually do something and I'm a sucker for Tournements. Also it is probably the only one or at least in the very small minority that could actually fit into the timeline.

3. Movie 6 - Dragon Ball Z: Clash!! The Power of 10 Billion Warriors
This was a hard decision as it was between this and movie 7. 6 however takes 3rd place because I love the setting of Namek and the tag team of Goku and Vegeta in it. I also find Metal Coola to be one of the most intimidating villains in the series due to having seemingly infinite 'clones' and the ability to use Instantaneous Movement. Hero is also one of my favourite credit themes.

Again notable mention to movie 7, this is mainly because I absolutely love the Jinzoningen and the Ice setting. It also seemed to have the most Humour, yet retaining its seriousness. It also showed the other side of their lives, shopping with Chichi and such which is always fun to watch.

3 - DragonBall Z Movie 9 ~ Ginga Giri-Giri!! Butchigiri no Sugoi Yatsu
I just loooove this movie. Seeing Gohan take care of business (despite him doing that in the Garlic Jr. arc, but no.) is awesome. I hate and love Goku, but it's nice to see his son beat up and DEFEAT someone (besides Cell.)

2 - DragonBall Z Movie 3 Chikyuu Marugoto Choukessen
The background music. Nuff said.

1 - DragonBall Movie 3 Makafushigi Daibouken
I just LOVE this one. I love how they bring Tenshinhan and Chaozu and even Tao Pai Pai into the Red Ribbon arc, in a way.

Can I be honest? I don't really like any of them. They're all too condensed and, well, meaningless for me to enjoy.

But I do like some less than others, so here's Sprite Satan's three least most disliked movies.

3) The One with the Big Tree (Dragon Ball Z movie 3)

There's a video on Youtube of a terrible dub for this. That alone makes it somewhat worthy. You also have Yamucha in a blue suit and having his brand-new flying car thing destroyed. Isn't this the one with "Dun dun dun... dun dun dun..."? If so, yeah, that's cool too.

Besides that, bleh. I see Tullece as laziness, not symbolism.

2) The One with Janemba (Dragon Ball Z movie 12)

Everyone escapes from hell, so there's a lot of cool cameos. I'm also in favour of more Saiyaman and Saiyaman 2. There's the introduction of Gogeta and Paikuhan is pretty cool here. Besides that, it kinds of drags. But that's enough to bring it to number two.

It's all a big foregone conclusion. I mean, even more than the series and movies usually are. It's literally just waiting for Goku and Vegeta to do their fusion and win.

1) The One where they retell the first half of Dragon Ball
(Dragon Ball movie 3)

Ok, I lied. I think I actually like this one. Because it's interesting, and it introduces new dynamics and roles for already existing characters. In other words, it shows creativity, which is always good. In fact, despite being a 'retelling' of a big chunk of Dragon Ball, it is still more creative. than most of the "original" Dragon Ball Z movies. Also, lulz at Chaozu's beloved being a doll.

So, yay, congratulations, Makafushigi Daibouken! You are not only my least hated movie, you're also the one movie I like!

...

Crap, the topic says "Top 3 favourite DBZ Movies." Get lost, Makafushigi Daibouken. It's time for a new champion!

1) The One with Bojack (Dragon Ball Z movie 9)

There's a lot of neat small things in this one. Tenshinhan versus Trunks. Yamucha falling into the water. Mister Satan's outfit. Really, I actually enjoy the first third or so of the movie until, you know, the plot kicks in. Thumbs up for Vegeta being a bum though.

Besides that, bleh. Bojack Cell's it up, Gohan goes Incredible Hulk, fantastic stuff. Still, it's enough to make THIS my favourite Dragon Ball Z movie. Congratulations, One with Bojack!

My top 3 favorites are...
Movie 5: Cooler's just badass and an awesome villain. My favorite moment is when Goku transforms into a ssj, and gives that bird in his hand some of his ki.

Movie 8: The haters can say whatever they want about Broly, but I thought his battle with Goku and company was beautiful. So not overated.

