What happened in DB during your first year on Kanzenshuu?
Or DaizenshuuEX. Or Kanzentai.
So, today is my one year anniversary on Kanzenshuu. And, of course, the big thing that happened this year, the event to end all events, was Battle of Gods. But there is already a year in review thread for this year, somewhere. I was wondering what happened in other people's first year on the site(s).

Budokai Tenkaichi 2 came out.
Which, back then at least, felt like a lot, given that my early years of Dragonball fandom consisted entirely of dub releases.

Battle of Gods, and I believe I joined on it's release date too I didn't even know about BoG until I came across this website (which was a sheer fluke in itself) and the announcement of the new Season BD's. Was a pretty big 8 or so months. Joining Kanzeshuu helped me reinvigorate my dying DBZ passion.

Re: What happened in DB during your first year on Kanzenshuu
Hmm. Let's see. The year was 2000, so I suppose the biggest thing that happened in the fandom was that DBZ season 3 concluded with Garlic Jr. that spring and then season 4 aired on Toonami that fall. What was more important to me, though, was that that was the year I first started collecting fansubs and started hating the dub!
Also, that summer, FUNimation released their first bilingual DVD of the series, finally allowing U.S. fans to legally own parts of the series in Japanese. I got a DVD player for Christmas that year for that express purpose.
FUNimation had that tie-in with Burger King that summer wherein Dragon Ball toys were included in their Kids Meal. I never got any, though.
If you're talking about actually joining the forums, though, that was 2009, the year the first Dragon Box was released, which was finally enough incentive for me to do more than just follow the site every single day and send in questions to the podcast.

Do you follow the most comprehensive and entertaining Dragon Ball analysis series on YouTube? If you do, you're smart and awesome and fairly attractive. If not, see what all the fuss is about without even having to leave Kanzenshuu:

Re: What happened in DB during your first year on Kanzenshuu
Hmm...I honestly don't remember when I first discovered Daizenshuu EX and was just a lurker without an account, but based on my forum join date, I can probably guess that the Season Sets coming out were probably a big part of why I joined. Considering I was happily enough buying them at the time too, that's probably also a pretty big part of why I didn't really stick around at the time either.
At some point years later though, I'd start to follow the podcasts for their supplemental material in addition to the main site, which I'd never stopped using, though. And Battle of Gods singlehandidly forced me back to the forums. And now apparently 'I Live Here'.

Re: What happened in DB during your first year on Kanzenshuu
If anybody needs a refresher course (like I did), you can get to the Kanzenshuu news archives, organized by month/year, by clicking here.
I remember the first year I started following Kanzenshuu from a distance was in 2006. I was googling when the next Season Set would come out, and I found that....apparently..........there exist fans who feel there were, well....[understatement]some shortcomings with that home video release.[/understatement]
But I actually started participating in the forum in 2010. In that year...
-Daisuke Gori tragically committed suicide.
-While FUNimation acquired and started dubbing Kai in late 2009, they didn't formally announce it until February of 2010.
-Kind of a logical extension, but the English dub of Kai debuted. On home video and on two different TV networks!
-FUNimation completed their "Blue Brick Season Set" release line of Dragon Ball.
-FUNimation re-released the first Dragon Ball movie, uncut for the first time.
-Parent company Navarre said they were looking into selling FUNimation.
-"Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans" was released.
-We heard the first rumblings of the (STILL. UN. RELEASED.) Ocean dub of Kai......wow...really? Almost four years now? Oh, boy.....
-Dubs of Kai for Latin America and Brazil were announced.....along with several production woes (re-cast voices, the use of FUNimation's Nicktoons-edited English dub as the basis of their footage and scripts).
Quite a year!

A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Re: What happened in DB during your first year on Kanzenshuu
I first discover the site around early 2004 when the forums were first made. I didn't join the forums until five years later after years of lurking and I remember joining the forums when the first RB game was coming out.

Re: What happened in DB during your first year on Kanzenshuu
Discovered this site by lurking the "DBZ Season BDs" forum, and I joined up on the one year anniversary of DBZ Kai's Boo Saga announcement. And now it's only a matter of time before we get a release date . There were also pre-orders ready for the new BDs by the time I joined.
DBZ ended after the Frieza Saga.Goku wrote:You haven't figured it out yet? I'm the Saiyan who came all the way from Earth for the sole purpose of beating you. I am the warrior you've heard of in legends, pure of heart and awakened by fury. That's what I am. I AM THE SUPER SAIYAN, SON GOKU!
Re: What happened in DB during your first year on Kanzenshuu
Dragonball Evolution was coming out and the Orange Bricks were finishing their run. I think we were just getting small leaks about Kai, but that might have been later.
Thanks goodness for BoG; for the longest time, my most active topic was DBE and I couldn't believe I had made that many posts in that thread.
I really don't feel like I have been here a long time. Kai and the American DRAGONBOX and all the specials and Battle of Gods have just whizzed by.

