The difference is resolution, blu-ray is capable of 1920x1080 where as DVDs are stuck at 720x480 or just standard definition. So HD media on DVDs is only degrading as they have to heavily compress it, lower the resolution just to fit on a DVD and the audio is usually the messed up part... lossless audio does not exist on dvds, does on blu-ray.Gyt Kaliba wrote:See, that's just it. I see people say that all the time, but as long as the DVD is well made and had a good source material...I really don't see that much difference. I honestly don't. Maybe it's because my eyes aren't the best in the world (I do wear glasses), but I just don't see it.
That's not to say I'm not ever going to switch to Bluray though. I do appreciate the fact that they're apparently a lot harder to scratch. So once I have the spare cash and nothing else I'm wanting to spend it on at the time (or when DVD's really are no more), then I will get a Bluray player. Chances are though, I'll only buy things I don't already have, or Blurays that come with more extras, though - I'll still see no need to pick up Bluray copies of stuff I already have on DVD.
Doesn't matter if the source is good and pristine, DVDs will always look worse to better formats and with 4K already here we're going to see a new optical media soon as streaming just doesn't cut it.
