I wasnt expecting much from this release. I'm happy with my filtered Dbox's until hopefully Toei some day decides to do a proper 1080p release :D

Some people seem to be getting too emotional about FUNi's commercial decisions, but most of the flaws that have been pointed out on this thread are true and they're not just venting their frustration by nitpicking. They are logical and sound criticisms that you don't agree to from your point of view.

Except new problems are coming up as more people actually spend their money on this product. Firs there was the cropping, and then the grain, and then the colors, and then the awkward digital pans, and then the zoomed in Zenkai Power ending footage, and then the tears in the film, and then the shaking. I wouldn't call that "going on and on".

ChibiGoku wrote: So, let me get this straight. You acknowledge that this is an issue, and down play it by saying and telling us to watch it at a "normal viewing distance" and it's "not really noticable", implying that the issue isn't an issue. Regardless if you, personally, cannot see this issue, it's still an issue if it's in the video source. It doesn't matter if your set-up "doesn't show the problems", but if it's there, it's still an issue. Don't try to down play this. Problems like this should be addressed, not ignored, especially how you and several people in this thread seem to be trying to down play this. Quite frankly, I feel that's insulting to people who give a damn about having a quality release.
I wasn't trying to downplay the issue I was just trying to say that it wasn't as bad as AjayLikesGaming was making it out to be(IMO) by saying that there was so much motion and shaking that it made him feel sick. I was just trying to say that the issue is nowhere near that bad and it isn't unwatchable like he was insinuating. I don't think this release is awful although some do and that is there opinion and I respect that. I didn't mean to appear to be down playing issues if that is how I came across than I apologize. I just felt like I needed to defend the release when an issue that it had was being blown out of proportion (in my opinion). Again I'm not a huge fan of this release I've posted in the past that I felt that this release was superior to the orange bricks but inferior to the level sets and dragon boxes and I've also posted multiple screen shots from this release showing it's issues in comparison to the level sets such as inconsistent colors as well as screen shots comparing this release to the raw film scan showing how much detail is lost. I also want to have a quality release and I agree that issues should be shown and discussed not ignored but I felt that the issue this release has with shaky backrounds was being made out to be worse than it really was.(in my opinion)

This is an 80s/90s animated all-ages show that was popular amongst kids. It's not some potent super weapon that might fall into the wrong hands that we have to protect from evil.

Ditto. I worked a bit on my own with some decent results, but nothing is as beautiful as those that Corpsecreate has done. Plus I can never find the drive to get further than a handful of episodes every few months XD

It's not unwatchable. It is horribly distracting though. I mean, take a look at this fairly lengthy example. The shaking is all over the place, it's horrible. I couldn't sit and watch that for any length of time.

I feel like the gif's shaky frame rate lessens the effect, if anything.

EDIT: By shaking I mean the grain trying to squeeze through their DNR. The actual frame jitter is okay.

I think that the widescreen version of Kai is worse when it comes to jitter. *Edit: Ah, now I get it.

Wow! Is it like that for most of the 39 episodes? Also I would like to know, is the dub for this set the same one they used for the OB?

Yup every episode. The gif adds noise due to the way it compresses so imagine this but totally devoid of grain or noise. Pay attention to the dark shades of his skin as well as the grass.

This is from episode 36. It is absolutely persistent throughout the set.

Think I'll be naming this the 'wibble wobble' set.

They must have applied a filter that detects boundaries between certain ranges of colors and averages each range. Boundaries finely waggle frame by frame because of film grain, so that kind of jarring "shaking" occurs as a side effect.

The way I see it, the OBs had worse flaws, but these new sets have more flaws.

With a lot of the simpler scenes - interiors, close ups and pretty much anything lacking a lot of detail - things don't look nearly as bad as my examples.

As soon as you're outside and you've got mountains and rockery and all the iconic backgrounds DBZ is known for, it sticks out like a sore thumb.

I don't really regret my purchase, I guess. Having the Japanese audio sound so nice certainly dampens the blow significantly and I do kinda hope they continue these sets just so I can take that audio and make myself a 'perfect' copy with colour corrected Dbox footage.

From what I've seen, the only instance of extensive grain removal on 16mm film that doesn't bother me at all is the HD remaster of kinescoped early Taiga dramas.

The FYE in the Annapolis Mall has Season One Blu-Ray. The cover has grown on me, but I still won't buy it even at $25.

The new sets also have more advantages such as selective cropping, no disappearing lines, better audio, and absence of dirt and scratch marks that are prevalent on the orange bricks. The selective cropping alone makes this release better than the orange bricks IMO but to each his own.

The BD sets may not have missing lines, but there is some missing detail due to the bleaching. You think they would have learned after the OB sets. Dont know why Funi thinks we sould keep paying them for this crap (I'm being a little harsh) but still they've been making lots of money off of DBZ fans since the 90s :lolno:

Look how on the level set and Dbox set you can see all 5 spaces inbetween the beems. On the BD (blu ray) set all you can see is 3 spaces.

It's kinda weird how the casual edition DBZ Season BDs gets the better Japanese audio track while the Level BDs just got thrown it in, still, although it's muffled it's better than what's out there.

I wish FUNimation would revive the Level BDs even if that means the newer ones being inferior to the originals.

I can see all 5 lines on the blu ray must be a youtube issue http://imageshack.com/a/img822/6152/3bqa.png.
No, that's a different frame. The screen is flashing between dark and light rapidly. But even on the other two film sources, you can see all of the detail in the "bright" frames. Here it's all washed out. Not to mention that grain artifacting looks ATROCIOUS.
