"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.

Guys, I think we're in 2007 again.

Damn thats sucks. So rather than just center cropping it they're going to try to keep most things in frame similar to the way Kai was done when it aired on tv in japan.

This is an 80s/90s animated all-ages show that was popular amongst kids. It's not some potent super weapon that might fall into the wrong hands that we have to protect from evil.

So this is happening.

I think I can live with that sort of cropping. Yeah, it's not the best case scenario, but it sounds like this is indeed a new remaster and not just the orange bricks.

All is lost. I wish I had waited to see this before I just did the order. Unless they are just screwing with our heads I'll just wait to cancel it. I really wanted 4:3 and a lot of others did. If it's because of that survey, the fans of the show who don't care about aspect ratio's ruined it for us. Thanks guys. Thanks.

Wait you know what. if I just read the it's not just center cropping, so maybe this won't be as bad. As long as everyones face is in place when they're talking and the top of their head isn't chopped off leaving mouths, or mouths being covered, so maybe this won't be as bad.

I think I got all of my anger about this out back in 2007 or so. Now, I just kind of feel like  now.

I just find it weird. It's like, first the Rock the Dragon sets, then this? Like, FUNimation is super weird with Dragon Ball. I'd like a Dragon Box movies box set already, but I don't think that's happening, which is the worst. I wish FUNimation would start not fucking up. It's probably too late for them to change this, but I wish it wasn't.

Well since these are 16x9 I will be sticking with my Dragon Boxes. No need in getting another release of Z as I have my perfect release of Z already.

I'm absolutely not touching any Funimation DBZ products, other than Kai, until we get a proper release. So this is a definite no-no.

While I hope the cropping is fixed..I'm gonna skip this one. Why not crop kai? That's how it was in Japan on tv? It's more of a reasonable excuse since that is the "updated" z. I'd probably not care as much if we didn't have the level sets.

Heck, look at 1/2 of the "NOT HD 4:3" reviews on amazon of the level sets...enough said...

I'll just hope I can get the rest of the Dragon Boxes now :D

I personally am sick of them releasing Z so many times since I already have the series in proper format (Dragon Box). But, that is unfortunate for those who were hoping for a proper aspect ratio. They should've stuck with the Level Sets, those had potential.

I just wish FUNimation would release the newer works, I don't need to buy Z again, and again, and again.

Is a this a fucking joke?!

If this is actually the case then I'm done. That's it, no more ounce of faith left in Funimation.

You know what's weird? They released those Yu Yu Hakusho Blu-rays like almost 3 years ago, despite those actually being from the company that made the show, FUNi didn't fuck with them at all. YYH was made during Z's run in Japan, so I don't get why FUNi decides to fuck with Z so much. It's weird because it's literally just Dragon Ball they mess with. Most of the time it's Z, too. Like, Dragon Ball or GT have not been messed with nearly as much as Z has. It's so weird I question why FUNimation has to do this.

They're most likely doing this as a result of the survey. Funimation is going to release the version of the show that sells the most they are a business after all. Apparently people want the show to be 16x9. At least they're not just center cropping it like the orange bricks. I'm still gonna pick up the first season to see how it looks compared to my level sets if I'm satisfied I'll continue to buy them if not then then I won't.

I just don't understand what absolute moron is making these decisions. Was this the result of the survey and if so, who are the brain dead idiots who don't understand the basic concept of not fucking with an aspect ratio?!

The entire point of Blu-Ray is, besides clarity, to view the work as it was originally intended and made. Nobody crops The Wizard of Oz or Metropolis on Blu-Ray, nobody is cropping Snow White or Cinderella either. So what makes them think this is a smart decision?

Is the majority of the fan base that stupid or is this just Funimation's doing?

They mention pan and scan - this would involve someone going through every episode and designating a suitable 16:9 crop. Wasn't the reason the Level Sets were cancelled down to the process taking so long?
Surely this just adds MORE time to what was already being done. The scanning and processing methods can't have changed drastically, surely? So what's the reasoning behind this?

Do they think the success of the Orange Bricks is down to the presentation and thus making an HD version of them is the way to make money?

Honestly, I'm upset, annoyed and confused. It is nearly 2014, there is no excuse for this type of bullshit.

^This! FFS Funimation, why is it always one step forward and two back when it comes to Dragon Ball (especially Z) but you treat all the other anime with respect?

Fuck it, I am now 100% convinced that Funimation is COMPLETELY incapable of getting ANYTHING right with the Dragon Ball franchise unless someone else does the work for them, e.g. the Dragon Boxes. And even then they can't get that right. We've been waiting on the DBox Movies for almost 4 years!

Looking at that running time: 925 minutes. That's 37 episodes. Weird place to end "Season 1". And once again Funimation THERE ARE NO SEASONS IN ANIME!! *sigh*

That's debatable, Toei's Hokuto no Ken Blu-rays look pretty bad to me, but this could mostly be Pony Canyon's fault. If Toei does a remaster using their likely much better film sources and Pony Canyon doesn't make the picture look so soft and mushy from DVNR, their version of the series could look good. As great as the Level Sets look, that remaster was way overkill and a more conservative approach that's at least released in it's entirety would ultimately be more effective.
This is the episode of when Gokuh enrages himself after Freezer talk shit about Kuririn
