If I could go back fifteen years ago...

Post by Vice » Tue Mar 26, 2013 6:47 pm

I would have completely avoided spoilers. I never got to enjoy DBZ without already knowing everything that happened in the story. I was introduced to the series when I saw a drawing someone had during my freshman year in high school and I asked him about it. From there I immediately hopped on the internet and researched everything I could about the series, including plot synopsis for every arc. I never got to be surprised by what unfolded in the series and it eats at me a little to this day.

If you went back you would already know about them first hand and if you erased your memory you wouldn't help but repeat spoiling yourself out of curiosity... happens bro

I remember when I collected the toys, I would see certain characters that wasn't in the show at the time and I felt kinda cheated :P
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

Which is the exact reason that I have gone out of my way to know as little about "Battle of the Gods" as possible. Inevitably some tidbits have snuck past my refusal to learn new things, but I'm trying to minimize them so I can be as absorbed in the movie as I possibly can without the influence of spoilers or outside information.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

That's one reason I'm thankful for the wealth of DB misinformation on the internet. There was so much bad information, and I believed so much of it, that it was virtually impossible for me to be spoiled on the series, even if I thought otherwise.

Which brings me to this:

Damn you, Ye Kanzenshuu Overlords, for being so god damned reliable! I'm looking at the BoG spoilers and I just know, damn it, I just know it's all going to be right because you bastards are going to fact-check, and double-check, and triple-and-quadruple check with a fine-toothed comb, and do careful research with accuracy and precision, and actually care about the facts! Facts of all things! Oooh, you kazen-shoes and your miserable professionalism and -gag- integrity! It grates on me! How can I hope to spoiler-free without having to be responsible for my own self-discipline?! Oooh, I tell you, you lousy curs, you keep at it with this blasted good work, nay, blasted great work, and ooh so help me God, I'm packing my suitcase moving to Dragon Ball Wiki! Aha! Take that! Kamehamehaa! Galick gun! Pow pow pow! Pika pikaaaa!

Ain't like the good old days no more!

Ahem. Back to the subject at hand:

I do wish, however, that I watched Dragon Ball before Z.

If I could go back fifteen years ago, I wouldn't be here right now arguing about cartoon voice actors. I'd be...

Eh, nevermind, I'd probably still be here.

I remember those old toys SSJ3 Goku, Broli, Bardock and Tapion. And this is me that barely knows about SSJ 1 Goku at the time and i'm like "wow there is a higher power up for Goku?!" So yeah, my spoilers was action figures back around 97". But if anything it made me more excited about DBZ.

I would be 5 years old, would not have Diabetes and still be a year shy of discovering DBZ. Although I was just starting Pokémon around the time, it was either Blue or Red version. Don't remember much about 15 years ago.

Tis why I'm avoiding Battle of Gods spoilers; in fact the only ones I've gotten are from the fact that Japan doesn't think they're a thing, though that's long-established, and posts in the forum outside of the movie thread. Which in practical reality is my own darn fault, but the mentality that two week old spoilers can be thrown around like 20+ year old spoilers is horse-dooky. ( ) Also making me glad I avoided fandom during the Toonami years- I heard of events I knew nothing about in places, but nothing that ruined entire arcs for me- which is rubbing salt in the wound and for that I apologize.

I often wish I had the ability to selectively delete my memories, so I could forget everything about Dragon Ball, as one of many examples, and leave myself with the message of "You like Dragon Ball, it's really good, watch Dragon Ball, then Dragon Ball Z, then Dragon Ball GT (Which is non-canon) on those DVDs you have right there, and watch it in Japanese".

I never got to see Dragon Ball before Z either, and I wish I could. But really I just want the "first time experience" again, preferably not at such a young age as before. I think I tend to experience things for the first time again by introducing other people to them and hearing their opinions.

I have it other way around. Internet wasn't that spoiler heavy and common as it is nowadays. I was watching the show on TV (now you can watch it online or some people even download all episodes of it illegally, a total sci-fi back then) and on the internet, there were few fan sites, with info, but most of them had things, that weren't true or 100% correct (lot of AF like stuff also), so you had to watch the show anyway to find out. And still, if it was true, I was damn excited from things to come.
I was used to series like Batman, Thundercats or Spider-man, in episodic format, so 500 episode franchise (didn't knew that back then) was like mega-huge world for me. Also, I thought that the Bardock photo, how he is stepping out of his spaceship is from upcoming series, where Goku's dad will come to earth, being evil, thanks to info from some fan site and it was years actually, until I finally saw the TV special (like 6 years back).
When I was a kid, we didn't knew the series ended in Japan year or two before with GT and THE END. We thought that as the episodes were airing, so next 20 episodes are like done, but they are making more.
This feeling was also from how the fights are. It was fight with main villain like for 30 episodes, and we thought, that they started a fight and didn't had the outcome yet, so they were making the story as it goes.
Because it was always in style, like the hero is winning and then, it's upside down, cliffhanger, end - Next episode the fight goes on again, with hero in perill and there he has different strategy...... and so on.
This thought was cemented with GT after Z, as we never heard about GT before, everything was Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z and last episode of GT caught us with surprise.....

It's so much memories, it would be awesome, if every older fan here will write down his memories of how he watched the series and that spirit of that time. 90's was awesome decade, it was like more high-tech 80's and so much progress still going on. There's nothing new nowadays, basics are allready established and so only performance of electronics is enhanced. I remember how the graphics of PS1, PS2 and later PS3 blown me off respectively, as my first game was Prince of Persia on 486 PC.... and now the PS4 really didn't caught me that much.
FighterZ, Street Fighter 6, Mortal Kombat: Funky_Strudel
PS5: Dynamixx88
Trust me, I'm millenial and a designer.

Heh, I was kinda happy even though I did get spoiled. I watched dragonball for the first time when i was a kid. It was on french tv for kids, then i didn't watch it for years, but caught it 5-6 years later on tv during my summer holidays in france. After that i asked my grandma to record stuff. She recorded very random stuff. An android episode here and there, cell eps... And in the end, some Buu episodes. Damn did I love watch this unknown character called "Gotrunks" in the french dub (Gotenks). After this, we got a french satelitte at home in Norway, and I watched more or less all episodes from where the point Cell turns perfect, until the end. In this period, the Boo saga became my favorite. I also started to get random fansubs from here and there, french records from DB recorded in beligum, and also the ocean dub of earlier Z episodes... I also got some DBGT fansubs!

Did I enjoy the show less? Maybe, but I was war shipping it so much that it didn't really matter.

...I'd be seven, and three years shy of discovering the series in 2000. Unfortunately, I didn't have cable at the time... so I relied on friends' knowledge (which, by and large, was scattered and downright inaccurate at best). In fact, I didn't really see the series until the Buu era rolled around when my parents got cable, which meant that I was getting hella spoilers from day one.
I was Thanos before the MCU existed!

I was lucky enough to have very little of the show spoiled for me as I watched it back when it first aired in the UK. The merchandise was handled very poorly though and I remember having Janemba and Super Buu toys when we were still at the Cell saga. I actually thought Janemba was another form of Cell's

What's really funny is that to this day DBZ Movie 12 has never aired in the UK or been released on DVD.
