Dragon Ball Kai International Update feel free to contribute

Post by wjbraden » Tue Sep 20, 2011 11:38 pm

Hello there Daizex! I've noticed it's been a little quite around this part of the forums, so I wanted to contribute some news that I've found searching through random DB forums and what not.

For starters, DBZ Kai will air FOR SURE on Cartoon Network Australia starting November 1, 2011. I know it was announced in May last time, but I'm pretty sure its going to air this time (the ep. listing are up on the CN AU website).

The English dub of DBZ Kai is also currently airing across South East Asia and Pakistan as well. On an interesting note, the Thai feed of Cartoon Network is airing an exclusive Thai-Dub! Here's the dubbed opening: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdDnuZEW ... er&list=UL and ending http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCVWuRfk ... er&list=UL , the user also appears to have epsiodes uploaded, but they are blocked in the US -_-.

DBZ Kai is also started airing yesterday in Catalonia (Spain) on the channel 3XL. Here's the dubbed opening: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9UC7e1E ... er&list=UL and ending: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5Gu6Fk1 ... er&list=UL . If you'll notice both the OP and ED are sped up, most likely due to PAL conversions, which suck. The show will also be airied in Galician (similar to Catalan) in coming weeks on TVG: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMSJUU3YW7g

DBZ Kai is also starting to air new epsiodes on Cartoon Network LA and Brazil, after it took a short hiatus to replace the Yamamoto score.

New epsiodes of the French dub of DBZ Kai are also airing on Nickelodeon France.

On an unrelated note, Dragon Ball GT is also airing dubbed in Hungarian for the first time in Hungary on Animax.

That's it for for now, but if anything DBZ Kai related shows up just post it here!

The Thai dub has FUNi's footage and it still lists Yamamoto as the composer.

No Kai in the Netherlands as of yet. And considering the amount of anime in our country at the moment (except for Pokémon) and the fact that Blue Water Studio holds the DragonBall rights here, I guess it's not coming for a while :(

A recording studio does not hold the rights to Dragon Ball. A mysterious company paying the recording studio does. ;)

Anyways, as I've alluded to elsewhere, no broadcaster in Canada has picked up Kai as of yet.
"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.

I have to laugh at the fact the Galician promo features a Lady Gaga song in there.

Also it seems as if the Catalan dub is possibly based off the English uncut version for the OP/ED as I noticed in Dragon Soul the words gloria & historia (the words for glory & story), and checked Kanzentai's translation of the song and those words aren't there. I guess we'll find out what the source is when episode 17 airs, and see which version of Over The Star plays.

It's not like the Catalan dub is the first to use FUNi's scripts or footage...or the last.

I consider this a good thing, because they would dub it in Dutch and it would be stupid.

Also, I'm pretty sure AB Groupe still hold the rights for the Netherlands. Somehow.

While the footage of the Catalan dub may be based on the Funimation version, the script isn't. They seem to be carrying over many of the French Dub names such as "Fortunate Turtle" for Muten Roshi and "Cor Petit" for Piccolo. You'd think they would start fresh with accurate names like the French dub of DBZ Kai, but I guess not. Another annoying thing is that they say "Songohan" all the freakin' time. It's never just Gohan or Goku, its Songohan and Songoku.

Catalán dub isn't based on the FUNi footage. They're using 16:9 masters (FUNi got 4:3 masters) and they have textless title cards and OPEDs.

And yeah, they kept all the names from the previous dub like Satanás Cor-Petit, Follet Tortuga, Songohan, Songoku, Space Warriors, etc.

I don't speak Catalan, so I wouldn't know, but I just picked up the couple of words from Dragon Soul that sounded like words that were translated from FUNi's version.

The Catalan voice for Son Goku (Marc Zanni, I think he has the direction of the dub, too) said in an interview: "We wanted to keep the original Japanese names but in the Catalan Dragon Ball fan mind is so strongly established terms like "Cor Petit" (for example) that if we would change it to "Piccolo" those fans would burn the entire studio!"
He was joking, of course, but its true lots of fans were worried of possible changes in their beloved old (and wrong) names. So, they kept some mistranslations of the past just for dub-fan service.

