You do realize you're talking about a work of fiction, and that the story's not a foregone conclusion, right? If Toriyama had decided to only have one blonde guy, all the characters would still be as strong or as weak as the plot required them to be.

I am tempted to agree that GT was a big misstep but not for the reasons the OP said. In fact, I think a lot of GT's ideas are great. Maybe they're not so good in execution, though. Goku as a child was a great idea. Goku's at his most enjoyable as a character when he's a child. And I loved the combination of Goku, Trunks, and Pan. And the idea that relying too heavily on the dragonballs causing bad things to happen was a great stroke.

I'm even more tempted to agree that the dub was the worst thing that ever happened to Dragon Ball. I'd rather most people not know about the show than have to constantly wade through all the crap. Maybe if it had just been a niche thing in this country, it might have gotten a decent release years ago.

This thread is about plot points or character progression that people feel hindered the Dragon Ball story or its reception. In other words, it's a discussion about Dragon Ball from a real world perspective. But on a more realistic note, I'm going to go ahead and say music replacement in Funimation's version. Not that I don't enjoy some of the Faulconer Productions material, but it really shouldn't have been there, and went a longer way than nearly any other aspect toward creating two very different tones/fan groups for the show.

I actually sat down and thought about this and I honestly believe that GT was the worst thing that happened to the series. Yes there were terrible dubs, the unnecessary fillers, the sometimes poor animation quality, the angular sharp look that came in later during the Cell saga, and yes even Broly. But none of these thing were as bad 64 episode series that almost ruined the series for me.

I don't even hate GT like most DB fans do. After watching the it for a second time I realized it wasn't as bad as I remembered and I actually enjoyed it a lot more. This was already mentioned but the show had a lot of great and wonderful ideas but it was so poorly executed.

GT wasn't awful but it would have been a hell of lot better for series if it never existed.

What Suupaa Gohan 2 said, pretty much. Though I add that FUNimation could still have gotten as good as they are today without DBZ... they'd just have to royally screw over a different series. It's just a shame that Dragon Ball had to be the sacrificial lamb for them to get where they are, so to speak.

For me it's either filler or DBE. I'd go with filler for #1 though and here's why: Filler turns off a lot of people. I nagged my friend to watch it in grade school and when he finally caved... Princess. Fucking. Snake. He never let me live it down. Not to mention that dragging out things, which I consider filler as well, has given the series the notoriety of "5 episode staring contests".

The worst thing that happened to Dragon Ball for me also was that boring Wedding Dress filler at the end of Dragon Ball. It was the most boring filler I have ever seen (maybe even more boring than the Fake Namek filler).
