The only thing it does is give him more power. I fail to see how that fleshes out the character. You might as well say that a power up would flesh out Broly's character.

So, the sole aspect that we are talking about is Goku's admission that the way he got the power was lame, which is something we could already guess he would think. How does make up at all for the lameless of the way he achieved it?
