Re: Favorite Pre-BoG Movie?
1. Movie 8 - Despite Broly's far fetched reason for hating Goku and the nonsensical ending, I'd say this movie balances out plot and action to near perfection.
2. Movie 5 - Pure, heart pounding action toppled with exceptional pacing. Cooler is a great villain.
3. Movie 13 - Great character development for Trunks and Tapion. Although Goku killing Hirudegarn felt unfitting.
4. Movie 6 - This movie had the best Goku & Vegeta team action. I also love how Cooler and the Big Gete Star's capabilities were gradually unveiled over the course of the movie.
5. Movie 3 - I'll admit at first I didn't like this film, but it truly was the last film dedicated to the pre-SSJ era, and a great one at that. Turles was a great parallel to Goku and the Tree of Might was an amazing concept. This film would've been ranked higher if the rest of the Z-fighters did more.

Re: Favorite Pre-BoG Movie?
Movies 1, 5, 8, 9, 12, and 13 are my favorite, pre-BOG. Out of those, my most favorite would be movie 13. As someone said above, it felt the most "movie-like" of them all.

BoG sucks. Most of pre BoG was better. But I'll go with Bojack, Dead zone, and First half of metacooler

Re: Favorite Pre-BoG Movie?
My "top five" favorites in order of release:
DBZ Movie 3: Thought Nozawa was really fun as evil Goku, and I'm a big fan of the Ocean Dub version (The uncut one).
DBZ Movie 5: Cooler is easily my favorite movie villain. I liked the idea of a more no-nonsense older brother of Freeza.
DBZ Movie 12: This one's just pure fun. Probably my favorite if I had to pick one (Pre-Battle of Gods).
DBZ Movie 13: I like how this one stands alone and fits into the series timeline with relative ease. It's a neat little story with some mysticism in there and is relatively focused. If it wasn't for the film's namesake at the end, it might be my favorite. Although, at the same time, I find that cop-out ending with the Dragon Fist to be unintentionally hilarious.
DB Movie 4: I think the animation is spectacular and it's nice getting a full-length Dragon Ball feature even if it is just a recap.

Re: Favorite Pre-BoG Movie?
The first 3 DragonBall Z films are my favorites, The Worlds Strongest in particular. The animation in those films is so fluid, it's beautiful. That's not to say the later films don't, I just think the first 3 stand out.
I'm not really keen on BoG, it's good it's just whenever there is any action on the screen the camera moves about all over the place, that makes it a little hard for me to appreciate the animation when I can't see it. Super Saiyan God is another thing I'm not too fond of either. I would have liked it if they did a thing where Goku used Super Saiyan God at first but then defeated Birus as his base or Super Saiyan form with his own strength.

Re: Favorite Pre-BoG Movie?
Hmm...much as I like them, I don't think any of the Dragon Ball movies themselves would be my favorites...so these would all be Z numberings.
Movie 2 - I used to not be crazy about this movie, but nowadays I find that I really enjoy it. The atmosphere is different from most other films, other than a few fighting instances it doesn't seem to have pulled stuff wholesale from the series quite as much, and I love some of the eerie music that I think came from here first.
Movie 5 - Cooler manages to stand out despite pretty much just being movie Freeza, and I find the way that Goku is taken temporarily out of the picture less cumbersome than even some of the manga/series examples.
Movie 8 - Say what you will about what Broly becomes, in his first outting I find him to be pretty enjoyable...or at least the movie around him, at any rate. I actually like Vegeta's break down too, something that I know a lot of people dislike.
Movie 13 - Having a giant kaiju for an opponent was a different way to take things, as was giving us a new 'hero' in a movie instead of just villains (though the 'new hero' thing has gotten pretty tiring in other shonen movies since). I just really like how much this one feels like an actual movie too, not just a 'what if' or 'side story' like some of the other movies kinda feel.

Re: Favorite Pre-BoG Movie?
Just got done watching 2, 3, and 12. 12 is by far my favorite of the movies now even passing BoG but maybe the extended scenes can change that. Now to edit the op

Canon is Jaco, Dragon Ball except for EoZ, Dragon Ball Super anime and manga (both are separate canons)

Re: Favorite Pre-BoG Movie?
Dead Zone, World's Strongest, Lord Slug, Return of Coola, Fusion Reborn and Wrath of the Dragon. And my all-time favourite Dragon Ball Z film is Dead Zone.
There's a couple of 'em I liked and these are the ones.
I've not seen Battle of Gods but I will eventually (waiting for FUNimation to release it on Blu-ray).

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

Re: Favorite Pre-BoG Movie?
I'm still not sure whether Battle of Gods is even my favourite DBZ movie and I've seen it a few times now. Though it is the most interesting as it hints at a whole new era for DBZ. Pre-BOG... Movie 13 is my favourite. Simply because Tapion is a total badass. I would have loved to see more of this character. I mean, I would have quite happily accepted him into the main group in the series! He's awesome. Also as someone previously stated, I enjoyed the time we spent with Tapion and Trunks in particular in this film. Very cool.
Loved Movie 8 too. I enjoy all the DBZ films bar Movie 11, to be honest.

My favorites are movies 1 and 13. I really enjoy 10 and 11, mostly for the comedic factors, and I found Bojack and Tullece movies entertaining as well.
I loved BoG though, so that's an unpopular opinion

Dead Zone, easily. It's been said around here before, but the art has this terrific balance between later Dragon Ball and the early episodes of Z. The choreography is fantastic and almost purely hand to hand, the direction and framing are beautiful, and pacing-wise it gets in and gets out and is a consistent fun ride. Also, Kikuchi's score here is probably his most iconic.

Also, Tenkaichi Gohan is an amazing song. Probably the best movie song ever.

Re: Favorite Pre-BoG Movie?
Movie 12, by far. Its skeleton is much sturdier than the Boo saga it's riffing on, and Janemba's different enough from Boo to be fun.
