Dragonball Kai Music Thread

Post by SSj_Rambo » Fri Mar 13, 2009 1:36 am

Here's a place for a discussion/analysis of the music for the new series Dragonball Kai, particularly the background music (BGM). I'll try to keep it as up-to-date as possible, and add new info after each episode premieres.

I'll be trying to catalogue each piece of music that is used in relation to the Japanese dub of Dragonball Kai... including the commercials and such. Now as far as we know, the entire music score will be composed by the DB VGM master, Kenji Yamamoto, but if we learn that any certain piece is accredited to anyone else, I will make note of it... but I might need some help with that. I know this is a pretty big undertaking, so any help would be much appreciated!!

KEY: The info in red next to each piece lets you know what scene it was played in.

NOTE: bkev and kei17 have found a similarity between DBK_BGM_012 and one of Yamamoto's earlier pieces that was used in the video game Budokai. kei17 was kind enough to find the exact piece and upload it for our hearing pleasure.

:!: PS: If anyone knows of a better numbering/categorizing system, I'm welcome to suggestions!

I'm pretty sure the episodes will be on youtube either a couple of hours after the episode is finish or at the most a few days since the episodes will be once a week. Then we can watch the episode in high quality.

Sweet, I was worrying about whether or not I'd have to take care of this myself.
If the episodes do wind up on YouTube (since I have to view recordings instead of real-time episodes), I hope to contribute.
BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.

I sure hope Yamamoto composes an arrangement from his Trunks theme (DB: Final Bout OST) when that arc starts.

Shit, if we get variations on his Trunks and Vegeta themes (and so on and so forth)...

That'll pretty much legitimize my thoughts of his soundtrack as a secondary soundtrack to the series :P.

With Kai airing in exactly 24 hours, I think it's time I bring this thread back up and finalize the documentation of the BGM for the trailers and promos... which happens to be only one song cut to different lengths. :P

Can't wait for tomorrow!

Well put. And I agree with you 100%. He'll probably at least be doing a variation of the opening theme, hopefully. And if we're lucky, some battle themes (i.e. in various DB video games). I would cream my pants instantly. 8)

Alright, I got all of the BGM used in the first episode and all four commercials documented!! I'm pretty confident I got 'em all, but this is the first time I've done this, so if anyone else wants to double check for me that'd be great. :)

Excellent work, Rambo! If I might make a suggestion, find a way to rip the music from the episode and listen to it many times over, to get yourself acquainted with it.

In the meantime, I'm going to crawl into a dark corner now. :o It scares the living daylights out of me that people seem to be liking Yamamoto's score better than Kikuchi's.

Thank you! Excellent work with finishing up the rough draft of your GT BGM documentation!! Yeah, I've been trying to figure out how I should go about ripping what I can of these pieces from the episodes... any help with that from anyone would be much appreciated!! :D

Don't worry, Yamamoto has a long way to go before he wins me over; but if he keeps giving us pieces like the guitar one he did for the Raditz/Piccolo confrontation (DBK_BGM_006), the gap will definitely shrink.

I have few questions that have probably been answered before but...

Where can I find the lyrics for Dragon Soul?
and
What is the difference between the Dragon Ball Kai Intro Theme: Dragon Soul [Regular Edition] vs. Dragon Ball Kai Intro Theme: Dragon Soul [Limited Edition] ?
Gohan: "You're a Buddhist." Kuririn: "A hungry Buddhist!"

The lyrics were translated on this page of the first episode's page.

Thanks! I just wanted Dragon Soul, and I can look to the Daizex Lyrics for other songs later.

I think the scene where Raditz hits Krillin features recycled music from Budokai - and if it's not recycled, its at least VERY similar to a piece from the games.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
I actually like the new music for Kai better than the original, Shunsuke Kikuchi score. Of course, I've never been a huge Kikuchi fan to begin with, but this new stuff is just amazing.
