What's with Trunks' hair? It never looks like that when he's a normal Super Saiyan, and he sure as hell ain't grade 3 or whatever it's called. Looks like he's sporting a spiky 'fro.

Really don't like any of this art.

Yeah they couldn't have screwed the Orange Bricks up more if they tried. I hated the covers for them and some of them seemed so out of place. I also hated how you had to take the slip covers off each release to show the Dragon. I'm still curious though why Funimation cropped the ending a little more than the OB's? Doesn't really make sense? :P I'm glad the Intro is fixed...kinda. lol At-least I can see the tops of characters heads lol

Edit - ^ I think it's just the artwork because it looks pretty similar to this(If you're talking about the picture of the right> not the left<)
Image
I'm meaning the hair stile not the actual art lol

The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

This artwork is really cool. I really like the characters that were chosen. Piccolo vs #17 was a great choice for season 5, and it's great that #18 is in the foreground too. I also think it was a good decision to reserve Cell for season 6 rather than show his perfect form in season 5 like the OBs did.

That art is terrible!!! Piccolo's all skiny, Gohan and vegeta's heads are massive, not to mention the complete lack of Mr. Satan on the art!!
Freeza being cut in half with Trunks in the foreground fighting 18 while having Kuririn sneak up in the next pic...the heck is going on!?!?!
It's like they were going for continuity but couldn't decide what.
Especially terrible is #20 looking like he's reaching out for Vegeta whose flying where exactly and from what!?! it looks as if Vegeta pwned Freeza and is flying off
Also love the Tenshinhan fan service where he took on all those Cell Juniors by himself...oh wait...speaking of which, ok so they include Ten, but not Yamcha!?!? What the heck!?

The worse part is how the artist left out the most important character, defeater of Cell, vanquisher of Boo, the greatest savior the Earth has and will ever know...the one and only Mr. SATAN!?!?!

I mean it really wouldn't have been that hard:

Image

it still retains the rest of the terrible art! Yay!

Or the artist could have just axed the awful Piccolo and 17:

Image
much much better

The whole new cover art reeks worse than the last debacle...which I never thought possible given this:

I hope you aren't being serious Kakarot. Yes, the weird drawing of Freeza's hand is bad, but "debacle" is strong term for something so minor. I think you are making mountains out of molehills. The artwork looks teriffic.

In your opinion.

To me, it all looks like a horribly proportioned, awkward and chubby mess with lots of layout and posing issues. I'm not a very good artist, and I feel like I could do better.

Lol ABED, when we do finally agree on something I'm going to pop some champagne! :D you in?
In all seriousness, yeah I am being over dramatic in my language I thought it sounded funnier that way, but truth be known I don't really care.

I do, however, indeed find the art absolutely awful. None of the character looks right in the face, and their overall presentation is just misdrawn. Moreover, the new release left out one of my personal favorites Mr. Satan! That's terrible to me because and he has an integral role in the series much more so than #19. Moreover, this release has Daisuke Gōri in it, seemed like a perfect opportunity to remember his incredible gift. So, yes, debacle works for me, but a less harsh synonym is fine too.

Yeah, in some cases the posing does look pretty weird, and the continuity is broken, but this is cover art. Characters kind of do need to be showing their faces, and the scene depicted doesn't to be a recreation of one from the series, more something representative of the series in general.

I agree about Mr Satan though. Why don't they just have a different Mr Satan image on every cover, with other characters in the background?

While I don't think it's "terrific" I do think the artwork is very good. Although I think some people are being a bit too harsh.

That is some Grade-A nitpicking.

Nitpicking? I'm... not sure how to take that. It's simply not how the armor is designed.

It's also just one of many issues I have with that art. When has Trunks' hair ever looked like that outside of "grade 3" or "Ultra Super Saiyan" or whatever? Plus, he looks chubby and too shiny.

You make it sound as if I am complaining for the sake of complaining, when I assure I am definitely not. I appreciate good art, and aspire to be a good artist myself some day, but I honestly think this stuff is pretty bad. Art is subjective, and it's my opinion that it is not good artwork.

Anyways, I took a shot at correcting the Trunks image:

Image

I rushed it, but I think I improved the proportions and style overall. I don't see why the art style can't resemble this more.

(Original for comparison:)
Image

The face was too chubby, the mouth was off center (which is a stylistic choice, not not one I associate with Dragon Ball), the torso had no muscle definition, making him look chubby, and the hips were too wide and long. Of course, the hair and armor are way off too (though I think my hair is still slightly off).

For what it's worth, I've had a huge problem with the way Trunks' hair has been drawn over the last many years, myself. It's always too long or too short when they do him up as a Super Saiyan. I think. I guess. I can't articulate what I mean well enough. It's like... where the bowl cut underneath is and where the hair comes up from there doesn't separate / go out away from itself far enough.

I dunno. I can't draw stick figures.

I get what you mean, I also have problems with Super Saiyan Trunks' hair.
