How to Draw Dragon Ball Characters Video Series

Post by thedarkuniter » Sat Apr 21, 2012 10:32 am

Hey guys, I thought I can do a mini-video on how to draw Dragon Ball characters. To be quite honest, I haven't any Dragon Ball though I like to draw a lot and while the drawings may not be 100 percent to the original drawings, it would still be a fun guide for those who are interested. I did a demo video of me drawing Son Goku as a Kid, though, it's still in its rough stages: http://youtu.be/ur0C2GvF-Xs

To be honest those were pretty painful to watch, you have a LONG way to go before trying to "teach" others how to draw

If I may give some critiques ...

Anatomy - I understand you're trying to imitate Toriyama's style, but Toriyama probably spent time studying real people, before stylising them. So he understands how they work. When you simply copy someone’s style, you don't learn WHY they chose to stylise people in the way they do. So it's best to study really people a lot before attempting stylisation. Life drawing is the best way to learn anatomy. But if you can't or don’t want to, photos are also decent.

A lot of people find it easier to start rendering the torso first rather than drawing the head and working down - this is because the torso dictates the direction of all the limbs and the head. If you draw the head first, you risk having incorrect anatomy as you continue drawing.

Gesture drawing – yeah, it’s a pain. Yeah, it get’s annoying. But your work will greatly improve it you do it every day. If you can’t get to a life drawing class, I suggest websites such as http://www.posemaniacs.com/

Draw from life – Anyone who’s interested in art has probably heard this at some point. Drawing from life is such an important way to practice. Whether it’s still life drawing, drawing people or animals … it’s all good. Your observational skills will grow and that will only benefit you in the long run.

I hope I don't sound harsh, because I absolutely don't mean to! I'm still learning myself, and this is stuff that helped me out.

Good luck with your art.
