Just out of curiosity, how would people react if a man voiced Bulma or something.

Depends how it was played. If this male performer can pull off Bulma's personality without sounding absurd then I see no issues.

That's because the majority of those characters are young male characters. The issue with Goku stems from his adult form still having that same voice, which is a lot more uncommon. Even in Japan, it's not super common.

As for the question of a male playing Bulma...I dunno. I agree on the one hand that if it was well played, then I might be okay with it...but then I think of Junpei Takiguchi's Baba, which I just...cannot take seriously. So it's a tough call for me.

Orochimaru and Kurama are voiced by females in the Japanese version of their shows. I dont think it's uncommon.

Maybe uncommon is a bad choice of words (er, word? Whatever) on my part, cuz I know Himura Kenshin is also played by a woman. It's still outside the norm though, it's nowhere near as standard for an adult male character, unless they are considered particularly feminine to begin with (something all of these examples have that Goku doesn't) to have that kind of voice.

Again, not complaining, I love Nozawa's work, but I can also see why it's so jarring for fans just now checking out the Japanese version.

It would depend on the voice.

Really? I absolutely love that voice. It is so perfect for that character and a great example of how that can be pulled off effectively and seamlessly. But, yeah, to answer the question, it would depend on how well it was done. To use an example that I think is great and also similar to Takiguchi's Uranai Baba, but an American example, Brad Bird KNOCKS IT OUT OF THE PARK as Edna Mode from The Incredibles.

Yeah, I'm serious. I dunno what it is, but I just...don't care for the voice he used for Baba. It's just so jarring, in a way even more so than Nozawa's Goku, which I grew to not only be used to but love, ever was to me. Then again, I don't really care for Mayumi Tanaka's Baba either...outside of the fact that it's Tanaka, and she's awesome. For Baba, I always hear Linda Young in my head, but the goofier voice she did rather than the raspier tone that was closer to Freeza. I forget which one she used in Dragon Ball versus Z, though.

Good example with Edna though. I always forget that that's actually a guy's voice. I'm pretty sure the slug-monster receptionist lady in Monsters Inc. is also a man, but don't quote me on that.

Oh. I had no idea that Adult Goku was voiced by a woman in the Jap version. I hated the voice, but I didn't think it was a female.

Yup, the same woman who played him as a kid, Masako Nozawa. She also plays all ages of Gohan and Goten, as well as Bardock and Turles (and for some non-DBZ roles, she's Guilmon/the narrator for Digimon Tamers, and Dr. Kureha in One Piece). She can certainly take some getting used to, but I love her work nowadays.

I would be lying if I said that I didn't find her adult Goku jarring at first, but she grew on me over time. I'm not a big fan of her Bardock however.

For me it's her Future Gohan that's the most unfitting. I don't know if it's just how grim-serious what we get of that character had to be, or if she hadn't quite figured out how to differentiate an older Gohan voice from what she did with Goku yet, but it just doesn't sound like Gohan to me. It sounds like her Goku. And this is after getting to a point where I can see somewhat the differences between her various voices for the characters.

Whatever it is that doesn't sit well with me there though, it apparently gets figured out by the time of the Boo arc, cuz I'm fine with her there.

Update: Just realized I should probably specify more on the 'Future Gohan sounds like Goku' thing. Obviously it sounds nothing like Goku when he's being all goofy, and hickish, but Future Gohan is pretty much Goku when he's in serious battle mode, to me. That's what I meant.

Honestly never thought Goku voice sounded like a girl. He sounded like neither genders. It sounded like GOKU. Kid Goku sounded like a girl. But not Adult Goku. The pitch(Besides powering up screams or Kamehameha) sounds much different.

Not a big fan of Masako Nozawa, but I do like her screams though, obviously not as good as how Schemmel does them, but good nonetheless.

To be honest, I don't mind her voices for Goku, Gohan or Goten, but did she really have to voice Bardock too? Unlike Goku, who's voice represents the fact he never really grew up and thus fitting, Nozawa's Bardock's voice doesn't at all fit the war-veteran-esque look he has.