Movie 13: This is the only movie where kid Trunks doesn't annoy me. His chemistry with Tapion is always very touching to watch. In place of Tapion's brother, Minosha, is Trunks, right there to make friends.

My Top 3:

3. Movie 13 (Wrath of the Dragon Fist) - Awesome movie. Introduced a highly original character, Tapion, and showed how Trunks got his sword. Great conclusion of the DBZ movie franchise.

2. Movie 5 (Cooler's Revenge) - This was like the second DBZ movie I ever saw and fell in love with it. I've always thought Cooler was way cooler than Freeza.

1. Movie 2 (The World's Strongest) - This was THE first DBZ I ever saw (and first DBZ DVD I ever bought). It's very nostalgic for me and I love this movie. and is my most favourite DBZ movie of all time.

(Movie 1: Dead Zone would have to be my number 4.)
"You must have faith in who you are." - Gohan (Dragonball Evolution)

3. Movie 4- I really liked the fight between Goku and Slug plus it was the first movie that I owned.

2.Movie 1- Goku and Piccolo really kicked ass in this one plus Ocean Dub kid Gohan finale

1. Its a tie between Z movie 8 and Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle- Both movies are grate, Broly's LSSj dominace is awsome and the whole trip into the Devils Castle is fun.
It's not too late. One day, it will be.

Didn't we do this a few months ago? Well, I guess that's what you get on a board dedicated to a show decades old, eventually the same thing is going to come up.

My top 3:

1) Movie #9 - This is, to me, the perfect DBZ movie. The tournament set up is cool, I like Gohan's character design, the soundtrack is probably the best work Kikuchi did for DBZ, and there's a lot of great action and comedy in it. I don't own a copy of this (or any other DBZ movie, frankly) on DVD, but hope for the day that a Dragon Box The Movies comes out over here just so I could get the DBox version of this movie. I'd probably put this somewhere in my top fifteen anime movies, seriously (though not high on the list).

2) Movie #1 - I love the art, music, and action in this movie. It's very "late DB, early DBZ" in its art and feel of its story. It has a very mid-DB feel to it, with much more martial arts moves being used than ki blasts and I love the continued rivalry between Goku and Piccolo in it. Another thing to note is that Goku actually fails to prevent the villain from obtaining his goal. The villain obtains immortality close to the middle of the movie and it goes on from there. It's interesting. And of course, Gohan saves the day, which is another bonus.

3) Movie #12 - You have to love this movie for two reasons: action and comedy. It's an extremely creative DBZ movie with all sorts of weird and funny things going on, but the action is also pretty decent. It's sort of a fan service movie, because you get to see all those old villains pop up, you get plenty of Goten and Trunks hijinks, and you get to see Goku and Vegeta fusion kicking ass. Who can ask for more?

He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

#3- DBZ movie 4. Yup, Sluggu. "Waaaah it's a rehash it's stupid waaah." You know what? I don't care ^^ Every movie is a rehash and this one has good art, fun visuals (Iguana street's neon going up for example), interesting new tidbits about Nameccians, fantabulous interactions between Pic, Gohan and Goku aaaaand ba-dum- Nameccians kicking Sayiajin ass. Always good. Sluggu's motivations may be about as shallow as a beta bowl but he makes me grin (y'know, like that one he gives when he shoves his giant head through the building and spooks the begeezus out of Son) all the same. Oh yeah, and that adorable noise Pic's ears make when they pop back out. And Gohan's whistle song. And did I mention he can only be beaten with Nameccian help like in that totally sweet jumping shot where the big shadow fades between Son and earless Pic? I love this movie.

#2- DBZ movie 2. I think the Pioneer VHS of World's Strongest may have been the first piece of Dragonball I ever owned, it's fuzzy so far back. Regardless I still have the tape nestled in by my manga and I'm even fonder of it than the Nameccian-centric Movie 4. I love the era it's in, I love the early Z art style, I love the interactions between the characters and Muten Roshi getting to do something to remind us who this old man used to me. The kaioken-breaking-out-of-the-ice scene is stunning. I love, love, love the battle between Pic and Son with Gohan watching on helplessly- the choreography, the physical animation of the movements and how everyone involved reacts to the battle. And it's hysterical too- Son Goku running around in the snow yelping about how cold it is? Adorable, it's still like this that makes me like him despite myself. It's hard to get better than this movie for me.

