Are any Dragon Ball movies good movies?
This question came into my mind thanks to my interest in film and TeamFourStars DBcember. If we start comparing Dragon Ball movies to other anime films (Jin-Roh, Perfect Blue, Spirited Away, End of Evangelion) can we seriously call them great or even good movies?
Re: Are any Dragon Ball movies good movies?
In terms of pop-corn entertaiment, yes. Good examples would be Fusion Reborn, Wrath of Dragon etc
If good = deep or cerebral for you, then hell no!
There are tons of series & shows out there that'll blow DragonBall outta water.
But I've had my share of watching so-called deep & thought-provoking fims like the one you mentioned & dozed off.
So....its kinda tricky
DragonBall has this "repeat value" I guess

Re: Are any Dragon Ball movies good movies?
The two specials and Battle of Gods are all-around good films even compared to other anime movies in my opinion. Battle of Gods, for instance, has everything a good film needs to succeed.
Re: Are any Dragon Ball movies good movies?
Most DBZ films are only 45-50 minutes. They're not intended to be "real" movies that you can see without already knowing the characters and its universe.
Re: Are any Dragon Ball movies good movies?
Battle of Gods is a great movie. Outside the animation, funny jokes and cool fight scenes that some of the other movies posses, BoG has actual character development and it explores themes beyond "must punch bad guy really hard". Of course, it does so in a fun popcorn flick kind of way, but that doesn't mean it's not good. Is it the best anime movie ever? No, just like DB is not the best anime/manga ever, but, for what it is, it's brilliant.

These movies are fan service, so I like them for what they are. I'm not going to put them in my top 100 favorite movies of all time or anything. I like them for being fun. Jin-Roh, Perfect Blue, Spirited Away, Akira, Summer Wars and Ninja Scroll are mainly market to a bigger audience, so they will get more attention critically speaking.

Well nothing from Dragonball can compare to Miyazaki. Battle of Gods would have to check its privilege if it even tried.

I actually have to agree with you just because these are the only DB films that feel like moviesDoctor. wrote:The two specials and Battle of Gods are all-around good films even compared to other anime movies in my opinion. Battle of Gods, for instance, has everything a good film needs to succeed.

None of the movies really stand on their own without watching the show and reading the manga. If you watch Fusion Reborn without watching the show, you would be confused on what's going on. Path of Power works well on a stand alone movie and could be a good way to get people into the series.

Re: Are any Dragon Ball movies good movies?
even though I do like and enjoy most movies, the only movies I consider GOOD are -
Battle of Gods - all of my reasons were already stated above. Great story, chracter development and introducing new stuff we haven't had before to the DB universe.
Resurrection F - it might be the same formula as the 1-13 DBZ movies, but unlike them, it is full length film, features SSGSS (you gotta love it) and (while it's fanservice) lets the secondary Z fighters time to shine. Oh, and Jaco.
Wrath of the Dragon - except for the awful ending, this is a great movie, intresting with very good fight scenes and amazing animation. Featuring some character development to characters that never got any in the series (Kid Trunks) and the overall Tapion story also added a lot to the greatness of the movie.
Bardock - Father of Goku & History of Trunks - if you consider those two as movies, then they are amazing ones. And I don't even have to say why.

Of the original films, Movie 13 is the only one that attempts to have an actual plot and drama.

There are metrics for quality other than just entertainment or if something is cerebral. Does the movie or story move you emotionally is a better indication of value than if it makes you think. In that case, I don't think any of the DB movies are better than anything other than fun. The series however is full of moments that emotionally satisfying. In terms of pop-corn entertaiment, yes. I never viewed the old DBZ movies as actual movies, just long episodes.
But the one that comes to mind for me is the first Broly movie.
My ultimate favorite one though was Dragonball Mystical Adventure because it amazingly covered a couple Arcs perfectly into one 45 minute movie.

It does it well, though I think some of the moments could've been allowed to breathe a little more. Ironically, The Path To Power is twice the length of movie 3 and it feels like it fits in too much. Movie 1 and 3 do a damn good job of condensing those arcs.omaro34 wrote:I never viewed the old DBZ movies as actual movies, just long episodes.

Battle Of Gods is a damn good movie in its own regard and quite frankly it was the first Dragon Ball animated movie, that, well, actually felt like a movie.

As far as shonen movies go, yeah they are the best to me. I have to say One Piece Film Z is a freaking colossus though. I found it perfect.
I also like Gintama-Be Forever Yorozuya. All the other shonen movies I watched (HunterxHunter,Naruto,FMA,Yu Yu Hakusho,Fairy Tail,Saint Seiya,etc...) were boring.

If your question is Dragon Ball movies, then I'd have to see "Road to strongest" (movie 4) is the best in my opinion. But I know many people don't share my opinion.
Re: Are any Dragon Ball movies good movies?
I love DBZ Movie 1 (Dead Zone or Return My Gohan! or whatever). Some gorgeous art design, great fight choreography and it gets straight to the point.
