DBZ Malaysian English Dub: Toei's Official English Scripts?

As you can tell from these clips, the scripts are terrible. Their English is absolutely poor (like mine lol). I thought this was a fault of the staff made this dub, but an idea came into my head. This can be the official English translation by Toei Animation of that time. When I was searching for the information this dub, I found that Toei's official site was using the same English titles as this dub and the so-called Big Green dub.

The Swedish TV translation was made by Olav F. Andersen, who also wrote new Swedish lyrics for the opening and ending songs, and doubled as a voice actor. He translated the dialogue from English-language scripts that were provided by Toei; he has later remarked that the scripts' linguistic quality was "atrocious."

Sweden got Sailor Moon in 1996. Toei's translation was that bad at that time, so the same thing could happen with Dragon Ball. In that case, maybe the terrible scripts of Malaysian English dub were provided by Toei themselves. This may be also the reason why the scripts of the first ocean dub were awful.

Interesting. I usually call these the "Speedy" dubs because back when I would buy them on VCD, there was a "Speedy" logo on it. I still have no idea if that was the company that dubbed them or just the distributor.

Huh, I noticed that Toei page kei17 linked to has descriptions for each movie... with some of them using dub terms like "King Kai" and "Eternal Dragon." Between this and both the FUNimation and Harmony Gold dubs using "Flying Nimbus" for Kinto'un, I'm beginning to suspect Toei was behind a lot of the random name changes all along. o_O

Correct. Among issues caused by those script was his mistaking Zoisite for a woman, and some poorly translated dialogue from episode 1 leading him to think "Morga" was the name of the queen Jadeite was addressing, rather than the monster he was talking to her about (Beryl was renamed "Queen Morga" throuh the entire dub as a result).

The dub itself is both quite accurate and relatively well-written, though, so any issues with the English dubs is just as much the fault of the local dub writers.

Looking at the Back Cover scan, the DVD specs reveal that it's only in Japanese with Chinese and English subtitles. I too hoped that there would be an English dub of it, only to be disappointed in the end.

There is not a single Toei logo on that case, and their anime division's logo is a modified Aniplex logo set to read "Anime". Me thinks they aren't legal copies.