But even with all that, it's no contest for the top spot. My favorite movie is my favorite part of the entirety of the Dragonball franchise and has been ever since I first got my hands on that beautiful VHS-

#1- DBZ Movie 1. Dead Zone. Aaw yeah. Take everything I love the most about the series- the DB/DBZ time period and its stellar art style, Dragonworld lore/mythology/backstory, 23rd Budokai era fighting (just before the ki stuff took over when a lot of the fighting was still hand to hand much of the time), the characters involved, Pic still young and seething and out for blood, the Child of Kattatsu's struggles with himself and the godhood, Kami getting to do shit, a phenomenal dub where Scott gets to shine, drunken toddlers year olds singing and imagining rooms full of freakish chibi dinosaurs dancing around some poor minion- should I keep going? I love it, it's perfect, and the only thing I could ask more of it is an extended fight between Son and Pic when they think the fight with Garlic Jr. is over (ala movie 2). I've watched this movie three times in a row before :D

3) Movie #3 - The Tree of Deus Ex Machina

I really liked the fights in this movie and although the story was a little weak, Tules was an awesome character. Oh and Yamcha gets owned three times in one movie.

2) Movie #1 - Return My Dead Zone

Original plot, well choreographed fights and Kami actually does something. :P

1) Movie #9 - Ginga Super Mega Ultra Decisive Battle to Save the Entire Universe!!!

I loved the Tenka'ichi Dai Budoukai. I loved the humour with Mr. Satan. I loved how Trunks came back from the future. I loved the score (both dub and original). I loved how Gohan is the one protecting the Earth and I loved how we see the return of SS2.

DBZ movies 1-4 were great. Anything with Broly (after Paragus died) is total shit.

EDIT: I guess it's because there were no Super Saiyans. Everyone was a good power level.

Movie 1: I'm not sure exactly why, given I only ever owned the Big Green dub and was perpetually perplexed by how Kami could suddenly be glowing with power, then when we next see him he's on the ground gasping like an emphysemic pensioner. But it has the same charm that pervades all of pre-Saiyan Dragon Ball.

Movie 4: First one I owned in english, was aso the Big Green dub, but soundly enjoyed it. The main thing is the setting, it's completely fresh, with all the neon lighting on that road Goku fights Slug on. Plus, the scene where Piccolo fights that big orange Dodoria like guy (forget his name).

Movie 12: The one I looked forward to seeing most. borrowed a downloaded fansub when I was 12. Gogeta always fascinated me, at the time I watched this I'm sure CN in the UK was just starting the Androids story.

Explanations are kinda half-assed, apologies, but I'm off to lunch. :D

Exactly how I see it. That's why I loved Dragon Ball and early Z so much because everyone wasn't UBER strong and power levels weren't such a big deal and not even around.

1 - Cooler's Revenge (The Incredible Mightiest vs. Mightiest) and Lord Slug (Super Saiyan Son Goku) - Perfect scenes for Coola getting vengeance for his Younger Brother, Freeza. Good music. But that applies to the previous movie as well when Slug arrived on Earth.

2 - The Path to Power (The Path to Ultimate Strength) - Modernized music, manga colours matched and Goku wore the GT-like clothing. Ending backported from the DBGT's opening, DAN DAN Kokoro. Sometimes I watched it.

3 - Bojack Unbound (The Galaxy at the Brink!! The Super Incredible Guy) - I may possess the edited version, but likely I love the uncut better. However, the BGM looks similar to the ones on DBGT.

Fifth movie - This the second movie I ever saw, Coola seemed to me more ruthless then Freeza and that transformation with cover on his mouth. Damn!! Also voiced by Meteor Nakao:D
And Super Saiyan transformation resembling that one on Namek. Great plotline and Sauzer is a lot sympathic villain by design. What I love is the opening scene with Bardock's monologue towards Freeza, that gives me shivers everytime I watch it. Only thing I don't agree is with Daizenshuu stated it's canon to series. If it was, Goku will power up to super in a few seconds and won't need to pushed that hard.
This movie is my number one!