Re: What happened in DB during your first year on Kanzenshuu
I joined... founded... whatever... the site in January 1998.
The series was still airing in syndication on North American television in its original dubbing format from FUNimation (edited, Ocean Studios cast, Shuki Levy music, Barry Watson Grand Overlord, etc.). We were in "Season Two".
Final Bout had only just come out and Dragon Ball GT had only just recently wrapped up in Japan a few months earlier in 1997.
I have no idea what else was going on. I'm sure it was awesome.

Re: What happened in DB during your first year on Kanzenshuu
Let's see. Back in 2006, everyone on DaizenshuuEX was talking about...
- The brand-new and still fledgling DaizEX podcast.
- The release of "Dragon Box: The Movies" in Japan, along with continuing single-disc DBZ series releases, and eventually the announcement of single disc releases for DB.
- Atari screwing up and having to re-print the Greatest Hits version of Budokai 3.
- New characters being added to the arcade version of Super Dragon Ball Z, plus the eventual PS2 release.
- The additional eventual releases of "Advanced Adventure" (GBA), "Shin Budokai" (PSP), "Battle Stadium D.O.N." (PS2, GC), and "Sparking NEO / Budokai Tenkaichi 2" (PS2, Wii)... while "GT Transformation 2" (GBA) disappears.
- "Harakanaru Goku Densetsu" for the DS is announced for the next year, as is "Shin Budokai: Another Road" for the PSP.
- FUNimation releases DBZ Movies 12 and 13, and even showing the former in theaters. A triple-feature box set of all three Broly movies is also released, along with another one for DBZ Movies 1-3.
- How depressing it was that Kidsmark/Lionsgate had the rights to the first 13 episodes and first movie of Dragon Ball indefinitely.
- For one singular day, the DaizEX home page is inexplicably covered in some sort of crazy moon-runes.
- The first early announcements of the first dreaded "remastered" DBZ season sets from FUNimation, and not long thereafter, the word "WIDESCREEN" in relation to it rears its ugly head. To think that we at first suspected they would use the Dragon Box footage...
- Voice actors Hirotaka Suzuoki (Tenshinhan) and Kazuyuki Sogabe (Dr. Myu, Toma, No.13) both pass away.
- Kickass crossover masterpiece game "Jump Ultimate Stars" (DS) is announced and released.
- Toriyama contributes to a nifty crossover project with Kochikame, wherein Freeza and his men are in awe at the fearsome gag-character power of Ryo.
- Speaking of crossovers, Toriyama and Eiichiro Oda give us an awesome Christmas present in the form of Cross Epoch.
Yeah, I pretty much just plucked out everything worth mentioning from 2006 in the News Archive...

The atrocity that was Game Project Age 2011, or Ultimate Tenkaichi, was unfortunately released on that year...

Re: What happened in DB during your first year on Kanzenshuu
Although I didn't join until the tail end in 2012 the Orange Bricks started getting released in the UK and DBZ Kai started airing on UK TV. And the Budokai Collection came out and I believe Battle of Gods was first announced then as well.
Re: What happened in DB during your first year on Kanzenshuu
It was 2008 and the Jump Special, "Yo! Son Goku and his Friends Return!" was announced during the spring, which I thought was really exciting. That was probably one of the many reasons I joined the forum, I wanted to talk about it to other fans. Other than that, hell if I can remember.
Re: What happened in DB during your first year on Kanzenshuu
I'm a fish. I've not been here long at all but I came in during an exciting time at least!
Battle of Gods had just finished its run in Japanese theatres and the hype was huge. With the home release approaching, it was a really exciting time to be part of the community.
Was a bit of a shame to see many people come and go with the hype but hey ho, I guess with a series this old, it's to be expected.
I'm happy I stuck around though. It's been great to sit and discuss things like the Rock the Dragon set and the recently released Blu-Rays.

04... The kanzenban were still coming out and I slowly collected them both through trips to NY and online. I don't think Viz had finished their original releases yet...GT was airing on Toonami (was it Saturday only by then,Toonami?). I was still buying the yearly DB games at that point... I'm sure there's more, but that's all I got off the top of my head.

I...think so, but don't quote me on that as I'm not 100% sure. If it wasn't, it was just around the corner before that development.Chuquita wrote:GT was airing on Toonami (was it Saturday only by then,Toonami?).

I cannot remember when I started lurking the site(s) but I do remember that GT was playing on toonami... I think that might be the only notable thing, I originally tried to join the forums sometime around when the Budokai HD collection censorship was reported on and I never actually got to comment on it as I only just now got registered. (and at this point, I do not care enough anymore to comment)
I'm not sure what to call my first year but I guess I'm going with my registration and not my first visit, so I suppose the notable things are... Battle of Z announced for the west?