And: "We are dubbing all screams (In the original dub, most of the screams were kept in japanese) but the dub industry standards have changed a lot in 20 years".
I know it will sound ridiculous, but there are upset fans for not keeping the japanese screams. Many Catalan fans want to hear Goku with his Catalan voice but Ms. Masako Nozawa when he screams...

Facts in the new Catalan dub:

- They keep most of the original dub voices (Freezer voice actor -Jordi Vilaseca- died last month, Dr. Gero voice actor -Jordi Dauder, a gorgeous Catalan actor- died last week... RIP). The acting is very good IMO
- They use Goku more often than Songoku. It's been always like this in the Catalan dub, but they always call Gohan > Songoan... (no "H")
- Piccolo > Cor Petit
- Saiyans > They have used both forms!!: "Saiyans" and "Guerrers de l'Espai". I guess the use of "Saiyans" is just for purist-fan service, because they used it only 3 times, 1 in "Next Episode Preview" of Episode 2 and the other 2 times in the Episode 2 itself. In Epidose 3 the used "Guerrers de l'Espai" all the time. Let's see what happens from now on... I think it's a mistake to mix both forms.
- They keep the original attack names: Piccolo said today: Makankosappo!!! Cool!! the attack names were always (mis)translated. Now this is fixed.
- In the "classic" Catalan dub "Shenron" was called "Xeron". Now this is fixed. They said "Shenron" in the first retrospective minutes of Episode 1.
- KameHameHa was KameKame in the classic dub. It was fixed in the Cell Game episodes but I wanted to hear it by myself in the Kai Saiyan arc... and yes, it's KameHameHa. Good!
- For now, the script is incredibly accurate to the original Japanese script. I'm glad because the translation was terrible in the classic dub, especially in the Namek/Freezer arc... well it was horrendous and even confussing in some cases...
- The Opening and Ending use some words that made me think they use the English Lyrics as base to translate...
- It's an UNCUT airing. Well... like the DVD/BD releases, with the original Japanese violence and penises removal... I mean that there is no extra editing like in the USA airing.
- They altered the sequence of episode like this: Opening -> Prologue -> Title -> Episode -> NEP -> Ending
- They deleted the Eyecatchers (no ads, so they are pointless in a regular broadcast)

Sorry for my bad English. Hope you find it interesting!

Hmm, judging by the episode titles on the Australian and New Zealand CN broadcast, they might be airing the Nicktoons version since the title for episode 3 starts off with 'A Life or Death Battle...' whereas the Toonzai version was just 'Goku and Piccolo's Desperate Attack'. But it'd be even more surprising if they aired the uncut dub like they did for One Piece.

Well, that was more a case of the edited One Piece masters not being finished.

Yeah true, though I don't ever remember them airing those episodes on Cartoon Network in the US.

Oh, thanks for the update. I probably should've been checking CN's website. Luckily though, I have been checking Madman Entertainment's website (the Australian distributor of DB), and Kai Parts 4 and 5 are slated to be released on the 19th of October, presumably with Kikuchi's score. So if any of you want to grab Part 4 with the replacement music, now's your chance.

Dragon Ball GT is finally airing in Czech republic. It's the first time ever the series was airing here.
Don't know if dubbed, but probably yes, as everything that is airing nowadays is dubbed.
Also GT is airing in Romania on Animax.

Heh, that's because CNUS dropped the show, so Toei didn't bother paying FUNi to finish editing them.

And VegettoEX deserves a wrench thrown at him as I have tried many times (in fact, many months ago) to tell him that a Cantonese redub of "Dragonball" is going to air on Hong Kong's TVB. Or more specifically on their secondary channel, J2 and they will air the new redub as soon as "Fairy Tail" goes on hiatus next week. TVB has been hinting the new Dragonball redub will be followed by Dragonball Kai.

Fairy Tail does kinda need a hiatus as TVB has airing Cantonese dubbed episodes non-stop from Monday to Friday. And since Dragonball is taking that time slot, it will indeed be airing from Mondays to Fridays. So expect Dragonball to be on for a good 5 months straight before Kai premieres.
The world is your's.

I had to edit my topic with all the correct and precise sources into a post that was almost good enough to be transformed into a news post before he posted the news about the french Kai situation :P Seriously speaking, I think this is not Mike priority, plus the fact that he's busy enough with other things in life than putting up updates about things he doesn't really care about.
