In Progress ~ Love Triangle ~

Post by ToshiMustgrind » Fri May 08, 2009 2:49 am

Hey guys!
Thought I would go ahead and post something which is actually in progress (and for me to also test the colors on another monitor since my work monitor is a bright too bright even adjusting it to the lowest settings)
Looks like there are a few colors I need to edit...

Image

So I started this drawing last weekend or two ago when I was hanging out at Barns and Noble drawing with a friend of mine who has decided she is gonna cosplay Bulma at an upcoming con.
I was in a sort of spot as to what to draw next so she suggested "Draw Afro Bulma!" (this is the first version of Bulma out of about 3 of 4 total she wants to cosplay). I found the manga volume where Trunks, Mecha Freeza and King Cold land and I drew Bulma straight out of one of Toriyama's panels.
She loved it!
So to surprise her I went ahead, found a panel of Vegeta and drew him as well (her BF is supposed to cosplay this version of Vegeta) and she was happy to see that!
To finish it off, I had to add in Yamcha, my favourite character and the version I am cosplaying with them, to the shot. I found a panel with him in in and referenced it again and added in an unreferenced Puar over his shoulder.

With that done I inked the whole drawing and once I got home I scanned it and started to work on it.

To do something different from what I normally do, I wanted to actually paint in a background like I have seen instructed in my Advanced Photoshop magazine.
Since I was watching it at the time; I paused a scene in Season 2 (where Vegeta escaped Freeza's ship with the Dragonballs and Zarbon is searching for him) and painted in what I saw and carefully trying to eyeball the colors and shapes.

This image has been a bit of endeviour for me thus far. I haven't tried to be this ambitious with any image yet (not even ones I have done for shirts for bands!).

In the end I think I subconsciously am hinting towards what happens between these three just by expressions and where they all are looking.

THIS IS STILL IN PROGRESS
You are seeing most of Bulma's flat colors along with some shadows being blended and a few other things that are being edited right now (such as the odd green on Yamcha's shirt).
Overall I am pretty happy with this.
I'll post more later,

I wanted to get feedback from you folks as I near completing this (right now working on Bulma's fro shadows... aahhh!)

Well, if you're looking for feedback I'll make a note hon. The faces of the characters seem scrunched in very close to the center. If the eyes were a little smaller for that head size and on the same level (particularly in Bulma and Yamcha you can see it- the bottom parts of the eyes are on very different heights), it'd be good. I like your coloring and the rest of the image though, it's just that the eyes are off. The shading on Veg's skin in particular is nice, like those long arcs he has on his forehead. I also actually like the green in Yam's shirt, it's like reflections from the sky and the water.

A. ChiChi
B. Piccolo
C. Goku
D. Bulma[/quote]

Thanks!
Ya I meant for some green on the characters as a reflection of there environment but the shading on Yamcha's just looks a 'lil messy I think, like a last minute slap-together

So much stuff going on I havn't really been able to progress to much farther... althouh by now I'm finishing the dark shadows on Bulma's hair and I'm still gonna do some lighter colors as well as apply the shadows and shades to her clothing :)

Bulma's hair is just too blue. Lighten it a bit, and throw some green or violet in there.
