VegettoEX, Meri, Julian, and Jeff do a mid-month "Review of Awesomeness" and compare the "TRUNKS: THE STORY" manga chapter with the second DBZ TV special, along with all the standard analysis you've come to expect. Maybe just me, but the episode isn't showing up in iTunes. I've refreshed a couple of times, and still nothin.

If you're using iTunes, why don't you just subscribe to the show...? Subscriptions are totally independent of when iTunes decides to update its cache on which individual episodes are available for each show. Whenever you set iTunes to download new episodes (I have mine check every hour), it'll just automatically grab what's in the feed... and the episode is definitely available in the feed. You can also manually right-click a show name and select "Update Podcast" for it to check the feed again and grab anything that's new.

It's Sunday, which means tomorrow will be Monday. Which means the ton of homework for tomorrow has to be done today. And I still haven't listened to episode 212, 213 and the Cross Epoch. The sun is shining softly, the sky is as blue as ever....who am I kidding. I take my laptop and find myself a nice spot in the backyard. Hit the space button and enjoy a peacefull evening with DBZ (and OncPiece) podcasts.
EDIT
By the way, the pic showing currently on the homepage of Trunks and the destoyed city in the background is really good.

When talking about human villians, you didn't really mention Tao Pai Pai or Tsuru-sennin.
I can't believe that Trunks side-story podcast was two years ago.

When Mike was talking about wishing Toriyama had done more character history pieces like the Trunks thing, I've always thought the godfather of all DB backstories that never happened would have been something detailing how the Ginyu Special Corps formed and what made them so bad ass before they were killed on Namek.
Great podcast topic though. Trunks has always been one of my favorite characters.

Great podcast. And damn, that audio clip really gave me chills. I have to go back to the dub version of that scene and see how it was done...
And just to add to the stuff about the performance and just to provide an observation from a different side, Eric Vale also did the same thing with Trunks' voice in the dub of History Of Trunks, with 13 year old Trunks sounding more high-pitched, while 17 year old Trunks later on is deeper. Although his voice for GT Trunks is the same, just less, "angsty," I guess.
And one thing I thought was funny was how Trunks was all badass when he killed Frieza, even though just days before he was getting his ass handed to him by the Androids and looked like a bit of a punk.

Hehe, he was probably a bit pissed off and needed to take his aggression out on somebody.

You seem to be enjoying your PokéWalker. I still only got it in Japanese.
But, anyways, this episode really makes me want to re-watch it, but, don't have the DVD.

Trunks was never really a favorite character of mine, though I did like the elements he brought to the story.
The TV special was pretty cool, though I felt some of the fighting got a little repetitive. I actually bought the Funimation VHS release of this when it first came out, so the first time I watched it was with the English dub and those songs. I actually don't mind those songs in themselves, except that they clearly don't belong in the special. Well, the rap song was just bad. I'm glad I saw the special again in Japanese because I liked it a lot more in Japanese.
I think if they did another side story project, I'd like to see one about the Freeza family, or maybe grandpa Gohan and Gyuumao during their training under Kamesennin. Or maybe Kuririn's younger years in the temple. Or the years of terror with Buu menacing the universe under the control of Bibidi. Or...
Gaaaagggh, so many potential stories!

Strangely enough, I just so happened to by the steelbook a few months ago for the Bardock Special (a few weeks after the Abridged)

Haha! Perfect timing guys. I just bought the steel case(much like Kuhan) last week so I was really excited to see this. The steel case was the first time I got to experience the subs and the Dub with the original Japanese music. I have to say watching both was like watching a completely different movie, the original music does a great job setting up the mood of the special. I can't tell you how great it was to see the weird rap(if you can call it that) influenced opener disappear, though I really do miss Dream Theater.
As far as the podcast goes, I agree with Mike where he says the Trunk's Super Saiyan transformation was the best in the series. I also have to agree with the poorly placed eye catcher right afterwords, in fact this special's eye catchers were all awkwardly placed.
I also have to agree with the fact that the original chapter in vol 32 was way to short, it really felt rushed.

Trunks' timeline reminds me of Kyle Reese's timeline from Terminator. Think about it. A world terrorized by super powerful machines. A young angst ridden boy sent to the future to try to fix things.
It's certainly not the first Terminator allusion in Dragon Ball. Major Metalitron or Full Metal Jacket or whatever the hell his real name is.

I always thought Trunks looked a lot like Jon Connors.
When did the cell saga debut in Japan, because T2 came out around 1992 and that sounds like it would line up.

Trunks first appeared in Weekly Jump in July, 1991.

We had
a thread about all the Terminator similarities a few months back. Terminator 2 was also first released in July 1991, so...

The Manga chapter almost seems like it was designed to have as little action as possible, Heehee...
I dunno, it seems like the manga chapter was setting up Gohan and Trunks' fate, more like a flashback; it starting with Gohan's arm missing kinda seems like it's supposed to show how much has been lost and such.
The TV special seems more like it's supposed to be an almost-movie of sorts, so it fills in everything a lot better...
I wonder if the manga chapter isn't better read with the surrounding series and not on its own? The TV special, on the other hand, was designed to stand alone (connection to the rest of the series aside.
).
Meri works for RFB&D?
... I don't like RFB&D.
*Considers ranting good-naturedly, but would rather not sound like a dick* XD

As mentioned in the episode, not much could have been discussed about the manga chapter alone, so it makes complete sense to bring the special into things. The only thing I really have to say about it is that the weird fast-forwarding to later times over the span of only a few pages made for a strange read. I mean, I'm used to it in other manga like 20th Century Boys, but to have it in DB was just a bit off. I always thought the bit where the older Trunks is about to take off to fight the Androids, only to have Toriyama jump right to when he's in the hospital came off as more comical than anything else (imagine a DB Abridged style whooshing sound effect as a transition between the two scenes, if you will).
Also, gotta agree that if Toei (at least the Toei of that time) had more opportunities to flesh out what was only touched on in the manga, it would have led to more awesome stuff like the Bardock and Trunks Specials. As for the dub of The Trunks Special, as strange as that whole thing was, I watched it back when I was new to the series, so it holds a place in my fandom in that sense. I know I'd always get creeped out by 17 and 18's lines "we're in the cemetery... your cemetery" when they're hiding from Trunks in the final fight. Though much more bad outweighs the good. I was actually pretty surprised knowing Julian was even aware of the "dead baby" song they played in the closing credits.
Awesome podcast (with awesome-er outtakes); keep up the good work
