Nah, I always just use my thumbs too. I never got the whole palm method, it's really nowhere near as effective as just using your thumbs. It's a good way to break your controllers and look really stupid in front of anyone who's watching you play (and apparently sometimes even hurt yourself), but it doesn't really get the job done anywhere near as well as just rotating the sticks "normally".
Just depends on the player, really. I couldn't even get the attacks halfway charged in Budokai 2 with my thumbs, but I got it maybe 80% of the time with my palms.
