Hello, ladies, gentlemen, and everyone between and beyond, and welcome to week 111 of the first Dragon Ball rewatch of the decade.
We're doing five episodes a week, and we'll be watching every single episode of Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT. All 508 episodes. Plus the TV specials and the movies.
I encourage you all to watch in Japanese with subtitles, especially if you have never done so before, but watch along in whichever way brings you the most joy.

Super 17 goes as quickly as it came to make way for a far more ambitious finale arc.

I really like these episodes.

The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

About the trivia, Gohan used a Kamehameha to try to destroy Buu’s ball when it was releasing smoke. That was the last time, not against Cell

So, these episodes are largely nonsense, but entertaining. Super 17 really was the "filler arc" of GT.

Episode 46 I remember from watching music videos back in the day, not having a clue what was going on or who any of the characters were. But it always looked cool! The battle is a lot of fun. I particularly like the usage of the forest environment.

I'm still not sure what was going on with 18's black bra. Is that where the bomb is supposed to be placed? It's a bit of a clunky moment.

I think that the best part of these episodes may have been Bulma, Bra, Videl, and Chichi. They all play off each other really well.

That "Final Fantasy" track or whatever that plays over the emergence of the evil Shenlong and again in the following episode is great. It really does evoke a disturbing sense of finality and dread at what's to come. That whole summoning scene itself was done well with just the right amount of ominous. It's also kind of sad, all things considered.

"Blue Velvet" is probably my favorite of the GT endings, although it's too catchy for me to watch. I don't like getting songs stuck in my head.

...and the unnamed officer who led the Red Ribbon Army in a raid of Roshi's island in DB episode 49 (Funimation invented the name Dock for him; it's sometimes claimed he was given this name in the Japanese credits too, but I have found no reliable source for this).
He was unnamed in the manga, but given the name "Dock" in the original Japanese anime. He's credited in episode 48. I believe that FUNimation called him "Dark" in the English dub.

Goku mentions being able to sense 17 so he can't hide from Goku, even though he shouldn't be able to. It's possible he's bluffing.
Super 17 is a Machine Mutant according to Doctor Mu, so that makes it possible for him to have Ki, unlike Gero's creations.

Ocean uses a slightly different chant here than they did when Goku and Pan fought Lood; Goku says "Shrimp bowl, porkchop, chicken fried rice!" whereas previously he'd said "Brine shrimp, porkchop, chicken fried rice!"

- Granted, it's possible Goku simply misremembered it.
In the original Japanese, the chant also changed between episodes, but just a different order of the same terms (Katsudon, Tendon, Oyakodon --->>Tendon, Katsudon, Oyakodon).

Eh?

I also could have sworn General Blue addresses him as Dock in the Japanese version at some point. But at the very least he was identified by name in the end credits

This is where GT bores me. The invasion from hell lasts like two episodes, we barely see it as more than a nuisance that is dealt with barely any effort. Only Gohan struggles, because he is a slacker, and Uub fixes it in no time. It's like a chore, they have to go there and do it, but really, they don't even need SS. I know the core of the arc is Super 17, so 10 episodes on fodder past enemies isn't needed, but at least Rildo could've put up a good fight. It's like dealing with Appules and Cranberries.

The arc does look beautiful, this fast-paced story at least saved us from Uch*y*m*. Oh no, wait, he has one episode, well it's still better than more than one episode.
Kid Goku fighting Super 17 all around the world is fantastic, it was 6pm and Goku sent him to 11pm. That is something that DB hadn't done in a while, ever since the saiyan arc I think with the sky changing colours as the fight dragged on, to have the passage of time on screen. Although, in this case, they went "through" time.

But the fight itself sucks for me because it becomes dumb. Goku has experienced ki-absorbing androids in the past, from the very same manufacturer, as well. And still cannot pick up a fucking clue. And when he finally cracks the code... he keeps doing it!!!
That's something I can see Gohan doing, but not the most experienced and smart guy on the field. I also hate how GT was getting more focused on beam fights than fist fights, the final round against Baby was also a beam-fest. Luckily, it isn't like that in the final arc.

But it was nice how they portrayed how strong Super 17 had gotten, when he can hear the slight movements in the air when Goku is shunkanidoing and react to it really surprised me. Seeing a character that can be so above SS4 was really good, and they did a good job. My grievance is how he got there, making Goku look like an amateur with amnesia.

I'm not that convinced with how they defeated the android, but I go along with it because I really need this arc to end.

Search for DBS: 7/10
Baby arc: 8.5/10
Super 17: 4/10

That's episode 48, not 49. That particular Red Ribbon officer doesn't have any dialogue until 49, which credits no one called Dock, but does credit someone called Seal Soldier.

I suspect the Dock name was a different officer who's in episode 48 but not 49, and Funimation mixed them up in their scripts somehow.

No. I just checked the episode myself. Blue does indeed address the officer as Dock in the Japanese version when he’s telling him to lead the B team to Kame house and to lose weight because he doesn’t like the chubby type.

Dock just says “yes sir” over and over. Why Toei credited the character in an episode he was barely vocal instead of an episode he was more prominent in idk.

I see.

My bad, then! Thanks for the correction.

(Today's thread is in-progress, watching the episodes now so I can write up trivia. Thread should be up in a few hours at most :) )
