DB or DBZ? Which took the higher priority?

I have question for those who were introduced to the series via Toonami's broadcast of FUNimation's dub. When Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z ran together, which one was higher up on the list of things to watch and why? Before I share my thoughts, I'd like to know yours.