First movie - I love the atmosphere in this one, the colors, music and that it connects Dragon Ball and Z series in terms of anime altough not canon. There are great fights, great story with villain who shares some backstory with Kami, Goku and Krillin, Piccolo still in the roots after 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai and the possible fight versus Goku enar the end of the movie.
This movie is magical in some way, actually it's a film with big ''F''. It's well balanced and in my opinion only movie which stands on it's own without knowing the base series, I can imagine it in theathre. Other movies for me aren't actual movies, but only some add-on or spin-off of the series with what-ifs.

Ninth movie - my third favorite maybe mostly because of it's zero canon contradiction, that I consider it as part of the series. I also like designs of Bojack and his henchmen which are great in color scheme and ''pirate'' appearance. I like the idea of tournament with all star team with Goku dead. What I don't like on this movie much is the music, which is rare for me in case of Japanese score, but I can't accept that funny and happy tone mixed with few serious pieces. It degrades the threat from the villains in my opinion.

3: Goku Sidestory! (GT TV special)
Hope I'm not bending the rules here.
Yes, the only good thing GT shat out was a TV special. We get to see an entirely new character , Goku.Jr go on an epic journey down memory lane, to where the Dragon Ball saga all started. With an emotional finale which I won't spoil for anybody who has yet to see it.

2: Movie 9
Gohan is great in this movie, being the first to (finally) take lead role from Goku (Goku, I love ya, but stop hogging everybody's screen time!). A satisfying ending, with SS2 badassery.

1: Movie 13
Wow, a Dragon Ball movie with actual character development? A new character who isn't a bad guy, and actually forms bonds with the current cast?! Sign me up!

Don't really care for most of the movies. Forty-five minutes of plotless fighting, no matter how well-animated, is a snoozer. Here are the ones I can still kind of enjoy:

5. DBZ Movie 1 - This one can actually get away with forty-five minutes of plotless fighting because of how gorgeous it is. This is some of the best action in the entire series.

4. DBZ Movies 10 and 11 - I like these for the same reason. It takes them a while to get into the action, they don't take themselves deadly seriously, and less-used characters get the chance to shine. That, and I'm a softy for the "next gen" characters. But seriously, you have Videl, Trunks, Goten, Android 18, Mr. Satan, and even Krillin (sometimes dressed as Piccolo) picking up the slack, and that's awesome. I hate Brolli as a character, but the movies he features in are some of the best (even movie 8 at least had a plot and decent running time).

3. DB Movie 3 - As someone already said, this is a very creative and entertaining retelling. Completely the opposite of the first two DB movies. And once again, it has a plot. Hooray semblence of a plot!

2. DBZ Movie 13 - This is, as far as I'm concerned, truly the only decent entry in the DBZ movie franchise. It features an actual story, jaw-dropping animation, an original villain (and a kaiju homage!), etc. To be honest, I'm kind of baffled that this isn't automatically the favorite Z movie among the fanbase.

1. DB 10th Anniversary Movie - Because, let's be honest, this is the only thing in the entire run that even attempts to be an actual stand-alone film. The animation is on par with DBZ movie 13, which is incredible, and it has a Tokunaga soundtrack to back it up. Best of the batch without comparison.

I'm actually kind of curious why you like it. Not an insult or anything.

For me, I don't enjoy it because it's the absolute epitome of "Characters fight! The story does not exist!!" that the movies become. And while most of the movies at least look pretty, this one has very standard settings and animation that's actually worse than some of the TV series' best looking episodes.

Yeah, honestly, Movie 7 is probably my least favorite. I don't know if that means I don't like it, but it's never stood out to me. It's just kinda... there. I've probably only watched it a handful of times, and it's never big on my list on those admittedly rare occasions when I decide, "I should watch a DB movie!"
