One Piece never became big in the US, I guess everyone just change the channel or goes to bed when One Piece comes on TV.

Damn, this was bad week for, well, everyone on the block. Once Nappa and Vegeta arrive on Earth though, I'm expecting a spike in the ratings. Not a huge one very noticeable. Also, One Piece. What more can be said? I don't think it will ever find a stable audience on US TV. One Piece lost to everything after 3AM except Bebop. One Piece seems to be a rating vacuum at this point.

The last 5 episodes of One Piece that have aired on Toonami have been recap episodes that essentially tried to summarize entire story arcs in approximately 10 minutes each because the series changed time-slots in Japan and they tried to very quickly catch new viewers up on who was who. You can probably guess how well done they are (answer: not very). The episode for that week, in particular, mostly covered stuff that just aired a couple of weeks before the recaps began. It shouldn't be a surprise that people tuned out when they saw it still the same shit as the last few weeks.

The ratings will start to improve again when people realize that the plot has actually resumed (which it did this week).

Kill La Kill is coming next month, having a fresh new IP may help bring new viewers.

I think Kill La Kill will be a huge hit considering all the hype it got when it originally aired, and in the eyes of many people, living up to it.

Ratings were actually on time this week, Kai did really well:

...And of course now they're planning to drop One Piece down to 2:30 now that its ratings are actually recovering from the crappy recap filler that they felt it absolutely necessary to air because "there's no such thing as filler". Argh. At least the DVDs seem to sell well enough on their own to justify Funimation continuing to produce the dub, with the Toonami money just being a nice, extra incentive.

While this doesn't' affect DBZ Kai, this is still a horrible scenario Toonami is in.

If things don't get much better, I give Toonami before the end of 2016 before it gets axed...again.

Pretty much everything after 3AM was repeats anyway, so I don't think it is too much of a loss.

But still, losing half of the block is a big loss. And Adult Swim doing it seemingly out of nowhere pretty much means that CN don't any conservations of pulling the plug on Toonami again if the ratings don't get better. Despite how pissied off they know many people would be if Toonami were to get axed again.

There are 4 reasons to why this is happening :

1- TV isn't as big as it used to be so if someone is interested in an anime they'll either stream it online or buy it on DVD.

2- Toonami are targeting people who already own or have seen what they have so a good amount of who they're targeting aren't going to stay at home or stay up late to see what they already know.

3- Anime in the US is very small compared to Japan so they're not going to get any new adult viewers cause the general thing for a lot of adults and even teens is animation is for kids so who's left are the fans that already own and have seen what they have to offer.

4- Anime has a bad reputation in the US so big networks aren't going to try to market it to kids thanks to the likes of CNN who say anime is child porn so parents who can't think for themselves and unfortunately they're a good amount won't let their kids watch anime so there aren't many ways to introduce anime to new fans which leaves us with who's left from the DBZ/Pokemon days who like I said have seen everything that a network will have to offer.

The problem in the US is parents want everything that's aimed at kids to be made with the mind set that their kid is a brain dead retard and that not only hurts the anime industry but animation as a whole.
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.

I also think a lot of people are busy these days. The people who watch Toonami are 13 - 25. During this time of the year, a lot of people can't stay up late since they have work or school. Summer time is always the best for these type of blocks.

That's great! Looks like Kai is picking up since Vegeta and Nappa have arrived and actually can combat other popular shows.

Great ratings for Kai. Looks like Vegeta really is a huge draw on Toonami.

DB Kai holding steady. Didn't expect Kill La Kil to lose viewers, I honestly thought it would gain more.

Only anime fans have heard of Kill La Kill.
"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.

I know but AOT was kind of anime/manga-fans only kind of deal as well and it did huge ratings. Also, what the hell is going on with Naruto Shippuden? It loses hundreds of thousands of viewers every week. Are they in a filler arc or something?

They finish the Sasuke & Sai arc this week, and move onto an anime-original arc right after that.

It may even do worse in upcoming weeks, when the novelty wares off.
