Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
Manga UK releases based on FUNimation seem to be taken from Madman's which have already been converted to PAL and then publish it in UK (with a repackaging).
This is pretty much what's going to happen to the Banana Bricks released throughout 2014 in UK.

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
Exactly and if ocean could replicate the work that they had done in dragon ball z movies 1-3, then I think we would have a great kai english dub. I'm not a big fan of Schemmel, Sabat or Colleen so I'd love to see an accurate dub with ocean doing fantastic voice-work.dbboxkaifan wrote:An accurate dub doesn't always mean it's better, let's say Big Green Dub / Speedy Dub was 100% accurate would it be superior to FUNimation's Dragon Ball Kai dub? No. You've also have to think of the voice acting (not everyone likes Schemmel for Goku, Sabat for Vegeta or Colleen for Gohan).Blade wrote:How does that address the need for it? We've already got an accurate English dub.
I'm hoping for Ocean Dub Kai they've hired someone who can resemble Masako/Kelamis or even Kelamis himself as he nailed it on the DBZ Films 1-3.
By the way, on the Big Green Dub's Goku is called "Kakarroto" on Movie #8 which makes it more accurate than FUNimation in this regard but overall it's one big comedic dub film.
It is clear that sometime in Mark Satan's life, he acquired the dragon balls and called upon shenlong to grant him immortality.

Like Blade said, the problem isn't whether or not this dub should exist creatively, it's how in the hell do they plan to recuperate the costs of producing a 100-episode dub, possibly more if the do the Buu arc? FUNimation's version is being sold all over Europe and Canada. Is Ocean Kai going to air on TV? Is that going to be enough? Will it be put on home video? Would they risk confusing people and flooding the market with the exact same show, but different voices?
The people involved in this obviously know something we don't, but nothing about it makes any sense at all on the surface.

The other alternate dubs were produced exclusively for television broadcast. One would assume Kai would follow that. Given this Kai dub exists, it's safe to say that those earlier dubs were financially viable with that strategy.B wrote:Like Blade said, the problem isn't whether or not this dub should exist creatively, it's how in the hell do they plan to recuperate the costs of producing a 100-episode dub, possibly more if the do the Buu arc? "I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.
Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
Both really. Most people can't stand the Ocean dub, I know I myself whenever I've looked up clips it sounds terrible and the people in the comments nearly all agree (I had started with the Ocean dub first because of the Saiyan arc), Krillin in particular is laughably bad.I don't think he's criticising the artistic merit behind the idea or the credentials of the people involved, but instead questioning the need for a second English language dub.
Everyone is familiar with the Funi dub by now. They brought out Kai already and now a lesser group is going to bring out the series again? Why do they think people would buy this? What's the point?

Curious but what is the point of Ocean Kai? Honestly don't see why it needs to be done. Seems pointless. It's like asking Toei to hire other voice actors for a second version of Kai.

