I prefer the English dub myself (the Kai one anyway). I'm not huge on the Japanese dub but I don't find it bad by any means. I can still watch and enjoy it in Japanese, I just enjoy it in English more thats all.

Yeah, not really. The original dub of Z was undoubtedly bad. Poorly translated and acted due to low budget and wanting to Americanise for the sake of mass appeal. That's a very different criticism to what nonsense a lot of people come out about the Japanese cast.

Both sides are at fault in these debates though, honestly. Take it from someone that was a dub-only fan for many, many years - my distaste for the original Japanese version for years never came from anything about it itself. I heard Goku's voice, and while it was jarring, just went 'Huh, that's different' and moved on. I always had an interest in the original score, even when I used to prefer the dub one. What kept me out of the Japanese version was how, at the time, absolutely every person it seemed like would jump down your throat for even professing you 'thought the dub was okay'. Jumping a young kid who's a fan and wanting to learn more about the series is pretty much the cruelest thing you can do. So it's kinda funny how the Japanese side is catching it in reverse after all this time.

Here's the real fact of the matter though - no matter which version you prefer, neither version is holy scripture that should never be changed. Fact. And the excessive hate for fans that are, yes, ignorant, rather than just shaking your head and chuckling or, if it was a person that came on this forum for example, helping them grow as a fan, gets pretty old pretty fast.

But maybe that's just me. And to be fair, Youtube comments on anything tend to be pretty god-awful no matter what your stance on something is.

Dub Vs Sub wars are annoying. I just don't see why it bothers people that another person watches it in another language.

Testify!

In all seriousness, I've never thought DBZ needed Americanizing. That always felt like an excuse for unwarranted changes. The story isn't sophisticated, and the story has very broad cross cultural appeal. People get fighting in any language.

Don't get me wrong, you can go watch whatever you want. I just feel like many (note: many, not all) criticisms of the Japanese dub are largely unfounded and due to ignorance as opposed to the very factual points made about Funimation's initial dubbing.

I take offense when someone like Vice tries to compare those passive, non-criticisms in an awful YouTube comment to the many in-depth and well founded criticisms found about the Z dub.

Absolutely not.

I don't claim superiority for liking the Japanese dub. As evident by many posters of this forum; you can be just as knowledgeable about every inch of the series and prefer the English dub. Many users here will very happily go 'yes, the Z dub is flawed but I like it, I grew up on it. I understand there's issues with it but I look past that'.

I take zero issue with that. That's absolutely fine. Heck, I like the Ocean & Westwood dub for christ's sake. Why? I grew up on it! It's an atrocious dub when you hit the Westwood portion but it's still enjoyable to me.

What I take issue with is those who claim the Z dub is somehow undoubtedly perfect in every way and dislike the Japanese for a whole host of absurd reasons that show little to no understanding of the series in any way.

If someone is going around sprouting absurdities about the English dub whilst proclaiming the Japanese one is perfect, I'll take just as many issues with them as the other way round. It's not dub exclusive.

And for that, you have my respect. I wasn't criticizing you specifically, it was more of a comment on how silly it is in the long run that the fandom is as fractured as it has to be, when really it'd be easier if people could just step back and let others enjoy what they want to enjoy. But, again, fans of both sides just seem compelled to nitpick each other.

It also seems like a lot of people are taking the 'ignorant' part of the thread as a fully negative thing. Being ignorant, especially about something that concerns you, is never a good thing, but it's not always the person in question's fault. This is why I again prefer to attempt to help out newer fans rather than lambast them. We were all new to the scene at one point in time.

That's a legit debate.
Which 9 times out of 10 goes absolutely nowhere and ends up bringing the utter worst out of both character's fanbases. That debate goes as deep as manga vs comics. If you wanted a clear answer then Goku would have to fight every non-retconned Superman and win the majority. Say theres ten versions of Superman and Goku beats 6 of them. He'd then be the overall stronger hero but there lies the problem.

1. Nobody is gonna do the math on all those fights.

2. Theres just gonna be more and more versions of Superman created as the years go by, which means the debate will never end as someone would have to do the math on those versions as well.

At this point, its just pointless to debate it especially when you see what it does to people. I really wish that debate would die already.

Goku has not shown anywhere near as big feats as Superman has

Shit. My internet friends and myself make jokes of it. We create more Gokus! Anime Goku, Manga Goku, Toei Goku, Video Game Goku, Fanboy Goku, Crossover Goku, and even "What If" Goku  . But honestly there are so many Supes that it's just safe to say that they're both Great heroes and would have an epic battle. However if I say "epic battle" then everyone who with Supes would attack me :?

This is true. Back when I used to do major vs. debating I debated Thor vs. Superman (I still say Thor wins... he has magic which Superman is weak against, but that's a completely different story), anyway the Superman fans would keep bringing up feats from Pre-Crisis or some other continuity and say stuff like "if you use Silver Age Thor feats we can use Pre-Crisis Superman feats" even though the Silver Age in Marvel was never retconned like DC... but either way it's a mess.

Cell says he's strong enough to destroy the solar system, and Goku gets far stronger than him, ergo, Goku is definitely as strong as pre-crisis Superman.

I was being facetious, the debate is little more than a fun chat with friends, but it's not a dumb one. They are two fictional characters, and are as strong as whatever the writer wants, except for Hulk. Hulk strongest one there is.

By the way, I think you miss the point of debating if you think it's about winning.

Funny thing is that there are some Hulk fanboys that take that literally. I've seen claims that he could beat people he canonically has no chance against and lost to because "the writers of those issues don't respect the character"

It is fairly debatable (at least for the less ridiculous Supermen). DBO Goku caused ki explosions on par with supernovas (being far away from one small supernova knocked Superman out) and Pure Buu at a suppressed level can fire attacks strong enough to bust small stars in the manga. Anime Goku is also RIDICULOUSLY fast in combat speed going by how it animates ki blasts, and a few instances like Kaio being unable to track the movements of Goku and Freeza while being able to track the saiyan pods.

He's probably referring to the Bardock special. Zarbon was the one who first recommended destroying Planet Vegeta because the saiyans were rapidly growing in strength.
It was actually Beerus disguised as Zarbon #StayWoke
Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.
