"(the H-word)"? They put FUNimation's bullshit into the manga?
Now I'm glad that I didn't buy any of their DBZ manga after the Freeza saga. Until VIZ stops lying to customers and re-releases the DB(Z) manga completely unedited and uncensored they won't get any more of my money.
It wasn't for censoring, He was literally introduced with the name (which we still can't say because of the world's most immature world filter ever...still embarrassing that it exists), but also with "The Wrestler formerly known as Mr. Satan".
They made Mr. Satan a fake name...which we learn is true years after Viz came up with it, lol.
Of course, instead of a Hercule Poirot-influenced name, Toriyama came up with the seemingly normal sounding Mark as a play on Akuma (Ma-Aku).
I still find it amusing that Viz basically came up with Toriyama's idea years before he did (or at least said anything about it).

Yes, it was. They included that line as a nod to the original name, but they obviously went with Hercule due to all the problems of having a good character called Satan, especially in those moments where there are thousands of people calling out "SATAN! SATAN! SATAN!" in the manga.

If it were for censoring, they would never once include it in any shape or form. It wasn't a change in their censorship policy either, because both names were used in his first introduction.
It'd be like in MMPR, Rita comes out saying "I've just summoned Great Satan, but let's call him Lokar, he likes that name better." That wouldn't happen...at all.
And you can argue how "good" Mr. Satan is, especially during the Cell Arc.

It's not up to Viz to decide whether they'll release them or not? Then how does it work?
I really hope we get the Freeza, Cell and Majin Boo arcs too.

Having a note that the guy went by Satan once is risky but can slip by the censors. Having the entire population of Earth calling the name ‘Satan!’ repeatedly would most definitely not.

I think they're referring to the colored volumes being made in Japan. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe the Boo arc in Japan has even been colorized yet let alone the original DB series.

It's all been colorized. The entirety of Dragon Ball (and Neko Majin) has been colorized and released digitally. It just hasn't been determined whether or not the entire colorized manga will get a print release (which might have been what Ryuji meant).
Concerning "Hercule," Viz is going to have to change something. The manga shows "Satan City" in plain English a few times, so Viz will either have to...
1.) Change the name back to Mr. Satan.
2.) Edit the artwork to "Herculopolis" again (UGH).
3.) Do nothing and create an inconsistency.

Yeah. I'm hopeful VIZ will continue releasing the color volumes. There's no reason why they shouldn't sell well. Just gotta wait and see. I think once all of DBZ is released in full-color over in Japan they will eventually announce plans to release the whole series in that format, assuming people buy them.

In their original release of the manga, they say he used to wrestle under the name Mr. Satan, so it really wouldn't create an inconsistency, he'll still have that name associated with him.

There are 2 colored editions in Japan: The
Dragon Ball: Full Color, and the
Dragon Ball: Colored Edition.
Dragon Ball: Full Color is a printed release, and has covered so far from Saiyan to Cell arc, with the Boo arc on the way.
Dragon Ball: Colored Edition is a digital release, and has covered the whole manga.
Viz is currently releasing the
Dragon Ball: Full Color release, which we know that will cover the Z/Kai portion of the series. Unless they get the
Dragon Ball: Colored Edition in their hands, they won't release the DB portion of the series in colored format, except if Shueisha was to release
Dragon Ball: Full Color versions of it in Japan first. Which is possible, since we've been told that they will cover that portion if the other volumes are successful enough.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

'Vegerot' 'Hercule''?
Are there any more examples of Viz losing the plot?

At what point should we all band together and do a write-in campaign asking for them to leave it as Mr. Satan and Vegetto? Since they were making dialogue changes already, why not try and do a couple things right this time? It would honestly not be hard to do a search and replace of instances of the H-Word. And I'm sure the art they will get from Shueisha will have things like "Mr. Satan" written on his car and stuff already. It'd be less work to give us an untampered experience, honestly.

I don't really mind Hercule so much but the Vegerot thing is just so out of left-field. Now in days if they translate a manga based off an anime whose dub changed the names they stick with the dub names--funny that they would go out of the way to create a new name that's different from both the dub and original. =/ Oh well, at least Vegetto is only in part of the story. Not as bad as reading 'Zolo' all the time in One Piece. My mind pretty much just autocorrects it to Zoro at this point though haha.

A petition and then post the results on Viz Media's Facebook to show them we don't want crap names such as Hеrcule and Vegerot?

They're both pretty bad but Hеrcule's worst because it doesn't resemble his original name at all, nor does it feel natural for the fans that know what he's really named.
Whenever I'd watch a dub and they said "Hеrcule" it'd saddened me because they were dumbing down their audience due to the omg-so-sensitive-parents and religious freaks.

Vegetto comes from
Vegeta and Kakaro
tto.
But Viz (and Funimation) turned Kakarotto into Kakarot. Funi just didn't care and left Vegetto as is, but Viz wanted to keep the naming logic.
So
Vegeta and Kaka
rot make Vegerot.
The logic works...it just doesn't sound good.

Imagine for one second that you were Christian... I'm pretty sure you would care (It doesn't matter to me too much because them chanting Satan kinda references the fact that he tricks his followers into following him and everyone thinks he beat Cell but I would still prefer
Hercule)
Canon is Jaco, Dragon Ball except for EoZ, Dragon Ball Super anime and manga (both are separate canons)

I'm Christian and I don't mind. If I avoided everything that had potential blasphemy, then I couldn't be the kind of nerd I am.
Hell, Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger (what MMPR Season 1 got its footage from) had their Dinosaur Mechs, the Guardian Beasts, be God. Not a god, God. And not New Testament God, classic smitin' Old Testament God.
Also, their final foe was Dai Satan (Great Satan).
But yeah, I can understand why other people might be offended, but for Mr. Satan, he's just a normal guy with an odd name (ironically, Viz's use of it being a Stage Name is kinda what Toriyama ended up doing, naming him Mark).

This is essentially my reaction to reading or hearing '
Hercule' at any point.
I just find it baffling as to how anyone could find it offensive. He's portrayed as a con or a bumbling idiot for almost the entire series. It's not exactly the most sympathetic look at a character called 'Satan'.
If you really wanted to read into it, you could very easily use
xmysticgohanx's line of thinking:
'because them chanting Satan kinda references the fact that he tricks his followers into following him and everyone thinks he beat Cell'.
That is, if you
really thought it was a big deal.
Personally I find the entire thing absurd and very sad comment on how oversensitive people can be. Yeah, nevermind about that brutal violence or Roshi's perverted nature, we must protect our kids from the word Satan!