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
I don't know if this necessarily means that FUNimation is involved with the Ocean dub per say, but they certainly knew about it, and they knew about it before anyone else. The first talk of an Ocean dub of Kai came from a fan calling himself "Subzero Ice" who posted on Sean Schemmel's Facebook page before any of FUNimation's Kai dub had come out that, while he was sure their dub would be good, he felt the Ocean dub would be good as well. Schemmel then revealed that an Ocean dub was indeed happening, and said the music would be changed. He then asked Subzero Ice how he knew that, considering that that "was supposed to be strictly internal FUNimation info." Perhaps not surprisingly, Subzero Ice didn't clarify how he knows.AjayLikesGaming wrote:Ah, okay, I see what you're getting at. I guess it begs the question of; does Funimation have any part in this dub and, who's financing this?
If it were independent of FUNi then perhaps they're trying to sell it to networks at a cheaper price to undercut FUNi. If FUNi are involved then maybe they're trying to cash in on the large Ocean/Westwood fanbase in the UK and Canada. Super kiddy-friendly for very young focused TV channels and then uncut for the home release so fans like us can get their fix.
Combine that with the fact that Ocean Studios was mentioned in the credits of the Nicktoons-edited FUNimation dub as being responsible for the edits, and I think it might be fair to say that FUNimation is involved somehow. Not a garuntee, though. It could be that they tried to get Kai on TV in Canada, and Toei, who had already sold the rights for Canadian TV broadcast to IPProductions/Ocean Sound, told FUNimation they couldn't have those rights. FUNimation would undoubtedly have been owed an explanation by Toei as to why they couldn't do that, at which point Toei would have told them about the Ocean dub.
It doesn't technically make it more accurate. They just went with a different pronunciation choice. A while back, I asked on Kanzenshuu whether or not Goku's Saiyan name was "Kakarot" or "Kakarotto," and the answer is technically this: it's Kakarot, but Kakarotto still works. Strictly speaking, the "to" on the end is just a quirk of Japanese pronunciation...it's just how the word "Kakarot" sounds when pronounced with a Japanese accent. However, when Goku and Vegeta fuse to become Vegetto, the "to" on the end of that is because of the Japanese-accented pronunciation of "Kakarot." So, "Kakarot" is acceptable if you want the actual name, whereas "Kakarotto" is acceptable if you want to maintain the puns that Toriyama is so very fond of.dbboxkaifan wrote:By the way, on the Big Green Dub's Goku is called "Kakarroto" on Movie #8 which makes it more accurate than FUNimation in this regard but overall it's one big comedic dub film.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
Wow how the hell I missed that. But the thing is. Only I think only two of them sounded valid. I don't see how people opinions such as "Some of us don't think the Funi voice actors capture the attitude" or "Some of us prefer the Ocean voices". As you can easily say the same about ANY DUB for any anime. Doesn't mean they have to make another version for those who prefer these voices. I understand TV broadcasting and Dvds. But I don't understand "preferring" the voices means they have to make another version. If that's the case why don't the people who don't like Nozawa's Goku email Toei and get a new JPN Goku since they will like it. Why don't I call SBS to finish dubbing DBZ because I like their voices better(I don't btw just an example)AjayLikesGaming wrote:Read the posts above. We literally just spoke about it.

If the hand that feeds me decides to give me more choice I'm not gonna ask why... I'm going to take my Ocean dub and run.
Seriously though it's a good thing to have more choice and I don't see the point in arguing against this dub being made. If they want to do it, let them. There's clearly a lot of interest in it judging from this thread alone and whether that's bad or good interest it's an audience none the less.

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
In the sense of the pronounciation it is more faithful to the original Japanese version. I'd personally prefer to hear Kakarroto over Kakarrot any day, but Kakarrot's good too.It doesn't technically make it more accurate.

I didn't like FUNimation's Kai dub voices of Goku, Vegeta and Gohan so if there's any hope that anyone makes a better English Kai dub then it's the Ocean cast.

This is how proper capitalism should be with the free market. We are blessed as fans to have such a choice. Why complain? It's not like a person who doesn't like a certain dub is forced to watch it and because of that, it doesn't warrant for it not to be released; simply do not buy it or watch it.If the hand that feeds me decides to give me more choice I'm not gonna ask why... I'm going to take my Ocean dub and run.

More choice the better, it also helps the competition step up its game: see WWF and WCW vs monopoly of today. Seriously, the more the better.

I can't wait for the new era of Ocean and Funimation fanboys battling it ou--oh wait.
Nah, in all seriousness, I'm pretty hyped. I have zero nostalgic attachment to the Funimation dub so a nice revamped Ocean dub with (hopefully) my childhood cast returning would be very nice.

"We just finished up Kai, in Canada...although...nah I'm not even gonna get into that-"
Heh, THAT speaks volumes.
On that note, actually, I had some contact with Dale Wilson recently while doing some research for something unrelated. While I had him on hand, I asked him if he knew anything about Kai - he said he only knew some vague rumors about it...so that means, if the dub is "done" according to Scott, then either it means they JUST finished the Freeza arc (which is unlikely considering it's now literally been what like 4 years since we first heard about this?) or got all the way done with the Cell arc, in which case Dale wasn't asked to even re-audition for his role, which is unfortunate; he's a cool guy.

That's not a monopoly, WWE has competition from TNA, and substitute forms of entertainment such as MMA. Monopoly also refers to government granted privileges.More choice the better, it also helps the competition step up its game: see WWF and WCW vs monopoly of today. Seriously, the more the better.
The more, the better, as long as there are no rights issues.
Anyway, is this dub actually happening?

It may be a distant second but it's still a competitor, then of course there are substitutes. I wish people stop using the definition of monopoly that was fed to them in grade school.

WWE don't think that(has been reported) . Don't blame them as WWE Superstars and NxT got better ratings.ABED wrote:It may be a distant second but it's still a competitor, then of course there are substitutes. I wish people stop using the definition of monopoly that was fed to them in grade school.
